Chapter 1

On my birthday, Ethan brought his petite secretary to attend my birthday party.

Melody was wearing the same dress as me, and people around us were whispering and staring at me.

"At her age, she's still trying to dress like a young girl."

As I shifted my gaze, I noticed that the necklace Melody was wearing was also identical to mine.

But this necklace was the one Ethan had bought for me on my birthday last year, and it was supposed to be one-of-a-kind worldwide.

Melody, taking advantage of the crowd, shoved me and whispered mockingly in my ear, "An old hag like you only deserves to wear fakes."

I lost my balance and fell into the swimming pool.

Crawling out of the water in a mess, I was ready to slap Melody back, but as I raised my hand, it was stopped before I could follow through.

"Scarlett, look at yourself! What a mess!"

It was Ethan. I looked at him in disbelief.

He said, "If you don't want to enjoy your birthday, then get out."

I pushed him away and left the banquet hall alone.

Behind me, he jeered, "Good riddance. At least you won't embarrass yourself here anymore."

And so, on my 28th birthday, I found myself walking alone to a law firm.

"Hello, I'd like to file for divorce."

————————

Soaked to the bone, I endured the strange looks at the law firm while consulting about divorce proceedings, then took a cab back home.

I inserted the key into the lock, but no matter how I turned it, the door wouldn't open.

Left with no choice, I called a locksmith.

Just as the locksmith arrived at the door, there was a "click" sound, and the door suddenly opened from the inside.

Ethan stood there with a set of keys, arms crossed, leaning against the doorframe.

"Scarlett, I thought you were so clever."

"What's this? Finally decided to come home?"

The locksmith cursed at me and stormed off angrily.

Having spent the night in wet clothes in the cold wind, my head was pounding and I felt dizzy. I didn't want to argue with him, so I silently slipped past him into the bedroom.

But he wouldn't let it go.

"What's your problem? You come back and give me the cold shoulder?"

He tried to follow me into the bathroom to continue the argument, but with a swift move, I shut him out.

He exploded in anger: "Scarlett, if you've got the guts, ignore me for the rest of your life."

After showering, my body finally warmed up. I walked out of the bathroom to find Ethan was no longer in the bedroom.

Opening the bedroom door, I saw Melody sitting closely next to Ethan on the couch. Seeing me emerge, she flashed me a provocative smile."Scarlett, I'm so sorry. I didn't know you'd be wearing that dress to the party. If I had known, I definitely wouldn't have worn it."

As soon as she finished speaking, she stood up nervously, looking as if she was about to kneel down.

Ethan quickly pushed her back onto the sofa. "Alright, that's enough explanation."

My birthday gowns have always been prepared by Ethan, and he usually instructs his secretary to handle it. There's no way Melody wouldn't have known.

"Oh? Then Miss Frost must come from a well-off family. After all, with the salary of a Montgomery family secretary, she shouldn't be able to afford this gown, right?"

As far as I know, Ethan's secretary comes from an ordinary family.

Melody choked up, her eyes instantly brimming with tears. She cast a resentful glance at Ethan.

He immediately chimed in, "This was Melody's year-end bonus I gave her last year."

I looked at him mockingly, "What about the necklace, Mr. Montgomery? Is this a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul?"

Ethan's face completely fell.

"Yours? What in this house is actually yours?""In a rush of panic, I realized my prized necklace was missing from its usual spot. Before I could even process this loss, Ethan's casual words cut through the air.

"Besides, you're always at home. That necklace never got a chance to see the light of day. I gave it to Melody - she's at that age where girls love pretty things."

Seeing my crestfallen expression, he softened his tone. "If you really liked that necklace, I'll get you an even better one. Come on, don't make this hard on Melody."

With that, he took it upon himself to forgive Melody and personally escorted her downstairs.

I thought he wouldn't return after that, but to my surprise, he was back within fifteen minutes.

He nuzzled my forehead gently. "No fever tonight, right?"

"What were you thinking?" I snapped. "There were so many important people at that party. How could you make such a scene? Where am I supposed to hide my face now?"

"I've already had a word with Melody. She didn't mean any harm. Can't you let it go, please?"

I fixed him with an icy stare, holding it until his facade began to crack. Then, with a forced smile, I relented. "Fine."

Ethan's face lit up. He scooped me into his arms, clearly intending to carry me to bed.

But I wasn't in the mood at all. As I was pondering how to refuse him, his phone rang.

He ignored it the first time, but the persistent ringing continued. Annoyed, he finally answered.

His irritation vanished as soon as he heard the caller's voice, replaced by a gentle tone. "Wait for me by the roadside. I'll be right there.""Jace is going to drive Melody home since she can't get a ride. It's late, and it's not safe for a young woman to be out alone. You go ahead and get some sleep."

Without waiting for my response, he was gone with a swift motion.
