Chapter 1

Jessica has just landed her dream job and sold the film rights to her novels. Then she stumbles across an online post from her closest friend, Linda, asking strangers how to ruin her life. When Linda tries to sabotage Jessica's career, expose her pen name, steal her boyfriend, and destroy her author account, Jessica quietly gathers every piece of evidence and turns Linda's own schemes against her. By the time Linda realizes she has been caught, Jessica is ready to send her former best friend to prison and take back everything she earned.

"Why aren't you eating, Jessica?"

The instant our eyes met, the jealousy in Linda's gaze vanished, replaced by a sweet smile.

"I went out specifically to buy these for you yesterday."

I forced a smile.

"I'll eat in a bit. Let me work first."

I opened my laptop, set it on my lap, and mirrored the post on the screen.

"Sure."

Linda answered cheerfully, then went back to fiddling with her phone.

A few new comments from the OP appeared under the post.

[OP LLLIN: Oh, what an act. Strawberries aren't good enough for her now?]

[OP LLLIN: Right, why would she care about my crappy fruit when she's selling film rights and rolling in money?]

[OP LLLIN: She just smiled at me. Disgusting. She's so smug about that fancy job. What a bitch.]

I stared at the screen, my whole body went cold.

Linda's fingers danced lightly across her phone keyboard, and those poisonous words crawled out one by one like snakes.

"What are you up to?"

I asked, casual.

"Nothing. Just chatting with a friend."

Linda looked up, smile still sweet and innocent.

"She's having a rough time lately. Met someone really awful, just venting to me."

"Is that so."

I stood up and headed for the bathroom. I'd thought of Linda as my best friend my whole life. I never imagined I was the "really awful" person in her head.

"I'm going to the bathroom."

"Okay! Don't forget to eat the fruit when you come back!"

I locked the bathroom door behind me, sat down on the toilet, and kept reading Linda's post.

Maybe it was because the title was outrageous enough—within minutes, the post had hundreds of replies.

[Appless: Oh my god, that person is actually your friend???]

[CATTIY: This is sick! Your friend got a great job AND writes novels and instead of being happy for her you want to stab her in the back? You're going to hell. God doesn't bless people like you.]

[ppHappy: What are you even going to do? Does her company forbid writing novels? That's not reasonable—it's her legitimate income.]

[QU: Damn, you're like a sewer rat. Can't stand seeing other people happy.]

[sua: Why is the algorithm pushing this to ME? Push it to OP's friend! Get her away from this trash!]

[umay: Did your friend steal your spot? If you didn't get picked, doesn't that mean she's better than you? Instead of stabbing her in the back, work on yourself.]

The comments pissed Linda off.

[OP LLLIN: What do you know! She's been a step below me her whole life. A loser who couldn't even get into a PhD program—what gives her the right to look down on me?!]

[OP LLLIN: How is this not in my way?! There's only ONE position at this company this year! What am I supposed to do now that she got it?! Are the interviewers blind?? She must've gotten lucky—or pulled some shady move!]

[OP LLLIN: Why does SHE get to live better than me? Quit lecturing me from your high horses—just tell me how to destroy her!]

The heavy oak doors of the Crane estate splintered under the battering ram. Annetta was just putting her five-year-old daughter to sleep when the SWAT team stormed the nursery. They told her that her husband, Major Alek Crane, was killed in action overseas. But instead of a hero's funeral, he was branded a national traitor, and the feds were seizing every penny of their wealth. Lead investigator Issac Rocha dragged Alek's charred remains into the grand hall just to mock him. He stripped Annetta of her wedding band, confiscated her winter coat, and officially exiled her, her daughter, and her hostile mother-in-law to a freezing Appalachian death zone. In the federal holding cell, the extended family turned on Annetta, calling her a cheap commoner and leaving her to shiver on the concrete floor. They were dumped in an abandoned mining town with nothing but canvas jumpsuits to die in the snow. Annetta knew Alek was framed in a ruthless political hit. Issac Rocha wanted them to rot in the mud and freeze to death, completely forgotten by the world. "We are going to live, and we are going to burn Issac Rocha to the ground." But Issac made one fatal mistake. He didn't know the quiet, submissive daughter-in-law had spent the last three years secretly building a military-grade doomsday bunker right in the heart of that very mountain. Stepping past the freezing mud, Annetta initiated the biometric scan, and the massive steel blast doors slowly swung open.
