Billing My Ex: The Queen's Glorious Return Novel Cover

Billing My Ex: The Queen's Glorious Return

For seven years, Eva sacrificed everything for Dante Morretti—bribing cops, funding underground doctors, and securing his reign as the Don of New York. But on their anniversary, Dante publicly crowned a Capo's daughter as his queen, dismissing Eva as merely his legal wife. His family, whose lives she saved, told her to manage the household and stop complaining. Then she learned he had used her emergency extraction funds to buy his new queen a penthouse. After taking a bullet for his mother the same night he was photographed with Serena, Eva calmly handed Dante an itemized bill for $367,420, dropped her safe house keys on the table, and walked away without a single tear. Now she plans to build her own empire.

Chapter 2

Eva POV

I sat on a molded plastic chair in the Famiglia's private air terminal, a place designed for swift, unrecorded departures. The rain came down in sheets against the plate-glass windows, dissolving the runway lights into a smeared, bilious haze. A damp chill had worked its way into the weave of my coat, adhering the fabric to my skin.

My phone gave a low hum against the armrest. It was Dante.

I watched his name illuminate the screen for three full heartbeats before I drew the call to my ear.

"Are you at the airstrip?" he asked, his tone clipped, stripped of all warmth.

"I am," I said.

"Good. Return to Chicago." A heavy exhalation crackled over the line. "Listen to me, Eva. Serena is the daughter of my most powerful Capo. I need her father's arms shipments. Her contentment ensures his allegiance. It is an equation, nothing more."

A notification appeared at the top of my screen as he spoke.

It was an encrypted message, routed through a dead-drop server. No sender ID. No traceable signature. Only a single detail marked the sender's identity: a faded crest stamped into the corner of the digital file—a serpent coiled around a broken crown. I had seen that symbol once before, years ago, in a Famiglia intelligence file marked "Terminated." I didn't know who had sent it, or why. But someone wanted me to see this—someone who knew exactly where to find me, and what to show me. Someone who had been waiting a long time for Dante Morretti's foundation to crack.

I opened it.

The image resolved itself from a blur of pixels: Serena, perched on Dante's lap in the same plush red booth I had stood before an hour ago. Her arms were coiled around his neck, her mouth close to his ear.

The timestamp was from ten minutes ago.

The text beneath it read: "He told me about his little Chicago caretaker three years ago. Thank you for keeping his parents' beds warm while we consolidated the city."

The floor seemed to drop out from under me, a lurch so violent it brought a sour taste to the back of my throat.

Three years. This was not a lapse in judgment; it was a long-form campaign of deceit. For three years, while I bled and bargained and buried their sins, he had been sharing my existence with her like a private joke.

For three years, half our engagement, he had been living a double life. And I had been too loyal, too trusting, too busy keeping his family alive to see it. Every kiss on my forehead before he flew to New York. Every late-night call he cut short, blaming bad signal. Every anniversary he celebrated with me in Chicago while she waited for him in Manhattan. It had all been a performance, and I had been the most willing audience.

"Did you secure those arms shipments three years ago, Dante?" I asked.

A dead weight of silence fell on the other end of the line.

"How did you—" Dante began, the foundation of command in his voice cracking. "Eva, who has been speaking to you?"

My thumb pressed the red icon, the edge of the plastic casing biting into the bone of my forefinger until the screen went black.

No tears came. In their place, I opened the calculator application.

My fingers moved with a watchmaker's precision, a cold, mechanical process of accounting.

Thirty thousand dollars for the off-the-books surgeon when his mother took a ricochet to the shoulder.

Fifteen thousand for the precinct captain to misplace an evidence locker's key.

Twelve thousand for the thermal-imaging system at the safe house perimeter.

The numbers climbed, a silent testament to a debt he never knew he was incurring.

I had bled my inheritance dry to keep his family insulated from the consequences of his life.

With the final sum glowing on the screen, I scrolled through my contacts and dialed the Chicago safe house.

Dante's mother answered on the second ring.

"Eva? Where have you been?" she demanded. Her voice was all sharp, aristocratic angles, honed by a lifetime of unchallenged privilege. "The perimeter guards are rotating, and their shifts have not been logged."

"I am at the New York airstrip," I said.

Her sigh was a burst of static through the speaker. "You went to interfere with Dante? I have told you not to do that." She paused, her tone hardening into something resembling cast iron. "He is the Don now. He has a city to manage."

"I saw him with Serena Bianchi," I said.

There was a brief lacuna. Then, the dismissive click of her tongue against her teeth. "So? Men of his station have appetites, Eva." Her indifference was a physical force, pressing the air from my lungs. "My husband kept women. Dante will keep women. Serena is a Capo's daughter. She is a useful ornament for his public life in New York."

My grip on the phone tightened. Ornament.

"And what am I?" I asked.

"You are the legal wife," she said, as if explaining a simple, unalterable fact of nature. "You manage the household. You see to our care." She released another breath, this one laden with impatience. "Cease this adolescent jealousy and board that plane. My medication requires refilling tomorrow."

She did not see a future Matriarch.

She saw a functionary. A well-trained, unpaid warden. A disposable shield to place between her flesh and the bullets meant for her son.

"I will forward the invoice," I said.

"What are you talking about?" she snapped.

"The protection debt," I replied. "The medical fees. The bribes." My voice was unnervingly placid. "Every dollar I paid from my own accounts while your son was entertaining his ornament."

"Eva, you will not take that tone with me! You owe this Family your fealty!"

"I owe this Family nothing," I said.

I pressed end call.

I looked down at the final number on my calculator.

Three hundred and sixty-seven thousand, four hundred and twenty dollars.

The pilot walked into the waiting area. "The aircraft is ready, Miss Rossi."

"To Chicago," I told him, rising from the hard plastic chair. "I have a debt to collect."

Hours later, I pushed open the heavy oak door of the Chicago safe house. The air inside was stagnant with the scent of old cigar smoke and unaired grievances. My heels made no sound on the thick Persian rugs that covered the marble.

Dante's father, the retired Don, sat in his customary wingback chair by the cold hearth. Dante's mother stood near the long stretch of the mahogany dining table, her arms crossed in a gesture of profound impatience.

"You are late," she stated, forgoing any greeting. "My consultation with the doctor is in ten minutes."

I walked over to the gleaming surface of the table. My hand went into my pocket, the brass of the keys catching on the wool lining of my coat. It took a second tug to free them before they struck the tabletop.

They landed with a heavy, discordant clatter.

Next, I pulled out the three burner phones used to contact the underground mob doctors, the corrupt police captains, and the perimeter mercenaries. I dropped them one by one next to the keys.

"What is the meaning of this?" the former Don asked. He leaned forward, his bushy eyebrows drawing together over the bridge of his nose.

"I am relinquishing my duties," I said, my gaze fixed on Dante's mother. "I will no longer manage your security. I will no longer manage your medical needs."

"You cannot simply abdicate your role!" she cried, her composure fracturing. "You are betrothed to my son! It is your place to care for us!"

"My place was vacated the moment your son publicly claimed another woman," I said. I could feel a tremor begin deep in my diaphragm, and I willed it into stillness before the words left my mouth.

"Who will manage the perimeter?" she demanded, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at the keys. "Who will coordinate the safe routes?"

"That is no longer my concern," I replied.

The former Don pushed himself to his feet, leaning heavily on his silver-headed cane. "Eva. You are reacting emotionally. Dante is under immense pressure in New York. He requires you here to keep his foundation secure."

"Then he should have paid for his own foundation," I replied. "I suggest you hire professional security."

"Mercenaries are a fortune!" his mother scoffed. "They bill by the hour! We are Family. One does not bill Family!"

"I am not your family," I said, each word landing like a stone dropped into still water. "I am your former employee. And employees send invoices."

As if on cue, the landline on the desk began to ring.

Dante's mother rushed over and snatched the receiver. "Dante!" she cried into it. "You must speak sense to this girl! She is in the midst of a tantrum and is abandoning her post!"

She held the phone out to me as if it were a crucifix to a demon.

I did not take it. Instead, I reached past her and pressed the speaker button on the phone's base.

"Eva," Dante's voice filled the room. It sounded frayed, as if rubbed raw by sleeplessness. "Do not punish my parents for my errors. Put the keys back in your pocket. We will rectify this when I fly back next week."

Before I could answer, a low, feminine voice drifted through the speaker from Dante's end.

"Dante, the Underbosses are waiting in the boardroom. The port documents need your signature."

It was Serena.

Dante's mother froze. She looked at the phone, then her eyes lifted slowly to meet mine, the blood draining from her face, leaving behind a waxy pallor.

I looked down at the small, glowing light of the speaker. "Tell Serena to manage your perimeter, Dante."

"Eva, wait—" Dante started.

I hit the end call button. The only sound in the room was the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall, each second landing like a hammer blow.

"If you walk out that door, you will live to regret abandoning this Family," Dante's mother threatened, her face a mask of crimson fury. "You will have nothing!"

"I already have nothing," I said.

I walked out the front door, into the biting Chicago wind. I did not look back when I heard the heavy deadbolt slide into place behind me.

Behind me, through the thick oak, I heard his mother's voice rise in panic. "Who will refill my medication?" But a darker question was already forming in my mind: if Dante had lied about Serena for three years, what else had he lied about? I was about to pull every financial thread he thought he'd buried—and I was going to follow them all the way to the truth.
