Chapter 1

The deal closed at 4:17 p.m.

Two hundred million dollars, one hostile shareholder, and seventy-two hours without real sleep. I signed the last page, capped my pen, and smiled for the first time all week.

"Go home, Ella," said Marcus, the outside counsel. "You just saved your husband's company."

"Our company," I said. "And it's our anniversary."

Five years. Allen had booked the same suite at the Harrow Hotel where he'd proposed with a ring from a pawn shop. I wasn't due back until tomorrow. I wanted to surprise him.

The keycard blinked green.

The first thing I saw was his shirt. The white one I'd ironed on Monday, crumpled on the carpet like something shot down. Next to it, a pair of nude stilettos. Size six. Cheap red soles, painted on.

Then I heard it. A woman's voice, breathless, saying his name.

"Allen—"

I pushed open the bedroom door.

My husband was naked on top of her. Her legs were wrapped around his waist. The sheets had slid to the floor. For one long second, nobody moved.

Then the girl screamed and yanked the comforter up to her chin.

I knew her face. I had hired that face.

"Zoe," I said.

Zoe Pruitt. Twenty-three. Top of her class. Three months ago, I'd walked her into the legal department myself and told everyone she was going places.

She was going places, all right.

"Ella." Allen scrambled backward and grabbed a pillow. "Ella, wait. Wait, this isn't—"

"Isn't what?" My voice came out flat and clear. The voice I used in depositions. "Finish the sentence, Allen."

He couldn't.

I turned and walked out. Past the shirt. Past the shoes. My hand was on the door when he caught my wrist.

He'd pulled on his pants inside out. The tag stuck up at his hip.

"Please. Listen to me." His eyes were red and wet. "The celebration last night. The whole team was there. I drank way too much. I blacked out, Ella. I woke up and she was just—I don't even remember how it happened."

"You were awake just now."

"I was still drunk. I swear to God."

"You swear to God." I almost laughed. "That's your opening argument?"

"It was a mistake. A stupid, drunk mistake." His grip slid down to my fingers. "Ella, the person I love has always been you. Always. You know that."

Behind him, the bedroom door clicked shut. Zoe, hiding.

I pulled my hand free, one finger at a time.

"Happy anniversary, Allen."

I held it together in the elevator. In the lobby. In the cab, where the driver asked if I was okay and I said, "Perfectly fine, thank you," like a woman reading from a script.

At home, I made it as far as the bathroom.

I threw up until there was nothing left. Then I kept going anyway, dry and shaking, my forehead against the cold edge of the toilet. My knees ached on the tile. My phone buzzed on the floor beside me. Allen. Allen. Allen.

I turned it face down.

The flowers started the next morning.

White roses on Monday. Peonies on Tuesday. On Wednesday, a card in his handwriting: *I'm sleeping in the guest room until you tell me otherwise.*

He did. Every night, I heard the guest room door close. Every morning, coffee was waiting for me on the counter, exactly how I liked it.

On Thursday, he stood in the kitchen doorway like a man waiting for a verdict.

"I'll have Zoe resign," he said. "Today. I'll call HR myself."

I set down my mug. "You'd fire her?"

"I'd do anything. You want me to sell the company? I'll sell it."

"Don't be dramatic."

"I'm not." He stepped closer, careful, like I might bolt. "Ella, we slept on a mattress on the floor of a studio in Queens. You wrote my first contract on a library computer. Everything I have, we built. Don't let one night burn it down."

I remembered that mattress. The radiator that clanked all winter. Allen kissing my knuckles and saying, *Someday I'll buy you a view.*

He had. The view was right behind him, the whole city through floor-to-ceiling glass.

"One chance," I said quietly. "One. If I find out you lied to me about anything, I'm gone. And I won't come back."

His shoulders dropped. He pressed his face into my hair.

"Thank you," he whispered. "Thank you. You won't regret it."

I let him hold me. I didn't hold him back.

Friday morning, I walked into the office for the first time since the hotel.

The legal floor went quiet the second I stepped off the elevator. Somebody's keyboard stopped mid-word. Somebody else became very interested in a stapler.

I kept walking.

Then I stopped.

Zoe was at her desk.

Same chair. Same corner by the window. Same pink sticky notes lined up on her monitor. She was typing like it was any other Friday.

"Zoe."

She glanced up. Something flickered across her face. Not guilt. Something brighter.

"Good morning, Ella." She smiled. "I mean, Ms. Carver."

"Why are you here?"

"I work here." She tilted her head, all innocence. "Did someone say I didn't?"

My hands went cold. Allen had said *today*. He'd said *HR*. He'd said *I'll call them myself*.

Then the light caught her wrist.

A bracelet. A thin line of diamonds, each one throwing little sparks across her keyboard. Real stones. I'd spent five years reading the jewelry receipts on our joint account. I knew what real looked like.

I had never seen this one.

"That's new," I said.

"This?" She lifted her arm and turned it slowly under the light, so I could watch it glitter. "Isn't it pretty?"

"Who gave it to you?"

The office was silent now. Nobody even pretended to work.

Zoe ran one fingertip along the diamonds, gently, the way you'd stroke a cat. Then she leaned back in her chair and met my eyes.

And she laughed. Softly. Like we were sharing a secret.

"Allen said," she murmured, "an apology shouldn't be for just one woman."
