Chapter 3

"Fill the water glasses at table seven, Kate," the floor manager ordered.

I grabbed the heavy crystal pitcher and marched into the dining room of Le Petit Palais. The chandelier light bounced off the gold-rimmed plates and polished silverware.

I approached the corner booth.

"Sparkling or still?" I asked.

"Well, if it isn't the charity case."

I froze.

Lydia sat across from an empty chair, swirling a glass of Merlot. She wore a silk emerald blouse that probably cost my entire year's rent. The diamonds on her fingers caught the dim restaurant lighting.

"Lydia," I said, keeping my tone entirely flat.

"You really thought Bill loved you?" she sneered. She didn't bother lowering her voice. Heads turned from the adjacent tables.

"I'm working. Do you want water or not?"

Lydia laughed, a high, grating sound. "A woman who can't even afford designer brands deserves to stand next to him? You're a joke, Katelyn. A pawn in a game you didn't even know you were playing."

My grip tightened on the pitcher handle until my knuckles turned white.

"Are you finished?" I asked.

"Not quite," Lydia purred. "Bill and his friends took bets on how long it would take to break you. Honestly, I thought you'd figure it out when he refused to pay for your brother's treatments."

She flicked her wrist.

The crimson wine splashed across my crisp white uniform. The cold liquid soaked instantly through the fabric, staining my skin underneath.

"Oops," Lydia smirked. "Looks like you need a wash. Just like your pathetic life."

The floor manager rushed over, his face flushed with panic.

"Is there a problem here, ma'am?" he asked Lydia.

"Your waitress is incredibly clumsy," she lied smoothly. "Get her out of my sight before she ruins my meal."

"To the back," the manager hissed at me. "Wash every dish from the dinner rush. Now."

I didn't move. I stared directly into Lydia's perfectly lined eyes.

"I may be poor," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the quiet dining room. "But I've never had to step on someone else to prove my worth."

Lydia's smug smile faltered. Her jaw tightened.

I shoved the pitcher into the manager's chest and walked away.

For four hours, I scrubbed grease off porcelain plates in the steaming kitchen. Scalding water and harsh detergent turned my hands raw and blistered. I didn't stop. I focused entirely on the stack of cash waiting for me at the end of the shift.

At 2:00 AM, the manager shoved a thick envelope into my wet hands.

"Don't come back," he muttered.

I didn't care. I shoved the envelope into my pocket. I finally had enough for the initial surgery fee.

***

The hospital corridors smelled of bleach and stale coffee.

I slammed the envelope of cash onto the reception desk at the ICU station.

"I have it," I told Dr. Evans. "The seventy thousand. Schedule Leo's transplant right now."

The doctor didn't reach for the money. He pulled a manila folder from his metal clipboard and sighed heavily.

"Katelyn, please sit down."

"No. Take the money and prep the OR."

"We ran the final pre-op blood panels yesterday," Dr. Evans said. He rubbed his temples, avoiding my eyes. "There is a major matching issue."

"What issue? I'm his sister. I'll donate whatever he needs."

"You aren't a match." He finally met my gaze, his expression entirely grim. "The DNA markers are completely incompatible. Katelyn, you and Leo share zero biological relation."

The floor seemed to drop out from beneath my feet.

"You're lying."

"The tests are conclusive."

"That's impossible! We grew up together. My mother raised us both. He's my brother!"

"The blood types are completely incompatible," Dr. Evans pushed back. "You are O-negative. Leo is AB-positive. Beyond that, the genetic markers show no familial link. I don't know your family history, but he is not your brother."

Before I could even process the words, a piercing alarm shattered the quiet ward.

*Code Blue. ICU Bed 4.*

"Leo," I choked out.

I sprinted down the hallway. Dr. Evans shouted for me to stop, but I ignored him.

I reached the glass window just as a team of nurses swarmed Leo's bed. They pumped his small chest. Machines shrieked a continuous, flat tone.

"Push another round of epi!" a nurse yelled.

"Clear!" another shouted.

His frail body jerked upward, then fell back against the mattress.

"Time of death, 6:14 AM," Dr. Evans said softly from the doorway.

A dry, hollow laugh scraped its way up my throat. It sounded like breaking glass. The universe was playing a sick joke. I had the money. I held it in my hand. I had bled for it. And it didn't matter.

I pushed past the nurses.

"No," I whispered. "No, you didn't do the surgery. I brought the money!"

I grabbed Leo's hand. It was ice cold. The warmth had already drained from his small fingers.

"Wake up, Leo. Please."

He didn't move. My only family. The only person who ever loved me without a hidden agenda. Gone. And I didn't even share his blood.

I buried my face in his thin hospital blanket, letting the tears finally fall.

***

Miles away, Bill stood in the center of a cramped Queens apartment.

He kicked a cardboard box across the peeling linoleum. It hit the wall with a hollow thud.

"Where is she?" he muttered.

He pulled his phone from his tailored slacks and dialed my number for the tenth time.

*The number you are trying to reach is currently turned off.*

He threw the phone onto the worn sofa.

"I'm ending the bet," he told the empty room. "I don't care about the hundred grand. I just want her."

He yanked open the closet. Empty. The cheap thrift store clothes were gone. He checked the tiny kitchenette. Nothing. Every trace of Katelyn had vanished.

***

The freezing morning wind whipped through my hair as I walked out of the hospital sliding doors.

I clutched a small plastic bag to my chest. It held Leo's favorite stuffed bear and a faded blue sweater. That was all I had left in the world.

I didn't know where I was going. My apartment was empty. My phone was dead.

A sleek, black Rolls-Royce glided around the circular driveway. It stopped inches from my worn sneakers.

The driver's door popped open. A middle-aged man in a pristine charcoal suit stepped onto the pavement. He adjusted his silver tie and walked straight toward me.

I took a step back, clutching the plastic bag tighter.

The man stopped two feet away and bowed deeply, bending perfectly at the waist.

"Miss," he said, his voice smooth and respectful.

"You have the wrong person," I croaked, my throat raw from crying.

"I do not make mistakes," the man replied. He straightened up, fixing his dark eyes on my face. "We have finally found you."

"Found me? Who are you?"

"I am Alistair. And your true family is one of the oldest wealthy families in New York."

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a gold-embossed crest. It matched a faded, intricate birthmark on my left shoulder.

"It is time to come home, Miss Katelyn. Your real life is about to begin."

I stared at the gleaming car, then back to the hospital doors. Everything I thought I knew was a lie.

And if I truly belonged to a powerful family, Bill's little game was about to become a war.
