The night air carried the scent of pine and something else—something wrong. I paused at the edge of Moonstone Pack territory, my hand clutching the ceremonial silver pendant I would present to Leo tomorrow. Our mate ceremony was less than twelve hours away, but doubt gnawed at me like a persistent wolf. "Leo?" I called softly, scanning the shadowed tree line. "Are you there?" He had asked to meet me here, away from prying eyes and wagging tongues. A private moment before we would be bound forever before the pack. But the silence that greeted me felt heavy, ominous. My wolf, Lily, stirred uneasily within me. *Something's wrong. We shouldn't be here.* I ignored her warning, taking another step forward.

Betrayed by My Alpha Mate Chapter 1

The night air carried the scent of pine and something else—something wrong. I paused at the edge of Moonstone Pack territory, my hand clutching the ceremonial silver pendant I would present to Leo tomorrow. Our mate ceremony was less than twelve hours away, but doubt gnawed at me like a persistent wolf.

"Leo?" I called softly, scanning the shadowed tree line. "Are you there?"

He had asked to meet me here, away from prying eyes and wagging tongues. A private moment before we would be bound forever before the pack. But the silence that greeted me felt heavy, ominous.

My wolf, Lily, stirred uneasily within me. *Something's wrong. We shouldn't be here.*

I ignored her warning, taking another step forward. The pendant in my palm seemed to grow heavier with each passing second. "Leo?" I called again, louder this time.

A twig snapped behind me. I whirled around, relief flooding through me—only to freeze as three massive rogues emerged from the darkness, their eyes gleaming with malice, their lips curled back to reveal yellowed fangs.

"Well, well," the largest one growled, his voice like gravel. "Look what we have here. A little she-wolf, all alone on the edge of her territory."

My heart hammered against my ribs as I backed away slowly. "I'm not alone," I lied, my eyes darting frantically around the clearing. "My mate is—"

"Running away," the rogue sneered, pointing behind me.

I turned just in time to see Leo's retreating form disappearing into the trees, his shoulders hunched, not once looking back.

"Leo!" I screamed, disbelief and betrayal slicing through me like a knife. "LEO!"

The rogues laughed, a cruel, guttural sound that sent ice through my veins. "Looks like your mate ceremony is canceled, sweetheart," the leader taunted, advancing slowly.

Lily howled in anguish within me, not just from the danger but from the soul-deep betrayal. The pendant slipped from my trembling fingers, landing in the dirt with a soft thud.

The rogues circled me, their movements predatory and coordinated. I backed up until my spine pressed against the rough bark of a pine tree. There was nowhere left to run.

"The pack will know if you hurt me," I warned, my voice steadier than I felt. "Alpha Kincaid will—"

"Will what?" the leader snarled, drawing a silver blade that glinted in the moonlight. "We'll be long gone before anyone finds what's left of you."

I closed my eyes, bracing for the attack, when a deafening roar split the night. My eyes flew open as a massive black wolf burst into the clearing, his Alpha aura crackling with such intensity that the air itself seemed to vibrate.

The rogues hesitated, momentarily stunned by the newcomer's raw power. It was all the advantage he needed. The black wolf lunged, his movements a blur of lethal precision. Two rogues fell back, but the leader stood his ground, slashing wildly with his silver blade.

"Nathan!" I gasped, recognizing the Alpha's distinctive midnight fur.

The fight was brutal and swift. Nathan's jaws closed around the rogue's throat, but not before the silver blade came down in a vicious arc, slicing through fur, flesh, and bone. Nathan's agonized howl pierced the night as his right paw—his hand in human form—was severed clean off.

Blood sprayed across my face and chest as I rushed forward without thinking. The remaining rogues fled into the darkness as Nathan collapsed, shifting back to human form, his severed wrist pumping crimson onto the forest floor.

"Alpha!" I cried, dropping to my knees beside him. "Hold on!"

His eyes, clouded with pain, found mine. "Aria," he gasped, his good hand reaching for me, smearing blood across my cheek. "You're safe now."

Something electric passed between us as our blood mingled—his from the wound, mine from a cut I hadn't noticed on my palm. A warmth spread through my chest, unfamiliar yet undeniable.

Lily whimpered in confusion. *What is this feeling?*

I didn't know, but as I pressed my shirt against Nathan's wound, desperately trying to stem the bleeding, I felt a connection forming—a bond born of blood and sacrifice that would change everything.

Behind us, forgotten in the dirt, lay the mate pendant meant for a coward who had fled without a backward glance.

The Pierre Hotel smelled like gardenias and old money. I stood just inside the ballroom entrance and let the scene wash over me. Crystal chandeliers threw soft light across a hundred faces I didn't recognize and a dozen I did. Women in gowns that cost more than cars. Men in tuxedos that fit like they were born wearing them. Waiters gliding between clusters of conversation with trays of champagne so pale it looked like liquid gold. Six years ago, I would have been one of those waiters. I took a glass from a passing tray and didn't drink it. My steel-gray gown was custom Valentino, fitted so precisely it felt like armor. It cost more than my entire first-year scholarship at Columbia.

The lingerie felt like a mistake the moment I slipped it on. I stood in our penthouse bathroom—all marble and chrome, cold as a morgue—staring at my reflection. Black lace. Nothing too obvious. The saleswoman at La Perla had promised it was elegant, sophisticated. I'd nodded like I knew what I was doing, like I hadn't spent the last five years sleeping alone in a king-sized bed while my husband worked through the night in his study. Five years. Our anniversary. I twisted my wedding ring. The platinum band caught the light, throwing fractured rainbows across the mirror.
