Chapter 5

“So how was your first day of school here at the lovely Pine Valley High School?” Aaron asks as we gather our things and head to the bus pick up area.

I think about it for a minute. “Honestly it was pretty good. I think I am going to like it here.”

Aaron smiles. “I’m glad you like it here.”

The bus ride home is uneventful. Aaron and I sit in the very back seat where me and Logan had sat this morning. “So where do you live?” I ask Aaron after several stops.

“About a block away from you and Logan.”

“Really?” I ask shocked.

Aaron nods his head. “Yep. Pretty cool huh? We actually all live within about a three block radius from each other.”

“That’s awesome.” I say amazed. At my old schools I never lived anywhere close to any of my friends.

“Hey, you want to hang out at my house? Until the rest of the guys get out of practice.” Aaron asks as we get near my street.

“Sure.”

Aaron smiles and a couple of stops later he stands. “This is me.”

I follow him off the bus. His house is a beautiful light blue color, two stories and a surprisingly large yard with a privacy fence around the back. “Your house is very pretty.”

Aaron laughs. “Thanks mom will be happy to hear it. Nobody’s home right now. Mom and dad are both at work.”

“Oh okay. Is it alright that I’m here with you?”

Aaron looks me up and down. “Yes, it is. So, you want to watch some T.V. or play a video game?”

“Whatever you want to do.” I say with a smile.

Aaron pats the bed beside him. “Do you like scary movies?”

“I love scary movies.” I tell him as I sit on the bed next to him.

“Good. Me too.”

Aaron turns on a scary movie, and we settle into a comfortable silence as the movie begins. Scary movies always seem to suck at the beginning. That never seems to last long and as much as I love scary movies, I am also a big scaredy cat. An unexpected jump scare makes me scream and I cover my eyes with my hands.

Aaron burst out laughing. “I thought you loved scary movies.”

I smack his arm. “Shut up. I do love scary movies.”

“Are you sure about that? You just about jumped off the bed.”

I scoff. “I did not. I was just caught off guard.”

“Uh huh.” Aaron says laughing. “Well, if you get scared again, I will protect you.”

I roll my eyes but scoot a little closer to him on the bed. “Son of a bitch.” I scream when another jump scare gets me. “I hate this movie.”

Aaron snorts. “You are so damn cute. Come over here.” Aaron wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me closer to him on the bed.

About five amazing minutes pass without anything scary happening and then BAM! I scream and turn my head into Aaron’s chest. Who gladly wraps his arms tighter around me. “Where did you find this damn movie?”

Aaron laughs. “I love this movie I can’t believe you have never seen it before.”

“I probably would have died of a heart attack if I watched it by myself.”

“I don’t think I have ever laughed this much during a scary movie.” Aaron says as he rubs my shoulder.

“You know what. I hate you and this damn movie.”

Aaron laughs even harder and I can’t help but smile. The movie continues about the same. A few beautiful minutes of peace and then BAM! I get the shit scared out of me all over again.

“A-Rod!” A man’s voice comes from downstairs.

“Up here!” Aaron yell’s back.

“Is that Logan?” I ask.

Aaron nods his head, and Logan comes through the bedroom door. “Hey A-Rod. What’s up? Lilly? I didn’t know you were here.”

Aaron laughs and I elbow him in the side. Logan looks at both of us with furrowed brows. “What’s so funny?”

I look at Aaron for a second then at Logan. “Aaron is being a dick.”

Logan and Aaron burst out laughing. Aaron shakes his head. “She’s a big scaredy puss who supposedly loves scary movies but keeps jumping and screaming every time something happens.”

“You want to watch with us?” I ask Logan trying to change the subject from me and jumpiness.

“Sure.” Logan says and me and Aaron scoot over a little to make room for Logan on the bed.

Not even a minute after Logan sits down on the bed, something scares the hell out of me and I’m screaming and clinging to Aaron like my life depends on it. Aaron and Logan laugh at me again and honestly, I feel like punching both of them.

Logan puts his hand on my thigh and those butterflies from this morning return. I give Logan a smile and he starts slowly rubbing my thigh. “You know if you get to scared, I can protect you too.” Logan whispers in my ear and I get a chill. Aaron must have heard him too, because I feel his hand tighten on my shoulder making me lean impossibly closer to his chest.

After the longest hour and a half of my life the movie finally ends but neither guy seems to want to let go of me and I can’t help but smile. “Did you like the movie?” Aaron asks and I playfully punch his chest as I sit up straight in the bed.

“Screw you.” I say pouting. Logan and Aaron laugh. “Thank you for letting me hang out with you.” I say to Aaron. “I had fun.”

“Me too baby, me too.” Aaron says and I feel Logans hand tighten on my thigh.

“You ready to go home? I can give you a ride.” Logan says.

“Sure.” I say. “Thanks. I’ll see you tomorrow, Aaron.” I pull him into a

hug and give him a kiss on the cheek.

“See you tomorrow babe. See you later Logan.”

“See you dude.” Logan says and waves a hand as he wraps his arm around my waist and leads me downstairs.

Outside there is a red jacked up pick up truck. “Your truck is nice.” I say as Logan opens the passenger side door and helps me inside.”

“It’s actually my dad’s truck I borrowed it. My car is in the shop I get it back in a couple of days.”

“Oh nice. What kind of car do you have?” I ask with genuine curiosity.

Logan smiles. “I have a Suburban. Mom and Dad got me a big SUV so all my friends can ride with me.”

“That’s awesome.”

Logan nods his head. “Yeah, it is. I just have to keep my grades up or I get it taken away.”

“Better do good in school then.” I say with a wink.

It only takes a couple of minutes for us to get to my house. “Thank you for the ride home.” I tell Logan as I reach for the door handle.

“No problem. Have a good night and I will see you in the morning.”

“Bye Logan.” I say as I hop out of the truck. I can’t help but smile as I walk the short walk up my driveway.

“Lilly wait.” Logan yells right as I opened the door to my house.

I turn around to find Logan running up my steps. “What’s wrong?” I ask confused.

“Nothing’s wrong. I just wanted to do something.”

I give him a confused look but before I can ask what he means, he leans in and kisses me. Softly and tentatively at first then more passionately. I feel his hand sliding to the back of my neck and his tongue probing my mouth open. Our tongues fight for dominance as they swirl around each other. I can’t help but moan into his mouth as my hands find their way to his neck. I intertwine my hands in his hair, and he pulls me closer to him.

I jolted awake to the sound of Leo's ragged coughing. The digital clock on my nightstand glowed 2:17 AM, casting an eerie blue light across our sparse bedroom. Michael's side of the bed was empty—again. Probably at Amanda's, I thought bitterly, but I pushed the familiar ache aside as another harsh cough echoed from Leo's room. Throwing back the covers, I rushed down the hallway of our modest Fort Lewis housing unit. The worn carpet was rough against my bare feet, a constant reminder of how little Michael invested in our actual home. "Leo, baby?" I whispered, pushing open his door. My five-year-old son sat upright in bed, his small chest heaving with each labored breath. When he turned to me, his flushed face glistened with sweat in the glow of his dinosaur night light. "Mommy," he wheezed, "my chest hurts." I pressed my palm to his forehead and pulled back instantly.
