Chapter 4

Evelyn's POV

“I'm the new Alpha–”

I staggered back, stumbling and almost falling out of deep shock but just as I was about to, a firm hand grabbed my waist, pulling me back such that I bumped into his chest.

With the dreadful stories I've heard of the Alpha, was he really doing this?

Caleb's POV

I stood in awe staring at the naked woman right in front of me. I remembered her telling me while we had sex that her mate cheated on her but this just happened two days to my installation.

“Is this a set up?” I crossed my arms over my chest. With eyes daring and darkened, I flinched my face.

“Dress up and get out of here!”

I turned around, falling against the wall as she scurried to put on her dress. I wasn't fond of women or sex and never will I be after what my fiancee did to me. I thought I was gonna introduce her to my pack members as my Luna at my installation ceremony but she chose to have sex with her cousin, an abomination I can never overlook.

Why will she do that?

“Al-pha,” the girl called after some seconds and I sensed she must have finished dressing up but still I refused to turn towards her. “I'm really sorry for what happened, I was drunk but thank you for fulfilling my urges. I'm really grateful.”

Imagine!

Does she see me as a callboy or what? I balled my fist, trying my best to control my anger. She waited for my response, the more she did, the more my anger was growing uncontrollably.

“Get out!!!” I roared so loud that the entire estate must have heard me but at this point, I didn't care about anything. They could hear if they wished.

“I don't want to see you in this estate ever again.”

I didn't think twice before saying this.

The next day, I was still saddled with uncertainty as I thought about how reckless I was. She was drunk with alcohol and lust, why didn't I stop her? Why did I let her have my body?

I walked towards the window, staring down over the garden. I placed my hands inside my pocket, sniffing in lots of air. Walking back to the sofa, I picked up my phone and tapped on my Beta’s number. Even though Frank and I are brothers, we never really went along that much. It was that kind of a rival relationship where both parties pulled it behind to execute work and carry the pack along.

Being the one that has been in control of the pack while I was away on courses and training abroad, he feels he ought to be the right person to take over. The urge for power has sailed into him no doubt. He believes this even when he knows it's not possible, I'm the eldest and the eldest is always the heir. Besides, dad doesn't really like him, he claims he's secretly manipulative but outwardly perfect.

“Hello,” I muttered with a cold voice the moment I saw the call timer coming up.

“There's a girl, drunk, who came into my room yesterday and fucked me. She claimed that her mate cheated on her and she was gonna fuck me to cool off her tension.” I paused, thinking over what I'd just said.

Regret pulled up.

“Is Frank the best person to tell this to?” I imagined in my mind, someone that is always looking for a way to pull me down. I suddenly ended the call, flinging the phone off to the sofa and burying my face in my hand.

Frank is a monster! A hidden one. How could I just reveal this to him with the hope of asking him to find more information about the girl? I wanted to ask him if this could be a set up, yet he's the one that had always been planning most setups.

I was utterly frustrated, deep within me I was praying he shouldn't work on what I just told him. I regretted this, I was just thinking it's one of the official tasks I do ask him to help me with.

While remaining in this posture, my phone rang. I took it, peered into the screen and it's Frank.

I lowered my brows, sunk in a whole lot of thoughts. I didn't want to pick it, if at all, I would ask him to forget about the girl but there was this little voice in my head asking me to pick it up. With summoned courage, I tapped on the green button.

“Hello, what's it?” I muttered with a cold tone, blinking my eyes, a frown setting on my face.

“Caleb, I have ordered my men to check the CCTV camera. Due information about her will be released to you. I'm pretty sure she's someone living in this estate or maybe–” he lingered. “It's a set up and we'll do something about it.”

“Just relax.”

“Hmm,” I sighed and ended the call.

Why is his voice sounding so cool and repentant? I wondered as I pondered on what he just said. I couldn't tell. Looking at the clock on the wall, it was time for lunch, I stood up and headed to the cafeteria.

“I still don't trust him!” I muttered to myself as I settled down. If I had a way of switching him as Beta with someone else, I will. This is possible but quite difficult, I needed strong evidence on why he can't be my Beta. What I told him continued to haunt me that I couldn't even enjoy my meal.

I was in bed, trying to take my usual afternoon nap when I picked up my phone to check if he had sent any update. The first notification that greeted me got my breath skyrocketing so fast.

“What the fuck!” I screamed, jumping out of my bed. I was in my shorts only, I hurried up to dress while staring into my phone. I tapped on the news notification.

The bite hurt more than I expected. No intoxicating scent wrapping around me like the stories always promised. Just pain. "Congratulations, Luna," someone said, their voice distant and hollow. I forced a smile, my hand instinctively moving to cover the fresh wound on my neck. The mark felt wrong, like my body was rejecting it even as it bled.

The late afternoon sun filtered through the heavy curtains of my private study, casting long shadows across the mahogany desk where pack correspondence lay forgotten. I'd retreated here after the monthly Luna council meeting, seeking solace in the familiar scent of old leather and parchment. The pack house felt suffocating lately, every corner holding memories of happier times with Dean. A sharp knock interrupted my brooding. "Come in," I called, expecting Marcus with some administrative matter. Instead, Brooklynn slipped through the door, her usually perfect blonde hair slightly disheveled, her green eyes bright with something I couldn't quite identify. Excitement? Fear? She closed the door behind her with deliberate care, the soft click echoing in the sudden silence. "Maddie, we need to talk." Her voice carried an odd tremor, and she pressed her back against the door as if barricading us inside.

"I'm sorry, Elizabeth. I can't make it to the ceremony tonight." Drew's voice carried through the phone with that same distant tone I'd been hearing more often lately. My hand instinctively moved to my swollen belly, where our pup kicked restlessly as if sensing my disappointment. "But Drew, this is the Thanksgiving Luna wellness ceremony. It's tradition for expectant mothers to attend with their mates." I tried to keep the hurt from my voice, but my wolf whimpered softly in the back of my mind. Eight months pregnant, and I'd been looking forward to this sacred blessing for weeks. "Pack business came up suddenly. You understand how these things work, Liz. You're strong enough to handle it alone." There was something in his scent when he'd kissed me goodbye this morning—something unfamiliar that made my wolf's hackles rise. But I'd dismissed it as pregnancy hormones making me oversensitive.

The morning sun filtered through the trees as I led the pack training session, my body moving on autopilot. I'd barely slept, my wolf restless and agitated all night. Hudson had come to bed late again, claiming Alpha duties kept him busy. The excuse was becoming as worn as my patience. "Luna Maddie, are you okay?" Delta Jessica asked, concern etching her features as she watched me stumble through the demonstration. "I'm fine," I lied, forcing a smile. "Just a little tired." My wolf whimpered inside me. *Liar. We are exhausted. We are carrying the weight of a failing Alpha.* I pushed her voice away, focusing on the pack members watching me.

The Moonlit Gala was supposed to be our night. Seven years of loving Colson Hill, three years as his chosen mate, and now—finally—I carried his pup. My hand rested protectively over my still-flat stomach as I navigated through the glittering crowd of Alphas and Lunas from neighboring packs. "Have you seen Colson?" I asked a passing Beta, smoothing down the simple blue dress I'd chosen. Unlike the elaborate gowns around me, I'd always preferred simplicity—another thing that made me different from the power-hungry she-wolves who circled Colson like vultures. "He was heading to the gardens last I saw," the Beta replied, barely glancing at me before continuing on. The garden. Perfect. I wanted privacy for this announcement anyway. The moonlight bathed the meticulously manicured grounds in silver, casting long shadows between the sculpted hedges.
