Chapter 2

"The transaction is complete."

The driver slammed the heavy car door, leaving me alone in the sprawling courtyard of Ashford Manor.

There was no wedding. No guests. No exchange of rings. Richard had traded me like a depreciating asset to secure his precious corporate alliance.

I gripped the metal rims of my chair, preparing to navigate the uneven ground.

An older man in a tailored suit stepped out of the grand entrance.

"Welcome to the estate, Madam," he said, offering a crisp bow. "I am Gregory, the head butler."

I braced myself for the usual look. The quick dart of the eyes down to my paralyzed legs, followed by the poorly concealed grimace.

It never came.

"If you will follow me," Gregory instructed, turning toward the main house.

I pushed forward, expecting the jarring rattle of cobblestones. Instead, my wheels glided silently.

A fresh strip of smooth, dark asphalt cut directly through the ancient stone path, leading straight to a newly installed ramp at the front doors.

"We had the stones leveled and paved this morning," Gregory noted, glancing back. "To ensure you face no obstructions."

I paused. "Thank you."

"It is our duty," he replied evenly.

Gregory left me in the center of the master suite.

I scanned the room. The space was vast, stripped of unnecessary rugs or low tables. Everything was designed for seamless movement.

I sat in the quiet, waiting for my new husband.

Adrian Ashford. The blind, unacknowledged illegitimate son of the Ashford empire.

"His mother was a lunatic," Richard had yelled in his office yesterday. "She spiked the patriarch's drink with sterilization drugs just to make sure no other heirs could be born. Then she vanished."

Society called her vicious.

I respected her.

She risked everything to secure her son's future. My own mother, Margaret Carter, had spent her entire life believing Richard's lies. She signed over her shares, funded his failures, and died in a twisted heap of metal on a rainy highway, still thinking he loved her.

The heavy mahogany door swung open without a sound.

"Are you the bride they sent for the alliance?" a low, resonant voice asked.

I spun my chair around.

"Yes," I answered.

Adrian Ashford stepped into the room. He did not use a cane. He moved with a terrifying certainty, his tall frame cutting through the shadows. His dark eyes stared straight ahead, completely unseeing, yet missing nothing.

He stopped a few feet away.

"Richard Carter must think highly of me," Adrian stated, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Sending his crippled daughter to fulfill a bloodline contract."

"He thinks we are both disposable," I corrected.

Adrian tilted his head. He opened his mouth to issue what I assumed would be a dismissal.

"I know you don't want this marriage," I said, cutting him off before he could form the words.

His jaw snapped shut.

"Good," I continued, rolling my chair closer to him. "Because I don't want it either."

"Then why are you sitting in my bedroom?" he asked.

"Because sometimes a marriage is just a business transaction," I explained. "And I am here to negotiate."

Adrian crossed his arms over his chest. "You want to negotiate with a blind bastard?"

"Don't you want to be the next head of the Ashford family?" I challenged.

He stiffened. "Careful, Evelyn."

"People all over Europe curse your mother's name," I pushed, ignoring his warning. "They call her a monster. But I think she was incredibly brave."

Adrian's hands dropped to his sides. His fingers curled into fists.

"She sacrificed her freedom to give you a clear path to the throne," I said, my voice echoing in the large room. "Are you really going to surrender everything she fought for just because you don't want a wife?"

A heavy silence dropped over the room.

Adrian stood completely motionless.

Then, a sharp, cynical laugh broke from his chest.

"Do you know I am a blind man?" he asked, waving a hand in front of his own face.

"And I am a cripple," I shot back instantly. "Is being blind supposed to be impressive?"

Adrian froze.

His mocking smile vanished. His lips parted, but no sound came out. For the first time, the untouchable Ashford heir had absolutely nothing to say.

I did not give him time to recover.

"I graduated from the Wharton School of Business," I told him, keeping my tone strictly professional. "I maintained a full scholarship for three consecutive years. I hold dual degrees in Economics and Corporate Law."

He turned his head slightly, tuning his ear to my voice.

"I can read balance sheets faster than your current accountants," I stated. "I can find the loopholes in your father's trust. I can be your eyes in the boardroom."

"My lawyers do that," Adrian countered.

"Your lawyers are paid by the hour," I said. "I am bound to you by a marriage certificate. My success is entirely dependent on yours."

He uncrossed his arms. "Go on."

"I know you won't ever be interested in me," I said flatly. "But I know we are both highly interested in money and power. So, let's cooperate."

"Cooperate," Adrian echoed.

"You need a wife from a main bloodline to legitimize your claim as the Ashford heir," I laid out the facts. "I fit the criteria. You use me to secure your position."

"And what do you get out of this?" he asked.

"You help me take back everything that belongs to my mother," I demanded. "Margaret Carter built Carter Holdings. Richard ruined it. Once you have your power, you help me crush him."

I gripped the armrests of my chair. "I have tolerated that family for far too long."

Adrian listened in total silence.

He uncurled his fists. The tension bled out of his shoulders.

A slow, calculating smile spread across his face.

"Your cooperation," Adrian murmured. "I accept."

He stepped forward.

He moved perfectly, stopping only when the fabric of his trousers brushed against the metal footrest of my wheelchair.

He leaned down. His face hovered mere inches from mine.

"But you made one mistake in your assessment, Evelyn," he whispered.

"Which is?" I asked, refusing to lean back.

"Who told you I wasn't interested in you?"
