The water was so cold it burned. I plunged into Moonfall Lake without hesitation, my seven-month pregnant belly weighing me down as I swam toward Dylan. Silver-tipped arrows rained from the trees above, and rogues' howls pierced the night air. My wolf, Luna, clawed at my consciousness, desperate to protect our mate and our unborn pup. "Dylan!" I screamed as an arrow whizzed past his head. "Get down!" His eyes widened in horror as he realized what I was doing. "Grace, no! The water's freezing—you'll kill yourself!" "I'd rather die than watch you die," I gasped, reaching him just as another arrow narrowly missed his shoulder. I shoved him down, using my body as a shield between him and the attackers. The cold enveloped me instantly, stealing my breath.

Betrayed by Alpha Mate Chapter 1

The water was so cold it burned.

I plunged into Moonfall Lake without hesitation, my seven-month pregnant belly weighing me down as I swam toward Dylan. Silver-tipped arrows rained from the trees above, and rogues' howls pierced the night air. My wolf, Luna, clawed at my consciousness, desperate to protect our mate and our unborn pup.

"Dylan!" I screamed as an arrow whizzed past his head. "Get down!"

His eyes widened in horror as he realized what I was doing. "Grace, no! The water's freezing—you'll kill yourself!"

"I'd rather die than watch you die," I gasped, reaching him just as another arrow narrowly missed his shoulder. I shoved him down, using my body as a shield between him and the attackers.

The cold enveloped me instantly, stealing my breath. My pregnancy made it impossible to swim with my usual grace, but I managed to keep us both submerged as Dylan fought off the rogues above the water's surface.

"Hold your breath," I whispered, my lips already turning blue. "I won't let them hurt you."

For an entire day and night, I remained in that frozen hell. Sometimes Dylan would surface to fight, then dive back down to check on me. Each time, his eyes showed more panic as my body temperature dropped lower.

"Stay awake, Grace," he pleaded during one of those moments. "Our pup needs you."

But I could feel something changing inside me. The cold was too extreme, the trauma too great. By the time Marcus and the other warriors finally drove the rogues away, my body had already made the terrible choice.

"They're gone," Dylan said, pulling me from the water. "Grace, you're barely breathing."

I looked down at my stomach, already knowing what had happened. "The pup..."

His face crumpled as he felt the stillness where there should have been life. "I'm so sorry."

---

Three months later, the Silvercrest Pack gathered under the full moon. I stood in the center of the ceremonial circle, my body still aching from the loss but my heart hopeful once more.

"Today," Dylan announced, his Alpha voice carrying across the clearing, "I claim Grace Hart as my Luna and eternal mate."

The pack howled their approval as he approached me. His eyes held mine, filled with what looked like genuine love.

"You've sacrificed everything for me," he said, loud enough for everyone to hear. "Today, I make you mine forever."

He lowered his head to my neck, his breath warm against my skin. "Are you ready?"

I nodded, tilting my head to expose the vulnerable curve where neck met shoulder. "I've been ready since the day we met."

His canines extended, gleaming in the moonlight. When they pierced my skin, the bond snapped into place—a warm, golden thread connecting our souls. My wolf purred with satisfaction as the sacred connection solidified.

"Mine," he growled against my skin.

"Yours," I agreed, feeling complete for the first time since losing our pup.

The pack erupted in cheers as Dylan marked me as his Luna. For weeks afterward, I felt the difference—the respect in their eyes, the way they deferred to me. My sacrifices had finally been acknowledged.

---

Seven months into my second pregnancy, something changed.

Dylan began disappearing for hours, then days. Each time he returned, his scent carried traces of something—someone—unfamiliar. My wolf paced restlessly, sensing something wrong but unable to identify it.

"Where were you?" I asked one evening, watching him remove his jacket.

"Pack business," he replied vaguely. "Nothing for you to worry about."

But the scent clinging to him made Luna snarl. It was floral and sweet—definitely not pack-related business.

By the seventh day of his absence, I couldn't take it anymore. Our mind-link calls went unanswered, and even Marcus seemed unsure of his whereabouts.

"He's the Alpha," Marcus said uncomfortably. "He doesn't have to report his movements."

But I was his Luna, carrying his pup. Something was terribly wrong.

"I need to find him," I said, one hand resting protectively on my swollen belly.

I followed his scent trail across pack territories, ignoring the protests of my pregnant body. The trail led me to an inter-pack gathering at the neutral territory border.

And there he was.

My mate. My Alpha. My everything.

With another woman clinging to his arm.

She was beautiful in a delicate way that made my heart sink. Her hand rested possessively on Dylan's forearm as she laughed at something he said.

But what froze my blood wasn't just their closeness—it was what hung around her neck.

My ceremonial Luna necklace. The one Dylan had claimed was lost during the rogue attack.

The one he'd given to me when he marked me as his mate.

The champagne in my glass was vintage Dom Pérignon, crisp and biting against my tongue, but the air in the ballroom tasted stale. It was the specific staleness of old money and desperate ambition mixing under the heat of a thousand crystal chandeliers. I stood near the periphery, away from the frenetic energy of the dance floor. My fingers idly traced the rim of the flute. I wasn't hiding, exactly. I was observing. Three years ago, crowds like this would have made my heart hammer against my ribs like a trapped bird. Now, I just felt a quiet, observant calm. I adjusted the silk of my gown—a deep midnight blue that Adrian had selected because he said it matched the quiet storm in my eyes.

Three perfect years with my mate, and tonight I wanted everything to be perfect. "Do you think he'll like the surprise?" I asked my reflection, adjusting the moonstone pendant that had been my mother's. It was the last thing she'd given me before passing, and I wore it only on special occasions. My wolf, Aria, purred with satisfaction. *He'll love it. You've prepared his favorite meal.* I glanced at the dining room table, set with our finest china and candles. The roast was resting, vegetables steaming, and a bottle of aged red wine—Tyson's favorite—hidden in the car for the final touch. "He should be home any minute," I murmured, checking my phone.
