Chapter 2

Suddenly, that fateful scene flashed before my eyes. Alice glared at me, her eyes ablaze with disdain. "You? Think you can be our sister - in - law? If it weren't for Frank's stupid sense of duty to our fake sibling bond, you'd be nothing here." I shot back, "You're just jealous, Alice. Jealous that Frank cares about me." She laughed, a cold, mocking sound. "Cares? You're delusional. He's just using you." Without thinking, I dialed my parents from the Riverside Pack. "Mom, Dad," I sobbed as soon as my mom answered. "I was wrong. I'm coming home." My mom's voice softened. "Oh, honey. We knew this wasn't right for you. Come back, where you belong." I hung up, wiping my tears. How could I have been so blind? Because of Frank's empty words about missing me, I'd ignored my parents' pleas to return and take over their business. Now, I saw the truth. He'd used me, and I was done. Back at the apartment, I waited in the cold, empty silence. Then, the doorbell rang. I opened it to find Frank. "Alice is throwing a ball," he said flatly. "She wants you there. It's full of important werewolves. You're coming." I stared at him. "Why should I? So you and Alice can humiliate me more?" Frank's eyes hardened. "Don't be difficult. Just come. It's important for our pack." I clenched my fists. Little did he know, I was done being his pawn. This ball might be a trap, but I was ready to face the werewolf elite and show them the real me. "I saw the videos online. You... don't worry too much. I believe you, okay?" Frank said, his voice attempting to sound soothing. As he spoke, he rummaged through a chest filled with ancient - looking items. From it, he pulled out a bewitched pendant, its dark gemstone glinting ominously in the dim light of the room. "Here, put this on. It's a special piece from our pack's collection. Wear it to the ball. We can't keep them waiting." Before I could protest, he reached for the simple amulet I always wore, a gift from my parents in the Riverside Pack, and started to remove it. I abruptly reached out and grabbed his hand. "What exactly do you believe in, Frank? You know what they're saying about me, and yet you still want me to go to this ball wearing that... thing?" Frank opened his mouth to respond, but at that moment, his phone buzzed, and an audio message from Alice played automatically. "Of course, we want everyone, including her, to question her virtue. It's the perfect way to teach her a lesson for daring to cross me." After a moment of hesitation, Frank replied, his voice soft but filled with a sense of resignation. "Alright, Alice. It'll be done." In a fit of anger, I snatched the bewitched pendant from his hand and threw it across the room. "I'm not going to that ball. You and Alice can enjoy your little game without me."

It all clicked into place: the public humiliations, the framed financial crimes, the "accidents" that left me scarred. They systematically broke me, forcing me to give a piece of my own skin to heal Kala and staging a car crash that landed me in prison. Eli' s justification was always the same: "Kala is delicate. But when I flew to California to surprise him with a proposal at his graduation, I found him on one knee. Not for me, but for Janessa-my best friend since childhood. I collapsed on the spot. When I woke up in the hospital, the nightmare only got worse. The nurse innocently crushed me: "It' s good you' re awake. Eric was so worried, just like when their dog got sick. They' ve been such a sweet couple living together these past two years." My blood ran cold. Then his mother called his phone, asking if he had finally dumped his "ATM machine" to marry the girl the family actually approved of. Every bill I paid, every "emergency" transfer, had funded their secret life. Janessa was even wearing the dress I bought her while accepting the ring I paid for. They walked into my hospital room, ready to gaslight me one last time. But I wasn't the naive girl anymore. I wiped my tears, unlocked the evidence on his phone, and prepared to burn their perfect little world to the ground.
Rising From Ashes: The Mafia King's Bride
9.2
I discovered the dark secret my stepmother Beatrice had been hiding for years. When I threatened to expose the truth to the mafia, my half-brother Angelo and step-sister Carmella locked me in an abandoned Brooklyn warehouse. Carmella stood there in my mother's expensive silk dress, her voice sweet and venomous as she confessed how she had meticulously stolen my life and my father's love. Angelo looked at me with cold indifference, pouring gasoline over my feet before striking a match. "You're insane for threatening to break the code of silence," they laughed, leaving me to burn alive to protect their stolen thrones. My own father turned a blind eye, letting his trueborn daughter turn to ash just to maintain the illusion of his perfect family. The smell of charred flesh filled my throat. Until I died, I didn't understand. I had bled for our survival, even taking a bullet for the terrifying Moretti Matriarch. Why did my father let the bastard children of a Chicago bootlegger steal my inheritance and murder me? Opening my eyes again, the phantom heat of the inferno faded into a cool New York afternoon. I was seventeen again, sitting in the backseat of a Cadillac, just returning from my three-year exile in Switzerland. This time, I wouldn't just scream. I would marry the terrifying Prince of New York and watch my stepmother's entire bloodline burn.

"It's just a temporary arrangement," he said, as if asking me to move a plant. "She's a colleague, and she's in a difficult situation. What do you expect me to do?" The next day, he tried to make up for it with a birthday gift for Leo-a toy snake. He didn't remember that our son is deathly allergic to the peanut shells it was filled with. Leo looked at his father, his heart breaking. "You don't know my allergy, Daddy?" That was the moment I knew it was over. I had already filed for divorce, but this was the final confirmation.
