At My Wedding, the Groom Called Me a Rehearsal Stand‑In

Mia Carter gave Leo Hart everything: her leg, saving him in their teens, then ten years forging his fashion empire from nothing. At her own reception, he publicly brands her the person he hates most, exposing the lavish ceremony as a mere rehearsal for her best friend Serena's real wedding. Her fiancé, brother, and closest friend conspired to drain her talent, money, and devotion, then bar her from her dream job in Paris. Once love turns to ash, nothing remains to lose. Long ago, Leo swore a bitter oath: if he ever betrayed Mia, he would meet a miserable end. Now the reckoning begins.

Chapter 1

"Listen up, everyone! Glasses down, eyes on the screen!" Chris Norton’s voice boomed through the Plaza Hotel ballroom.

I sat at the head table, the heavy silk of my wedding gown pooling around my feet. Crystal chandeliers threw warm, golden light over fifty round tables. The reception was hitting its peak.

Chris climbed onto a velvet-cushioned chair. He nearly knocked over a towering arrangement of white roses.

"Careful, Chris!" I shouted, cupping my hands around my mouth. "HART company paid a fortune for those flowers!"

"Leo's fashion empire can afford a few broken stems, Mia!" Chris yelled back, waving his champagne flute. "Now, shut up and listen. We are playing a game. It's called 'Guess Who'."

A cheer went up from the groomsmen.

"The rules are simple," Chris continued, pacing dangerously close to the edge of his chair. "A name flashes on the big screen. Mia has to guess exactly how our groom categorizes that person in his head. If she gets it wrong, her entire table takes a penalty shot. If she gets it right, we all stay sober."

"I never lose," I said, leaning back in my seat.

"We'll see about that," Chris smirked. "Hit the screen!"

The giant monitor above the stage flickered. A name appeared in massive black letters: *Marcus Thorne*.

"Oh, easy," I answered instantly. "HART company's most irritating board member. Leo calls him 'The Human Headache'."

Leo sat beside me. He didn’t nod, but Chris pointed a finger at me.

"Spot on!" Chris cheered. "Next name!"

The screen flashed again: *Sarah Jenkins*.

"The seamstress who saved the spring collection," I said, smiling at the memory. "Leo considers her a miracle worker."

"Two for two!" Chris shouted.

The bridal party slammed their hands on the tables in a drumroll. A champagne tower nearby caught the chandelier's light, throwing fractured gold spots across the room.

I picked up my glass, feeling a surge of pride. Ten years I had loved Leo Hart. Ten years of building his brand, standing by his side through every crisis. I knew his mind better than I knew my own. Today was the finish line.

"Alright, let's raise the stakes," Chris announced.

The screen went black for a second. Then, two words appeared.

*Mia Carter*.

My name.

The drumming grew louder. The bridesmaids whistled.

I turned to look at Leo. His profile was carved from stone. He stared straight ahead at the screen.

I lifted my champagne glass, holding it up to the light.

"The one he loves most," I said.

I waited for the applause to erupt. I waited for Leo to smile, to lean over and kiss me in front of three hundred guests.

Instead, the room went completely quiet.

The drumming stopped. The cheers died in the throats of the bridal party.

Leo finally turned his head. His eyes were flat, completely detached from the celebration around us.

"Serena," he said.

The name dropped into the silence.

Serena. My best friend.

My fingers tightened around the crystal stem. The glass felt suddenly freezing against my skin. I let out a short, loud laugh. It sounded harsh in the quiet room.

"Good joke, Leo," I said.

He didn't blink. "I'm not joking."

"You're ruining the game," I told him, keeping the smile plastered on my face. "Chris, give us another name."

Chris didn't look at the screen. He leaned forward on his chair, staring directly at Leo.

"The one he hates most?" Chris asked.

Leo reached up. He grabbed the knot of his silk tie and yanked it down, popping the top button of his shirt. The perfectly put-together groom vanished in that single, violent motion. It was as if a lock had finally snapped open, releasing a truth he had swallowed for years.

"Mia," Leo answered.

The air left the ballroom. Fifty round tables surrounded me, the neat rows of wine bottles suddenly looking like a firing squad.

I set my glass down. It clinked sharply against the table.

"What did you just say?" I asked, my voice dropping to a whisper.

"You heard me," Leo replied.

"We are getting married today," I said, gesturing to the white dress, the flowers, the hundreds of people. "You put a ring on my finger three hours ago."

"I put a prop on your finger," Leo corrected.

A chair scraped violently against the floorboards at the family table.

Ethan stood up. My younger brother. The kid I had raised after our parents died.

He wasn't glaring at Leo. He was grinning.

"Bingo!" Ethan shouted. His voice echoed off the high ceilings. He shot a thumbs-up across the room, aiming it right at the groom. "She's the stand-in bride rehearsing Serena's wedding today!"

The silence shattered.

Whispers erupted from the back of the room, rolling forward like a tidal wave. Guests leaned across their tables, their eyes darting between me, Leo, and Ethan.

*Stand-in bride.*

*Rehearsing.*

I stared at Ethan. My mind struggled to process the words coming out of his mouth.

"Ethan, sit down," I commanded.

"Why should I?" Ethan shot back, crossing his arms. "Serena's flight lands in three hours. We just needed someone to run through the schedule so everything is perfect for her."

"You're my brother," I said, the words tasting like ash. "You walked me down the aisle."

"I walked you down the aisle so Serena wouldn't have to deal with the logistical hiccups," Ethan sneered. "Did you really think Leo wanted to marry you? Look at yourself, Mia."

I snapped my head back to Leo.

"You planned this," I said.

"Yes," Leo answered.

"With my brother. With Chris. With my best friend."

"Serena deserves a flawless wedding," Leo said, his tone conversational, as if we were discussing a marketing budget for HART. "You are exceptionally good at organizing things. I needed a rehearsal. You volunteered."

"I thought it was our wedding!" I screamed.

The guests flinched.

"That's your delusion, Mia," Leo said. "Not my promise."

"Did you all know?" I demanded, turning to the line of bridesmaids in their matching blush dresses.

Jessica, a girl I had known since college, refused to meet my eyes. She stared fixedly at her silver clutch.

"Answer me!" I yelled.

"It's Serena's day, Mia," Jessica muttered. "We just... we wanted it to be perfect for her."

"By humiliating me?"

"You're always taking over," Chris interjected from his chair. "Every HART company event, every gala. You always have to be the center of attention. Leo just gave you what you wanted. Center stage."

"I ran those events because Leo asked me to!" I shot back.

"I didn't ask you to plan this wedding," Leo said. "You took the vendor list from my desk. You assumed the ring was for you."

"Because we've been living together for five years!"

"We share an apartment," Leo corrected. "We don't share a life."

I grabbed the edge of the table. The room spun. The warm, golden light from the chandeliers now felt suffocating, trapping me on this stage.

"Ten years," I whispered. "I gave you ten years of my life. I built HART with you."

"You were an employee," Leo stated.

"I loved you!"

"And I love Serena."

I raised my hand, ready to slap the indifference right off his face.

Leo caught my wrist mid-air. His grip was a vice, bruising my skin. He pulled me closer, ignoring the gasps from the bridal party.

He leaned in. The scent of his cologne mixed with the sharp tang of alcohol.

"Mia, you lost a leg for me," he whispered, his voice so low only I could hear it. "Is this wedding enough to repay you?"
