Forced to Marry a "Blind" Billionaire, I Took Back Everything They Stole
Chapter 3
"Is that really him?" a voice muttered from the velvet-roped VIP section.
Twenty-four hours after signing our marriage contract, I rolled my wheelchair into the Ashford Group’s executive bidding hall. My blind husband walked perfectly in sync beside me.
Adrian did not turn his head toward the whispers. He simply adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke navy suit.
"They stare," he murmured, his voice pitched only for my ears.
"Let them," I replied, steering around a cluster of stunned executives. "It makes our victory cheaper."
A harsh, familiar giggle sliced through the low hum of the room.
"I knew it. Disabled people really do belong with disabled people."
Chloe Bennett stepped directly into our path, wearing a fitted crimson dress and a smug grin. She linked her arm through the elbow of a tall, blonde man in a silver-gray suit.
Lucas Ashford.
"What are you doing here, Evelyn?" Chloe mocked, leaning down slightly to look at me. "Are you two planning to kneel and beg the investors for this project? You look exactly like the homeless beggars on 5th Avenue."
I locked the brakes on my chair. "I see Richard bought you a new dress to celebrate selling me off."
Chloe's smile faltered. Her jaw tightened.
Lucas patted her hand and stepped forward, blocking her from my view. He looked Adrian up and down, a sneer twisting his features.
"I haven't had the chance to congratulate you on your wedding, Adrian," Lucas said loudly, ensuring the nearby board members could hear. "Taking care of a wheelchair-bound wife must be exhausting. Why don't you just stay home, collect the family's monthly relief fund, and live out your pathetic little life?"
Adrian remained silent. His face gave away nothing.
"This is a formal bidding event," Lucas continued, gesturing to the expansive hall. "It isn't a place for trash to embarrass the family."
I tilted my chin up, meeting Lucas's arrogant gaze.
"Mr. Lucas Ashford," I said, keeping my tone entirely conversational. "Are you stating that you find disabled individuals shameful?"
Lucas scoffed. "I am stating that you don't belong here."
"Fascinating," I replied. I raised my voice just enough to carry to the surrounding tables. "I recall the Ashford Group headquarters launching a massive public welfare initiative for the disabled just last month. It was heavily publicized in the quarterly reports."
Lucas stopped smiling.
"So," I pressed, "are you publicly opposing the board's core development philosophy? Or do you just view the company's charity efforts as a cheap PR stunt?"
The surrounding chatter died instantly.
Three senior directors standing by the coffee station turned their heads. Their expressions hardened as they glared at Lucas.
Lucas flushed a deep, mottled red. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. Beside him, Chloe shrank back, suddenly hyper-aware of the hostile stares directed their way.
Adrian shifted his weight. A faint, genuine smile touched the corner of his lips. He turned his face slightly toward me, the subtle movement carrying a heavy weight of approval.
"Let's take our seats, Evelyn," Adrian instructed, his voice smooth and commanding.
I unlocked my brakes and rolled past Lucas, leaving him fuming in the center of the aisle.
The bidding commenced ten minutes later.
"The quarterly logistics contract is the core of our annual revenue," the chief evaluator announced from the front table. "We will hear from Lucas Ashford first."
Lucas strutted to the podium. His presentation was flashy, filled with buzzwords and aggressive expansion tactics. I watched the board members. Their eyes glazed over during his financial breakdown. He lacked substance.
When our turn came, I guided my chair to the edge of the podium. Adrian stood tall beside me, resting one hand lightly on the edge of the wooden stand.
I leaned into the microphone.
"Mr. Ashford's proposal focuses on aggressive expansion," I started, my voice echoing through the speakers. "But it ignores the current supply chain bottlenecks in the European sector."
Lucas glared at me from his seat.
"Our proposal cuts supply chain redundancies by fourteen percent," I announced, sliding the first financial projection onto the overhead screen.
I tapped the side of the podium once.
Adrian picked up the cue.
"By reallocating the European fleet to the secondary hubs," he stated, his deep voice commanding total silence, "we reduce transit times by two days per shipment."
Two taps.
"This eliminates the need for third-party warehousing," Adrian continued, his sightless eyes scanning the room as if he could see every single investor. "Saving the company forty million in the first quarter alone."
We moved as one unit. My corporate strategy. His undeniable authority.
When I clicked to the final slide showing the projected ten-year profit margin, the lead investor let out a low whistle of approval.
"Brilliant," the chief evaluator announced, clicking his pen. "The numbers are ironclad. The logistics project goes to Adrian."
A scattered applause broke out.
"I object!"
Lucas bolted upright from his seat in the front row. He knocked his leather chair backward, sending it crashing to the floor with a loud crack.
The applause stopped dead.
"This bid is invalid," Lucas shouted, pointing a shaking finger at the podium. "Their proposal is a complete copy of our creative strategy! They stole it!"
Chaos erupted in the hall. Board members exchanged alarmed glances. Investors leaned forward, whispering furiously to their aides.
Chloe stood up next to Lucas, crossing her arms. "I knew a cripple and a blind man couldn't come up with something that good."
I grabbed the edges of my armrests, ready to tear their accusation apart with the timestamped data logs in my briefcase.
Before I could speak, Adrian stepped in front of my wheelchair.
He did not raise his voice. He did not yell.
"Lucas," Adrian said.
The single word cut through the noise like a blade. The room went dead silent.
Adrian turned his head, locking his unseeing eyes exactly on the spot where Lucas stood. He slid his hands into his trouser pockets, his posture entirely relaxed, yet radiating a suffocating pressure.
"You better remember the exact words you spoke today," Adrian warned, his tone dangerously soft.
Lucas swallowed hard, taking a half-step back. "Are you threatening me?"
Adrian slowly curled his lips into a chilling, predatory smile.
"Because everyone must pay the price for their lies."
