Chapter 1

I just wanted to surprise him for our anniversary.

Three years ago, a car accident took my sight, and my husband Adrian had been my devoted caretaker ever since.

I secretly underwent experimental surgery, and today, I could finally see again.

But when I opened our bedroom door, I didn’t find a loving husband waiting.

I found him in our bed, tangled with my best friend, Vanessa.

She was wearing my favorite silk robe.

"What if she comes home early?" she giggled.

"She’ll hear the door," Adrian kissed her neck. "She trusts both of us."

They didn't even bother keeping their voices down, entirely used to my blindness.

I stood there, staring at the two people I loved most.

Then, I stepped back into the hallway, tapped my cane loudly against the wall, and smiled.

I wasn't going to scream. I was going to destroy them.

I pushed open the front door and stepped inside, the familiar creak of the hinges cutting through the quiet afternoon. The house smelled like the dinner I had planned to cook for Adrian, but the air felt heavier than usual. I had come home early, my heart lighter than it had been in months. The doctor had given me the report I had been waiting for. My eyes, the ones damaged in the accident, had recovered enough for me to see again. It was the surprise I had been hoping to give Adrian for weeks, the one that would finally bring our old life back to normal. My fingers trailed along the hallway wall, memorizing every inch, as I made my way toward the stairs.

The change hadn't happened all at once. For days I had been catching shapes at the edge of my vision, then colors, then faces. I had kept using the cane around Adrian because I wanted the doctor to confirm it before I said anything. That morning, he finally had. My sight wasn't perfect, but it was clear enough to read, recognize faces, and move through the house without help. I had spent the ride home imagining Adrian's reaction, the way his hands would close around mine when I told him. I hadn't planned to keep pretending after dinner. I had thought the cane would be put away for good by the end of the night.

My blind cane tapped a steady rhythm against the steps, guiding me up with the precision I had perfected over the years. The sound had been my constant companion, the way I had navigated the world before my sight returned. At the top, the tapping stopped for a moment as I paused outside the bedroom door. Then I heard it. A breath, not mine. Another, deeper, laced with something intimate. It wasn't the TV or the faint hum of the fan. It was two sets of breathing, coming from inside the room. My stomach tightened, but I told myself it was nothing. Adrian was probably resting upstairs.

I followed the sound, lifting my cane off the floor as I moved one careful step after another. The breathing grew clearer as I reached the bedroom door. My hand rested on the handle, ready to call out, but something stopped me. Instead, I turned it slowly and opened it just enough to look inside.

The scene unfolded in front of me like a slap I couldn't block. Adrian lay in the bed, his body half-draped in sheets. Beside him, Vanessa, my best friend for ten years, lounged against the pillows. She wore my robe, the soft silk one I had worn the night before, the fabric slipping slightly off one shoulder. Her hair was messy, her cheeks flushed. Neither of them noticed me standing in the shadowed doorway.

"What if Claire came home?" she asked, her voice light and teasing, like this was all some harmless joke between friends.

Adrian sat up a little, his expression shifting from surprise to something guarded. He looked straight at Vanessa, no cover-up, no hesitation, and said, "She trusts both of us."

The words hit harder than I expected. My breath caught in my throat, but I didn't scream. I didn't cry out. Three years of blindness, of being the wife who waited in the dark trusting them both, flashed through my mind in pieces. I had been the one who didn't see. The one who was supposed to trust. The joke they shared behind closed doors. My expectations, the ones I had carried like a secret light, shattered right there in the middle of the room. I didn't react with anger. I just turned on my heel, lifting the cane clear of the floor as I retreated back out into the hallway.

I made my way down the stairs, each step deliberate and measured, my free hand steady on the railing. I kept my cane lifted off the wood, moving as quietly as I could. At the bottom, I stood in the narrow hallway between the stairs and the living room, the silence pressing in from all sides. My heart pounded, but my face stayed calm. I wouldn't break down. Not here. Not like this. Instead, I brought the end of my blind cane down hard onto the first step, the sharp crack echoing up through the house. I knocked again, harder, the sound bouncing off the walls like a challenge.

Upstairs, footsteps hurried across the floor. A moment later, Vanessa appeared at the bottom of the stairs, her clothes disheveled in a way that looked accidental. Her blouse was buttoned crookedly, her hair tousled like she had just walked in from outside. She forced a bright smile, her eyes wide and innocent. "Claire? Oh, I just got here. Adrian and I were catching up on some paperwork. You know how it is."

She crossed the distance and pulled me into a hug, her arms wrapping around me with forced warmth. I hugged back, my hands patting her back gently, feeling the tension in her shoulders. Over her shoulder, I caught sight of a small bruise shaped like a lip print on the skin of her neck, half-hidden by the collar of her blouse.

I smiled, warm and genuine on the surface. "It's good to see you, Vanessa. Really. I was just about to start dinner if you want to stay."

She pulled back, still smiling, but I caught the flicker in her eyes. I held her gaze, my own steady, and inside, the decision settled like a stone in still water. I would swallow this secret. Every bit of it. I would use my blindness as the shield it had always been, the one thing they thought I couldn't use against them. I would take back everything they had stolen from me, step by step, with the cane in my hand and the truth I had just claimed. The house felt different now, the silence carrying a new weight, but I stood there, cane in hand, ready to walk out of this room and into whatever came next.
