Betrayal Cost Me My Baby

The taxi pulled up to our brownstone three hours earlier than Grant expected me home. I'd managed to wrap up my business meetings ahead of schedule, eager to surprise my husband with the good news about the contract I'd secured. Three years of marriage, and I still felt that flutter of excitement at the thought of seeing him unexpectedly. I slipped my key into the lock as quietly as possible, picturing his face when I walked through the door. The house was silent except for the low murmur of Grant's voice coming from his study. He was probably on a business call—he always worked late when I was away. "I never meant for it to go this far," I heard him say, his voice carrying through the partially open door. Something in his tone made me pause in the hallway, my hand still clutching my overnight bag. "You know I never loved her, not really. It was always you, Mallory." My sister's name hit me like a physical blow.

Betrayal Cost Me My Baby Chapter 1

It was always you, Mallory."

My sister's name hit me like a physical blow. I pressed my back against the wall, heart hammering against my ribs.

"What happened at the festival three years ago—" Grant continued, his voice dropping lower, forcing me to inch closer to the door, "—I planned the whole thing. I couldn't stand seeing her with Damon, watching them plan their future together while you and I..."

The festival. Three years ago. The night that changed everything. The night I was violated, the night my engagement to Damon ended, the night Grant appeared as my protector, my savior.

Except he wasn't my savior. He was the architect of my destruction.

"I married her out of guilt, you know that," he continued, unaware that his words were dismantling my entire reality. "But it's always been you. It's only ever been you."

I must have made a sound—a gasp, a whimper, I don't know—because suddenly Grant's voice stopped. I didn't wait to be discovered. On trembling legs, I fled upstairs to our bedroom, locking the door behind me just as I heard his study door open fully.

"Rose?" His voice called from downstairs, confusion mingling with alarm. "Is that you?"

I pressed my hands over my mouth, sliding down against the door until I hit the floor. Our wedding photos stared down at me from the dresser—his smile, my radiant happiness, all of it a carefully constructed lie.

How had I not seen it? The way he always tensed when Mallory visited. The mysterious text messages. The business trips that coincided with my sister's absences from her own home. The way he never quite looked me in the eye when he said he loved me.

"Rose, are you up there?" His footsteps on the stairs now, heavy and deliberate. The doorknob rattled. "Rose, open the door. When did you get home?"

"Go away," I managed, my voice a stranger's—thin and brittle.

"Rose, please. Whatever you think you heard—"

"I heard enough!" The words tore from my throat. "The festival. You planned it. You—you destroyed my life so you could have me, when all along you wanted my sister?"

Silence on the other side of the door. Then, softly: "It wasn't like that."

But it was exactly like that. I curled into myself, three years of memories reshaping themselves in my mind. The distant looks. The perfume on his collar that I'd convinced myself was a coworker's. The way Mallory always seemed to know our private business. The expensive bracelet I'd found in his drawer last Christmas that never made its way to my wrist, but appeared on my sister's two weeks later.

I'd been living in a beautiful glass house that had always been empty.

Two weeks later, I sat in Dr. Winters' office, staring blankly at the pale blue wall behind her head as she reviewed my test results. Grant thought I was shopping with a friend. Another lie to add to the collection we'd been exchanging since that night.

"Rose?" Dr. Winters' gentle voice pulled me back to the present. "Did you hear what I said?"

I blinked, focusing on her kind face. "I'm sorry, could you repeat that?"

She smiled, placing her hand over mine. "You're pregnant, Rose. About six weeks along."

The room seemed to tilt sideways. Pregnant. A child. Grant's child.

"Are you alright?" Dr. Winters asked, concern etching her features.

Was I alright? I was carrying the child of a man who had orchestrated my violation, married me out of guilt, and loved my sister the entire time. A man whose betrayal had shattered every truth I thought I knew about my life.

My hand drifted to my still-flat stomach, a primal protective instinct surfacing through the chaos of my emotions. This innocent life knew nothing of its father's sins, nothing of its mother's broken heart.

"I'm fine," I lied, adding another untruth to the tapestry of my existence. "Just surprised."

As I left the doctor's office, stepping into the bright spring sunshine that seemed to mock my inner darkness, one thought crystallized with perfect clarity: I needed to protect this child—from Grant, from Mallory, from the toxic web they had woven around me.

And to do that, I needed to be stronger than I'd ever been.
