Alpha's Poisoned Scheme

The floorboards creaked beneath my bare feet as I made my nightly patrol through the dimly lit hallways of the pack house. Five years of this ritual had worn a path in the aged wood—five years of checking shadows, securing windows, and ensuring my little Lily slept safely in her bed. Five years of living as a secret. I paused at the large bay window overlooking the central courtyard, my fingers absently tracing the jagged scar along my side—the wound that had changed everything. The scar that had earned me Alexander's attention, his protection, his love. Or so I'd believed. A sudden burst of excited voices flooded my mind, causing me to grip the windowsill for balance. The pack mind-link—a connection I rarely felt anymore since Alexander had severed most of my connections 'for our protection.' But tonight, something was different. The mental barriers were thinner, allowing snippets of pack gossip to filter through. '...can't believe the mating ceremony is tomorrow!' '...Victoria Whitman looks stunning in silver...' '...Alpha Alexander finally taking a public Luna...' My wolf, dormant for so long, suddenly whimpered in alarm.

Alpha's Poisoned Scheme Chapter 1

'...can't believe the mating ceremony is tomorrow!'

'...Victoria Whitman looks stunning in silver...'

'...Alpha Alexander finally taking a public Luna...'

My wolf, dormant for so long, suddenly whimpered in alarm. Mating ceremony? Public Luna? The words echoed painfully in my head as I struggled to make sense of them.

Alexander had a mate. Me. We had a daughter. Our bond was secret to protect us from his enemies. That's what he'd always told me. That's why I lived in isolation, why Lily had never played with other pups, why I'd given up my position as future Gamma.

I stumbled backward, my heart hammering against my ribs. Victoria Whitman—the daughter of the Moonstone Pack's Alpha. Taking my place. Publicly.

The hallway seemed to constrict around me as I made my way to Alexander's private study. My hands trembled as I pushed open the heavy oak door without knocking—something I'd never dared before.

Alexander looked up from his desk, his powerful Alpha aura filling the room immediately. His eyes narrowed slightly at my intrusion, but his voice remained smooth, controlled.

'Sarah. You should be with Lily. It's late.'

'Who is Victoria Whitman?' The words tumbled out, raw and desperate.

Something flickered across his face—surprise, perhaps annoyance—before settling back into his usual calm mask. He slowly set down his pen and adjusted his cufflinks, a gesture I'd seen countless times.

'Ah. You've heard.' He sighed, as if dealing with a troublesome child. 'This is precisely why I keep you shielded from pack gossip. It upsets you unnecessarily.'

'Unnecessarily?' My voice cracked. 'The pack is talking about you mating with another woman!'

Alexander rose from his chair, his movements deliberately slow as he circled the desk. When he spoke, his voice carried that special timbre—the Alpha tone that made wolves instinctively submit.

'Sarah, you're being emotional. Victoria Whitman is a political alliance, nothing more.' He placed his hands on my shoulders, his touch both comforting and restraining. 'The Moonstone Pack has resources we need. Her father is dead, and the pack is vulnerable. This public ceremony secures our position and protects you and Lily. You are my true mate. Never doubt that.'

His words should have reassured me. They always had before. But something had shifted inside me, a tiny crack in the foundation of trust I'd built my life upon.

'If I'm your true mate, why am I hidden away? Why does our daughter grow up in shadows?'

His grip tightened slightly. 'We've discussed this. My enemies would target you both. This arrangement keeps you safe while strengthening our pack. Nothing has changed.'

But something had changed. I could feel it.

The next morning, unable to sleep, I found myself drawn to the council chamber. Voices drifted through the partially open door. I pressed myself against the wall, peering through the gap.

Alexander stood at the head of the table, surrounded by his council members. His presence commanded the room, his voice filled with an enthusiasm I rarely heard in our private quarters.

'For James Whitman's coming-of-age ceremony, I want silver banners throughout the territory. Ritual dancers from the Northern packs. The entire council will form a delegation to welcome him.'

'Alpha, that's more than we did for your own—' a council member began.

'This alliance matters,' Alexander cut him off. 'The boy is Victoria's brother. His ceremony will reflect our pack's strength and generosity.'

I stepped back, a cold realization washing over me. My daughter's third birthday had passed last month with only a small cake and a whispered song, lest we draw attention. No banners. No dancers. No council acknowledgment.

For the first time in five years, I wondered if I'd been protecting my daughter from enemies—or from the truth.

The bass from the karaoke bar pulsed through my chest like a second heartbeat, each thump making my temples throb. I watched Lucca laughing with his pack brothers, his arm slung casually over Delta Marcus's shoulder as they belted out some terrible rendition of an old pack anthem. The crowd was a sea of familiar faces from Silvermoon, all here to celebrate our territory's founding anniversary. I'd been smiling for two hours straight, playing the perfect Luna-to-be, but the noise was finally winning. 'I need some air,' I murmured to Mira, who nodded with understanding before turning back to her own conversation. The cool night air hit my face like a blessing as I slipped through the bar's side door. Silvermoon territory at night was beautiful—the trees rustled gently, and moonlight painted everything in silver and shadow. I took a deep breath, letting Selene, my wolf, stretch contentedly within me. For just a moment, I could pretend I was alone with the night sky. Then I heard Lucca's voice.

I smoothed down the front of my traditional Luna ceremonial dress, the silver embroidery catching the light as I moved. Three years. Three perfect years with my mate, and tonight I wanted everything to be perfect. "Do you think he'll like the surprise?" I asked my reflection, adjusting the moonstone pendant that had been my mother's. It was the last thing she'd given me before passing, and I wore it only on special occasions. My wolf, Aria, purred with satisfaction. *He'll love it. You've prepared his favorite meal.* I glanced at the dining room table, set with our finest china and candles. The roast was resting, vegetables steaming, and a bottle of aged red wine—Tyson's favorite—hidden in the car for the final touch. "He should be home any minute," I murmured, checking my phone.

The Plaza Hotel's bridal suite was bathed in soft morning light as I stood before the ornate mirror. My reflection stared back at me—eyes bright with anticipation, cheeks flushed with excitement. Today was supposed to be the beginning of forever. "You look beautiful," my makeup artist had whispered just moments ago. "Caspian won't know what hit him." I smiled, touching the delicate lace of my custom Vera Wang gown. Ten years of love, of building a life together, all culminating in this perfect day. My fingers trembled slightly as I adjusted my veil. "I'm just nervous," I whispered to my reflection, trying to calm the flutter in my stomach. The lights above me flickered once, twice. I frowned, glancing upward.
