Billing My Ex: The Queen's Glorious Return Novel Cover

Billing My Ex: The Queen's Glorious Return

For seven years, Eva sacrificed everything for Dante Morretti—bribing cops, funding underground doctors, and securing his reign as the Don of New York. But on their anniversary, Dante publicly crowned a Capo's daughter as his queen, dismissing Eva as merely his legal wife. His family, whose lives she saved, told her to manage the household and stop complaining. Then she learned he had used her emergency extraction funds to buy his new queen a penthouse. After taking a bullet for his mother the same night he was photographed with Serena, Eva calmly handed Dante an itemized bill for $367,420, dropped her safe house keys on the table, and walked away without a single tear. Now she plans to build her own empire.

Chapter 3

Eva POV

The cheap motel room on the edge of neutral territory assaulted the senses with the chemical sharpness of bleach and the damp-wool smell of the carpet. I sat cross-legged on the lumpy bed, my personal financial ledgers spread around me like the components of a complex ritual.

My forefinger traced down a column of expenses from the previous year, coming to a halt at a specific entry.

An eighty-thousand-dollar withdrawal.

It was marked as an emergency extraction fund, wired directly to Dante's private account the week the Russian Bratva made a credible threat against the Chicago safe house.

The funds were earmarked for securing a secondary bunker for his parents.

I opened my laptop, its fan whirring to life in the quiet room, and logged into the Famiglia's secure banking portal, using the high-level administrative credentials I still possessed.

I tracked the routing numbers for that eighty thousand dollars.

The money had never touched a holding account in Chicago.

Instead, Dante had rerouted the funds to a shell real estate company in Manhattan.

The holding company had, a week later, finalized the purchase of a luxury penthouse on the Upper East Side.

I picked up my phone and navigated to Serena Bianchi's public social media profile.

Her most recent photo was taken on a balcony, the lights of Central Park scattered like jewels below. She was smiling, holding a flute of champagne.

But it was the accessory coiled loosely around her neck that made the air in my lungs turn to ice: a dark grey, Kevlar-lined scarf.

I had commissioned that very scarf for Dante two winters ago, a shield to protect his throat from sniper fire.

My breathing grew shallow. My ribs seemed to constrict, as if the air itself was being siphoned out of the dingy room.

He had not just betrayed me. He had used my own money, the very funds meant to protect his family, to furnish his infidelity.

The eighty thousand was theft. It was a separate crime, a debt beyond the blood money I had already tallied. And I would collect every cent.

My fingers, suddenly numb and clumsy, tapped Dante's direct line.

He answered before the first ring completed. "Eva. Have you come to your senses?"

"You owe me eighty thousand dollars," I said, my voice a flat, sterile thing. "On top of the operational debt."

"What?" Dante sounded genuinely perplexed. "What in God's name are you talking about?"

"The emergency extraction fund," I clarified, my tone unchanging. "You used my money to purchase a penthouse for Serena. You have three days to wire it back to my account."

Dante let out a harsh, incredulous laugh. "Are you serious? Have you become some kind of bookkeeper, Eva? It is family money. It is allocated where the Famiglia has need."

"The Famiglia did not need a penthouse for your mistress," I countered.

"She is not my mistress!" Dante roared. The sharp sound of glass shattering echoed through the receiver. "I am the Don! I make the financial decisions! You do not have the authority to audit me!"

"Creditor and debtor is the only relationship we have left," I replied.

At that moment, a new email notification chimed on my laptop screen.

It was from the same anonymous, heavily encrypted address that had sent the photograph.

"Hold," I commanded Dante.

I clicked the message open. There was no text, only a single video file.

I held my breath and pressed play.

Grainy, black-and-white security footage from the New York armory flickered to life. The timestamp in the lower corner was from exactly three years ago. October 14th.

The silent video showed Dante pressing Serena against the chain-link fence of a weapons cage. His hands were tangled in the pale mass of her hair. He was kissing her with a deep, desperate hunger. Serena's hands were moving over his chest, tugging his dress shirt from his trousers.

The pixels on the screen seemed to dissolve, and it took my brain a full three seconds to reassemble the moving gray shapes and register the timestamp.

October 14th.

That was the night the Chicago safe house was breached.

That was the night I took a bullet in my left shoulder while dragging his mother into the panic room.

I had bled onto the cold concrete floor for four hours, waiting for the underground doctor to make his way across the city.

"Dante?" I said into the phone, my voice hollowed out, suddenly alien to my own ears.

"What?" he snapped, his breathing still ragged.

"Where were you on the night of October 14th, three years ago?" I asked.

A long, damning silence stretched over the line.

"I was... securing the docks," he finally said, his voice suddenly losing its conviction. "Why?"

"I am sending you a file," I murmured.

I attached the video to a text message and hit send.

I listened to the dead air for what felt like an eternity. I could hear the faint, tinny sound of the video playing on his end, a ghost of his own betrayal echoing back at him. Finally, I heard a sharp, strangled intake of breath.

"Eva..." Dante whispered, his voice fracturing completely. "Eva, please, let me explain."

"Do not return to Chicago," I said with absolute finality. "I have ceded the territory."

I hung up the phone, pried the back from the cheap burner, and pulled the battery out.

Then I opened a new line in my ledger and wrote, in precise black ink: "Embezzled emergency extraction fund: $80,000."

The total debt now stood at four hundred and forty-seven thousand, four hundred and twenty dollars.

I stared at the number for a long moment. Seven years of loyalty, reduced to a single sum. Seven years of blood, priced and itemized.

And somewhere in New York, Dante Morretti was watching a video that proved exactly what my loyalty had bought me: a bullet in the shoulder, a mistress in his bed, and not a single moment of his honesty. He thought the worst was over. But the reckoning hadn't even begun. I was going to present this debt to him in person—and I was going to make him sign for every last dollar before I walked out of his life forever.
