Chapter 2

DANA

Dana Greene stood by her window staring at the crowd that had gathered downstairs waiting for the Alpha to come make an announcement. It felt unusual because the last time the pack had gathered like this was the loss of a great member. Is there a loss again? She thought. If there is a loss, I as the Luna should have known about it, there had been no whispers or murmurs of the lost of anyone, even the Alpha has not told me anything about it.

“ My Luna, thé Alpha awaits you.” Her maid’s voice jolted her out of her thoughts.

“ Today feels strange,” Dana said as she turned her back for her maid to knot her corset.

“ I think the Alpha is about to announce bad news.” the maid said as she knotted the last tie.

Her heart skipped as the maid made mention of bad news. There was fear in her eyes and her heart began to race.

What could be the bad news, Alden didn’t tell me anything about any news.

She walked out of her room through the hallway with her maid following her from behind. She reached where the Alpha was standing, he stood firm, his back facing towards her.

She moved closer to the Alpha standing beside him, lifting her hand in the air for the Alpha to take in her hand, but her hand was left hanging in the air and this made her raise her head to look at the face of the Alpha who’s expression remain cold and void of Emotion.

What could be wrong?

The Alpha walked outside to where the pack was gathered while Dana followed from behind, her mind racing with so much uncertainty.

“ I greet you all of Silvercrest pack, the moon goddess has made her decision on my fate, but I’m here today to decide on my own,” he said, while the crowd remained silent as a graveyard.

“ I Alpha Alden packer reject Dana Greene as my mate.” she is to leave the pack and no one is allowed to help her.”

Those words echo in Dana’s mind shattering her Hearts to pieces.

“ Alden no! You..can’t do this. ” she whispered her voice trembling.

“ I’ve made my decision and that’s final,” he said, as he walked away his voice cold and unemotional.

Dana ran after him into his chamber, her heart pounding.

“ Alden please you can’t do this to me,” she said, her voice quivering, as tears gathered in her eyes.

“ You said you loved me. ” she sniffed, you promised we’d rule this pack together, form a strong pack, and have an heir.” she lamented.

“ what about those Alden? ”

Alden turned his back sharply his forehead creasing and his eyes blazing with red.

“ I can’t rule this pack with a cheat and a liar.” he spat out as he slammed his hand on the table.

“ wait, what? …what do you mean I’m a cheat?.” Dana raised her brows in confusion.

“Haven’t you been sleeping around with Damon?.” he said, his voice laced with disgust.

“Damon? Why would I even do that.” Dana asked in confusion.

Was that why Damon was being taken away to the Dungeon not too long ago? she thought.

“ I swear I have never cheated on you Alden,” Dana said while trying to choke back her tears.

“ I. I love you Alden, I have always loved you.” her voice began to tremble as tears started trailing down her face.

She remembers the day the moon goddess had announced her as Alden’s mate, the way Alden had looked into her eyes with nothing but love and affection. He had muttered those words to her“ I love you, Dana.”

“ I never loved you, Dana, it was all infatuation .” His cold voice jolted her back from her thoughts.

“ what about the moon goddess decree? ” Dana asked

“ That’s her decision, I have made mine. ” Alden replied

“ Alden we can work this out, I promise. ”

“ No, it’s too late.”

“ Alden, please. ” Dana walked close to him trying to place her hand on his shoulders

“ Don’t!..don’t you dare.” Alden fired at her, She flinched.

“Guards!” Two sentinels rushed into the chamber.

“ Take her away immediately!.” He ordered.

The two guards grabbed Dana by her two arms and began to pull her away, her long dress sweeping the floor.

“ Alden Noo …please, don’t do this, you are going to regret this. ” She wailed as they continued to pull her away, away from her life where she had longed for, grown and found comfort.

She was taken into a carriage, her mind began to waiver back to what Alden had said “You cheat and liar.” those words echoed through her mind hitting her like a brimstone as though she just heard them again.

She lingers her head on the wall of the carriage, her mind filled with unanswered questions

How could she possibly be a cheat, when she used to be Alden’s most lovely being, she wondered. Alden was happy the moon goddess had mated them, what could have made his feelings change overnight, What could have possibly gone wrong? Why did Alden think she cheated on him? And most importantly how is she going to survive outside the pack, her home where she has spent all her life?

Those thoughts filled Dana’s mind as the carriage slowly rode outside of the pack’s house.

The carriage stopped abruptly, causing Dana to jolt forward with the horses neighing in confusion.

“ Take her far away where she will never find her way.”A feminine voice said sharply cutting through Dana’s thoughts.

That voice sounds familiar she thought, fear gripping her mind. She tried to look out of the carriage to know who the person was but the covers of the carriage altered her view.

A feminine figure walked from the back of the carriage going into the pack house, her back to Dana, wearing a long layered black gown she adjusted her hood to fully cover her head blocking anyone from seeing her face.

Dana’s heart began to race, her palms began to feel sweaty, and her body began to tremble as cold shivered down her spine.

“ Who could that be?.” Dana whispered fear gripping her voice as she clutched her hands together trying to stop her trembling fingers.

Through sweat-soaked strands of hair, I caught sight of Reina Gomez standing near the fireplace, her eyes gleaming with something that made my wolf whimper. The ache in my left wrist always flared right before a storm, a deep, throbbing reminder of what I had lost. I stood on the expansive wrap-around porch of the Silvercrest Pack House, my fingers unconsciously tracing the jagged, ugly scar hidden beneath the sleeve of my cashmere sweater. Ten years ago, that scar had been a silver-laced blade meant for a starving rogue boy's heart. Today, that boy was coming home as Alpha. "He's late," Elias murmured from the shadows behind me. As the pack's Gamma and my adopted brother, he was the only one who didn't look at me with pity. "Alpha business," I said, keeping my voice steady. "Diplomacy takes time." But as the sleek black SUV finally crunched up the gravel driveway, the knot in my stomach tightened. The pack members who had gathered on the lawn went silent, their heads bowing in instinctual submission. I straightened my spine.

Without a hint of remorse, he pulled a pen from his pocket and signed the Do Not Resuscitate order. My stepmother, Ophelia, stepped out from behind him, wearing my favorite pearl necklace and smelling of cloying perfume. She leaned close to my ear to whisper the truth that turned my blood to ice. "It was the tea, darling. Just like your mother. A slow, tasteless poison." She chuckled as she revealed that my fiancé, Bryce, had a two-year-old son with my sister, Daniela. My inheritance had been funding their secret life for years, and now that the money was secure, I was an inconvenience they were finally scrubbing away. As my father yanked the power cord from the wall, the beeping died, and the darkness swallowed me whole.
