My School Locked Me in a Closet for My Teacher's Miscarriage—Then My Billionaire Parents Found Me
Chapter 2
The school nurse made Lily sit on the paper-covered exam bed while the man from the closet stood beside her.
His name was Julian Ashford.
Lily learned that because Ms. Hale rushed into the room, saw him, and went pale.
"Mr. Ashford. I didn't realize you were still on campus."
Julian did not answer her right away.
He was watching the nurse slide a thermometer beneath Lily's tongue.
The number beeped.
"One hundred three point four," the nurse said. "She needs medical attention."
Lily pulled Julian's coat tighter around herself.
She liked being inside it. It made a little tent around her knees.
Ms. Hale folded her arms. "She also needs to be kept away from the other children. Ms. Lane miscarried at the hospital."
Lily's stomach squeezed.
Julian turned.
"And your response to that was to lock a five-year-old in a cleaning closet?"
"A five-year-old who attacked a pregnant teacher."
"I didn't," Lily whispered.
Ms. Hale pointed at her. "See? She refuses to take responsibility."
Julian moved between them so quickly that Lily could no longer see Ms. Hale.
"Do not point at her."
His voice wasn't loud.
That somehow made Ms. Hale stop talking faster.
The nurse brought Lily water and a packet of crackers. Lily ate one cracker, then folded the other two into a napkin and tucked them into her sweater pocket.
Julian noticed.
"There are more," he said gently.
Lily nodded but kept the crackers anyway.
More could become none very fast.
Julian crouched beside the bed. "Lily, can I look at your wrist?"
She hesitated, then held out her left hand.
He didn't grab it. He turned her wrist with two fingers and studied the crescent scar.
"How did you get this?"
"I don't know. Dad says I've always had it."
Julian's mouth went tight.
He took out his phone. Lily couldn't see what he typed, only that his fingers moved very fast.
The clinic door opened before he finished.
Warren walked in.
Lily's whole body went stiff.
He looked tired and angry, which was worse than just angry.
His eyes found her at once.
"Do you have any idea what you cost me today?"
He crossed the room and grabbed her upper arm.
Lily flinched so hard the exam paper crackled beneath her.
"I'm sorry."
Warren lifted his other hand.
Lily ducked.
She didn't mean to. Her body did it by itself.
She covered her head and squeezed her eyes shut.
"Please don't be mad. I can say sorry to Ms. Lane."
Nobody spoke for a second.
When Lily looked up, Julian was staring at Warren's raised hand.
His face had gone very still.
"Let go of her."
Warren looked him over. "Who are you?"
"Julian Ashford."
That name seemed to mean something to Warren because his grip loosened for half a second.
Then it tightened again.
"Well, Mr. Ashford, she's my daughter. This is family business."
"Family business doesn't include frightening a sick child."
"She pushed a pregnant woman."
"That allegation has not been investigated."
Ms. Hale stepped in. "The school has multiple student witnesses who saw Lily standing there."
"Standing there is not the same as pushing someone," Julian said.
Lily stared at the floor.
He believed her.
Not all the way, maybe. He hadn't seen it happen.
But he believed she deserved to be asked.
That felt almost as warm as his coat.
The nurse told Warren that Lily needed to see a doctor immediately. Warren said he would take her. The nurse made him sign a form.
Julian stepped close enough that Warren had to look up at him.
"If you don't take her for medical care, I will make sure the authorities know."
Warren gave him an ugly smile. "Threatening me now?"
"No. Making myself clear."
Lily wished Julian would say she could stay.
She wished it so hard that her chest hurt.
But Warren was already pulling her toward the door.
She looked back once.
Julian had his phone to his ear.
His eyes stayed on her until the clinic door closed.
Warren did not take her to a doctor.
He drove home in silence.
Lily sat pressed against the passenger door with Julian's coat folded on her lap. Warren had tried to leave it at school. Lily had clung to it until he swore and let her keep it for the drive.
The moment the front door shut behind them, he snatched it away.
"You made me look like a fool in front of an Ashford."
Lily backed up.
"I didn't mean to."
"You never mean to."
His hand struck her cheek.
The room jumped sideways.
Lily fell onto the hardwood floor and tasted blood where her teeth cut the inside of her lip.
She didn't cry right away.
Crying sometimes made the hitting last longer.
"Get up."
She tried.
Her knees shook from the fever.
Warren pulled off his belt.
The sound of the buckle made her stomach drop.
"Tell me what happened."
"Ms. Lane fell."
The belt snapped against the back of her legs.
Lily screamed.
"Wrong answer."
"She tripped on the box!"
Another strike.
"Wrong."
Lily folded her arms around her knees.
"I pushed her," she sobbed. "I pushed her. I'm sorry."
Warren stopped.
"There. Was that so hard?"
Lily could not answer.
Her cheek burned. Her legs burned. Her head felt full of hot water.
Warren hauled her toward the laundry room.
"You're staying in here until you learn not to embarrass me."
"Can I have water?"
He tossed one piece of stale bread onto the concrete floor.
"You should have eaten at school."
The door slammed.
The lock turned.
Lily sat in the dark.
Again.
For a little while, she tried to decide which dark room was worse.
The school cubby had smelled like bleach.
The laundry room smelled like cold cement and old detergent.
The school cubby was smaller.
The laundry room had Warren on the other side of the door.
She decided they were tied.
Her stomach cramped. She picked up the bread and ate half.
Then she stopped.
The other half went into her sweater pocket beside the two crackers.
Three pieces of food for tomorrow.
That was a lot, if Warren forgot her.
Lily curled on the floor with her arms around her legs.
She thought about Julian.
He had told Ms. Hale not to point at her.
Nobody had ever done that before.
Maybe he had gone home now. Maybe important people stopped thinking about little kids once they drove away.
The house became quiet.
Lily drifted in and out of sleep.
Sometime later, hard knocking shook the front door.
She jerked awake.
Warren cursed upstairs.
The knocking came again.
"Warren Fowler!" a man's voice called. "Open the door."
Lily knew that voice.
Julian.
Her heart thumped so hard it hurt.
She crawled to the laundry-room door and pressed her ear against it.
Warren opened the front door.
"What do you want?"
"I want to see Lily."
"She's asleep."
"Then wake her up."
"Get off my property."
"The school nurse documented a high fever. You signed a form saying you were taking her for medical care. I called the two urgent-care centers closest to this address, but they couldn't release patient information. So I came here to make sure she was safe."
Lily held her breath.
Warren was quiet.
Julian's voice came again, lower now.
"I also contacted the county child-protection hotline. A report has been filed. So you can show me that she's safe, or you can explain to a social worker tomorrow why you refused."
The laundry-room lock snapped open.
Warren filled the doorway.
His face looked different.
Not less angry.
Scared-angry.
He grabbed Lily's arm and pulled her up.
"You're going to tell him you're fine," he whispered. "And if you say one wrong word, you know where you'll sleep tomorrow night."
Lily stared at him.
Behind him, from the front of the house, Julian called her name.
For the first time, someone had come back.
