🐺 CHAPTER NINE - The Moonblood Hunt
The forest erupted into chaos.
Darkfang wolves burst through the trees, shadows ripping free from the underbrush. Their eyes glowed red with Moonblood fury, their growls vibrating through the ground. Lyra stumbled back as three launched themselves toward her, claws slashing through the air.
Kael moved faster.
His massive silver wolf form collided with the first Darkfang mid-air, sending it crashing into a tree. Another snapped at him, teeth grazing his flank, but he spun with lethal precision-jaws clamping onto its throat.
"Lyra-MOVE!" Kael's voice echoed through the Oath, ringing in her bones.
She ducked as a Darkfang leapt over Kael's back, heading straight for her. Instinct told her to run-
But the mark burned and something inside her snapped.
"No," she whispered.
And the mark answered.
Silver fire surged from her arm, blazing across her skin. The energy formed a barrier in front of her, crackling like lightning. The Darkfang collided with it and flew backward, smoke rising from its fur.
Lyra stared at her glowing hand.
"Did I-did I just do that?"
Kael pivoted, his wolf eyes fierce. "Good. Again."
But Lyra barely had time to breathe. More Darkfangs rushed from every direction-drawn to her, driven by prophecy and Moonblood madness.
One of them-a massive, scarred wolf with pitch-black fur-lifted its head and howled, voice scraping like something dead.
"The Seer is here," it growled.
"Take her mark."
Lyra stepped back, heart slamming against her ribs.
Kael snarled so loudly the trees shook.
"Over my dead body."
He lunged at the scarred wolf, claws ripping into its side. The Darkfang Alpha countered, teeth locking around Kael's shoulder. Kael roared in pain, twisting violently, forcing the creature to release him.
Lyra froze.
Her vision flashed.
A glimpse of Kael... bleeding.
Falling.
Her hands glowing as the ground cracked beneath them.
"No."
She clenched her fists. "Not again. Not tonight."
A Darkfang pounced toward her from behind.
Lyra whipped around-too late-
But the Oath reacted before she could.
Kael felt her fear.
The silver wolf flashed across the clearing in a blur, knocking the Darkfang away from her with a brutal shoulder slam. His eyes glowed, wolf and man overlapping for a heartbeat.
"I told you," he said, voice trembling with fury and fear,
"no one touches you."
The scarred Darkfang laughed, low and cruel, blood dripping from its fangs.
"Protect her all you want, Alpha. When the Moonblood rises, the Seer always breaks."
Lyra felt the energy inside her spike.
"Leave him alone!" she cried.
The mark exploded.
A pulse of silver light erupted from her body, blasting outward in a wide shockwave. The forest shook. Leaves and dirt whipped into the air. Darkfangs were thrown off their feet, yelping as silver burned into their shadows.
Even Kael staggered, stunned.
Lyra sagged forward, trembling.
"What... was that?"
Kael shifted back into human form, chest heaving, blood dripping from his shoulder. He cupped her face, eyes wide with something she had never seen before-
Fear.
"Lyra... that wasn't a shield."
He swallowed hard.
"That was raw Seer power. You could level a pack with that."
Her heart dropped.
The prophecy's words echoed in her mind:
The Alpha she is bound to will either save the pack... or destroy it.
The scarred Darkfang rose again, limping but grinning.
"See?" it rasped. "She is the end."
Kael's eyes blazed with rage.
He stepped in front of Lyra, voice low and lethal.
"No. She is mine."
He lunged-
But the Darkfangs were already retreating, melting back into the forest. Their leader's final words drifted on the wind:
"We will return on the next Bloodmoon. And she will choose destruction."
Silence fell.
Lyra's legs gave out and she collapsed. Kael caught her instantly, pulling her against his chest.
"It was a vision," she whispered, shaking.
"Kael-I saw you dying again."
His grip tightened around her.
"Then we fight fate," he murmured into her hair.
"Together. No matter what the moon shows."
But Lyra wasn't sure fate could be changed anymore.
Not after what she'd just unleashed.
And far away, deep in the forest, the Darkfang Alpha smiled-
Because the Moonblood had only begun

When Alma's father stood in front of the bulldozers to protest, the energy company's thugs beat him half to death in the mud.
Instead of arresting the attackers, the police handcuffed her bleeding father and threw him into a cruiser.
"Stay back, kid," the officer barked, shoving Alma away.
Her father was denied bail and framed for assaulting an officer. The corrupt mayor just smiled and told her not to cause a scene. Meanwhile, the company mailed her weeping mother a severance check that barely covered a month of groceries.
Alma was forced to watch her family be completely destroyed by men with money and power.
Kneeling in the cold dirt where her father's blood had spilled, she didn't shed a single tear. The panic in her chest died, replaced by a cold, absolute hatred.
She realized that crying wouldn't do anything. In this world, justice didn't exist for the weak.
Years later, Alma stepped onto a prestigious Ivy League campus, her cheap backpack slung over her shoulder.
She was surrounded by the arrogant children of the very executives who ruined her life.
She lowered her head, hiding her dead eyes, and put on the perfect mask of a timid, helpless charity case.
Undergrad was just a training ground, and these elite kids were just her practice dummies. The hunt was officially on.

I was an arrogant, canceled reality TV star, trying to salvage my ruined reputation on a live broadcast.
But after I lost my temper and assaulted a cameraman, my furious grandfather chased me into our family's forbidden gallery, where I accidentally crashed into an ancient, sealed portrait.
The canvas shattered, and a terrifying woman with glowing golden eyes stepped out of the wall.
She was Cecil, the First Matriarch of the Marshall family. She caught a lightning bolt with her bare hands and crushed me to my knees with an invisible, suffocating pressure.
My grandfather, instead of saving me, groveled on the floor and abandoned me to her mercy.
"You are the disgrace that will end this family."
She hijacked my entire life, forcing me to act as her submissive baggage handler on my own survival reality show, broadcasting my humiliation to millions.
I didn't understand why this ancient monster was tormenting me. Why did she strip away my pride, treat me like a broken tool, and force me to endure the mockery of the very ex-girlfriend who had ruined my life?
But when those same cast members tried to corner me in the dark woods, Cecil stepped in front of me, her eyes locking onto the silver ring of the man mocking me.
"To catch the wolf, one must sometimes walk with the sheep."
That was when I realized she wasn't here to destroy me—she was here to hunt the parasites who had been secretly siphoning away my life force.

I woke up suffocating in the dark, only to find my mind trapped inside a tiny, plump, and entirely uncoordinated body.
A cold, mechanical voice echoed in my brain, announcing that I was dead in my original world and had transmigrated into a corporate revenge novel as the six-month-old illegitimate daughter of Edward McClure, the story's ruthless villain.
The system mercilessly outlined my doomed fate. Tonight, my cold-blooded father would abandon me to a state orphanage. By age two, he would officially sign my rights away, leaving me to die miserably at the hands of human traffickers. Outside my nursery, I could hear his terrifying footsteps approaching, his voice devoid of any human warmth as he debated throwing me out like garbage. I was completely helpless, trapped in a baby's body, staring up at a man who looked at me with pure, visceral disgust.
Why did I have to be reborn as the tragic cannon fodder of a tyrant destined to put a bullet in his own head? How was I supposed to win over a severe germaphobe when my unequipped infant reflexes made me literally pee and vomit all over his pristine Tom Ford suits?
"Your ultimate mission is to prevent Edward McClure's self-destruction. Step one: Survive tonight's abandonment crisis."
Hearing the system's terrifying ultimatum, I swallowed my adult panic, forced a pool of pitiful tears into my large eyes, and reached my chubby little hands toward the monster.
