Betrayal at Sterling Novel Cover

Betrayal at Sterling

I stood before the mirror in my Manhattan penthouse, carefully wrapping medical tape around my injured finger. The cut wasn't deep, but it stung—a small price to pay for my excitement yesterday while preparing Ryan's surprise. Two years of hiding my true identity were finally coming to an end. Today was the day I'd tell him everything. "You've got this, Victoria," I whispered to my reflection, rehearsing the words I'd practiced a dozen times. "Ryan, I have something to tell you. I'm not just Victoria... I'm Victoria Sterling. And starting Monday, I'm the new CEO of Sterling Industries." The words still felt strange on my tongue. For two years, I'd been living this carefully constructed normal life—the deal I'd made with my father.

Chapter 1

I stood before the mirror in my Manhattan penthouse, carefully wrapping medical tape around my injured finger. The cut wasn't deep, but it stung—a small price to pay for my excitement yesterday while preparing Ryan's surprise. Two years of hiding my true identity were finally coming to an end. Today was the day I'd tell him everything.

"You've got this, Victoria," I whispered to my reflection, rehearsing the words I'd practiced a dozen times. "Ryan, I have something to tell you. I'm not just Victoria... I'm Victoria Sterling. And starting Monday, I'm the new CEO of Sterling Industries."

The words still felt strange on my tongue. For two years, I'd been living this carefully constructed normal life—the deal I'd made with my father. Two years to experience the world without the weight of the Sterling name, to pursue my passion for social media, to find love based on who I was, not what I was worth.

And I had found it with Ryan. Sweet, ambitious Ryan, who thought I was just an unemployed trust fund kid living off my parents. Today, I'd give him the keys to the BMW I'd secretly bought him and watch his face light up when he realized our future was secure. More than secure—it was golden.

I smoothed down my cashmere sweater and checked my watch. We were meeting at our favorite coffee shop in SoHo in forty-five minutes. Perfect timing.

Downstairs, I hailed a car service instead of having our driver take me. One last ride as the Victoria everyone thought they knew.

As the car weaved through Manhattan traffic, memories of Ryan and me at that little coffee shop flooded back. Our first real date, where he'd spilled cappuccino on his shirt and blushed so deeply I couldn't help but fall a little in love. The rainy afternoon when we'd huddled by the window, planning imaginary vacations we could take "someday" when we could afford it. If only he knew.

The car pulled up half a block from the café, and I stepped out into the crisp autumn air, clutching the small gift box containing the BMW keys. My heart raced with anticipation. This wasn't just about revealing my wealth—it was about starting our real life together, no more secrets between us.

I spotted our usual table through the window and quickened my pace, a smile spreading across my face. Just a few more steps to the beginning of everything.

That's when I felt it—a violent collision as someone slammed into me from the side. I stumbled, losing my balance completely, and went sprawling onto the sidewalk. My palms scraped against concrete, and my fingers twisted painfully beneath me.

"Oh my God!" came a familiar voice, dripping with false concern. "Victoria, you should really watch where you're going!"

I looked up through a curtain of hair to see Madison standing over me, her designer heels inches from my splayed fingers. Not by accident—she deliberately stepped forward, grinding the pointed heel onto my fingers. Pain shot up my arm as I gasped.

"My Hermès!" Madison shrieked, holding up her handbag with theatrical dismay. "Look what you've done! You've completely ruined it!"

I tried to push myself up with my uninjured hand. "Madison, I didn't touch your—"

"Victoria?"

My heart leapt at Ryan's voice, then immediately sank at his tone. He wasn't rushing to help me up. He was standing beside Madison, his expression hardening as he took in the scene.

"What did you do?" he demanded, looking down at me as if I were a stranger.

"I didn't—" I began, but Madison cut me off.

"She crashed right into me, Ryan! Look at my bag—it's completely scuffed. Do you know how much this costs?"

Ryan's eyes darted from Madison's bag to my crumpled form on the sidewalk, and in that moment, I saw something in him I'd never seen before—contempt.

"Jesus, Victoria. Can't you just act normal for once?" He ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "First the job interview stunt yesterday, and now this?"

Madison slipped her arm through his, leaning close. "We should go. We'll be late for the meeting at Sterling Industries."

Ryan nodded, not even offering to help me up. "Yeah, let's go."

I watched in stunned silence as he opened the passenger door of the BMW—the very car I'd bought him—for Madison. As they pulled away toward Midtown, I remained on the sidewalk, the gift box with the duplicate keys still clutched in my bleeding hand, the truth still unspoken on my lips.
