Chapter 5

Caleb's POV

“Alpha-to-be, Caleb sleeps with a drunk woman.”

“He's not fit for the Alpha position.”

“Alpha Caleb crosses the line by sleeping with a drunk woman.”

“Campaign to call off his installation as Alpha.”

These notifications kept on popping on my phone. Only then did I realize the great harm I'd done. I was about to leave my room when my phone rang, I frowned, thinking it would be Frank. I was going to give him the beating of his life. I could kill him now, I would let the position go. I never thought he would go this far.

When I peered into the screen, it was my dad. I hit my head. I picked it up with shaky hands already speculating what he was going to say.

“Caleb, what have you done? Why did you sleep with Frank’s fiancee?”

Slowly the phone slipped off my hand falling to the ground, I froze, staring into the open space. I quickly pulled myself back and picked up the phone.

“Sorry dad, it slipped. She came into my room when I was so horny and I couldn't–”

“Find that girl, claim her and marry her lest you forfeit your position to your brother. You have just a day!” He said and cut the call. It was as if the whole world was crashing down on me. Darkness loomed over me even though it was a sunny day. I remembered the last thing I said to her.

“Get out!!!”

“I don't want to see you in this estate ever again.”

They played in my head and this haunted me so much. I was now distracted between revenge against Frank and finding that girl. This time around, I needed to partner with someone else.

But first–

I needed to take down the pictures and clips.

Another milestone.

The name that crawled into my head was Ken. I smiled as I thought about this. Without him, this task would be so difficult but with him, it's gonna be so easy.

His line was just a second away, so I called him.

“Ken, help me with the–”

“Don't worry, I'm working on it already.”

I couldn't believe it. I had three closest friends here in this pack, two were my cousins, the ones I would love to keep as Beta and Gamma and him, he was a top hacker, tech expert and programmer. Like a watchdog, he was always monitoring the internet space, no wonder he saw these before I could even call to alert him.

Why did I even worry with him on my side?

Then something popped up.

“Ken?”

“Yes,” he answered.

“Can you please confirm the location of this girl, Frank’s girl–”

“I'll do that as well. Your dad first spoke to me.”

I went speechless. I knew the kind of person my dad was, a strict disciplinarian just like me, he trained me this way and he wouldn't spare anyone that did wrong. It was however surprising the way he stood up to defend me on this. It's love. He wanted me to become the Alpha. I'd proved myself worthy, this mistake three days to my installation couldn't pull his trust away from me. He must have known it's Frank’s handiwork.

A message popped up on my phone.

“Blue Moon Pack. Thirty minutes using flight. Find her at the pack estate. I'll ask George to arrange the logistics, even accompany you.”

I scribbled, “Thanks a million.”

I watched with awe as everything was arranged before me. I didn't need to do anything even when I arrived at Blue Moon Pack, not until I stood in front of the pack estate did I realize people couldn't do everything for me. The main battle was set to begin, which is convincing this girl. Being that I was cold and not easily convinced especially upon being belittled by someone, I thought and my wolf as well told me she's going to refuse me but I needed her to marry me, in a day, lest I cease to be the Alpha.

Emily's POV

I was wandering in the garden when a maid rushed over to me. “Ma’am, two men are waiting in the living room for you.”

“Huh?”

I tried to process who they could be but then I recalled I didn't have any friends or made any appointments here with people in my pack. I wasn't living here so I didn't spend much time relating with people, besides I come from a very conservative family. Socializing isn't really our thing, it's always business or nothing. I would say we network, rather than socialize.

“Who did they say they are and where do they come from?”

At this, the maid lingered, reluctant to say it. I threw her a cold face, folding my arms against my chest.

“They are from Liberty Pack,” she stammered.

“What!!!” I screamed, stamping my foot angrily on the floor. Frank or Caleb? I tried to guess but didn't know so I stormed off walking to the living room. My heart was fuming, I nearly burnt out of oxygen as I arrived here.

“Why are you here? What are you here for?” I lashed at the shadows of the two men who I saw right before raising my eyes to them. Seeing Caleb, the Alpha which I slept with, I looked beside him, the man beside him was Frank’s cousin who likewise lived at the estate.

I recalled his last words to me at the point I needed him to say something nice, I was stuck with shame, at the same time grateful for being that stranger that calmed my nerves. Without him, I don't know what would have happened to me.

“What are you doing here, Caleb?” I scolded him, narrowing my eyes. “You asked me not to be any way around you, what are you doing here?” I shouted at him.

Grandpa walked in, I sensed his presence.

“Why are you shouting and who are these?” He asked with suspicions. I grew quiet, I couldn't talk any longer.

The bite hurt more than I expected. I stood at the center of the Silverclaw Pack House's grand hall, surrounded by hundreds of wolves dressed in their finest, and all I could feel was the burning pain spreading from my neck. Alpha Roman Wallace's teeth had just broken my skin, marking me as his chosen mate in front of everyone. But there was no spark. No electric current running through my veins. No intoxicating scent wrapping around me like the stories always promised. Just pain. "Congratulations, Luna," someone said, their voice distant and hollow. I forced a smile, my hand instinctively moving to cover the fresh wound on my neck. The mark felt wrong, like my body was rejecting it even as it bled.

The late afternoon sun filtered through the heavy curtains of my private study, casting long shadows across the mahogany desk where pack correspondence lay forgotten. I'd retreated here after the monthly Luna council meeting, seeking solace in the familiar scent of old leather and parchment. The pack house felt suffocating lately, every corner holding memories of happier times with Dean. A sharp knock interrupted my brooding. "Come in," I called, expecting Marcus with some administrative matter. Instead, Brooklynn slipped through the door, her usually perfect blonde hair slightly disheveled, her green eyes bright with something I couldn't quite identify. Excitement? Fear? She closed the door behind her with deliberate care, the soft click echoing in the sudden silence. "Maddie, we need to talk." Her voice carried an odd tremor, and she pressed her back against the door as if barricading us inside.

"I'm sorry, Elizabeth. I can't make it to the ceremony tonight." Drew's voice carried through the phone with that same distant tone I'd been hearing more often lately. My hand instinctively moved to my swollen belly, where our pup kicked restlessly as if sensing my disappointment. "But Drew, this is the Thanksgiving Luna wellness ceremony. It's tradition for expectant mothers to attend with their mates." I tried to keep the hurt from my voice, but my wolf whimpered softly in the back of my mind. Eight months pregnant, and I'd been looking forward to this sacred blessing for weeks. "Pack business came up suddenly. You understand how these things work, Liz. You're strong enough to handle it alone." There was something in his scent when he'd kissed me goodbye this morning—something unfamiliar that made my wolf's hackles rise. But I'd dismissed it as pregnancy hormones making me oversensitive.

The morning sun filtered through the trees as I led the pack training session, my body moving on autopilot. I'd barely slept, my wolf restless and agitated all night. Hudson had come to bed late again, claiming Alpha duties kept him busy. The excuse was becoming as worn as my patience. "Luna Maddie, are you okay?" Delta Jessica asked, concern etching her features as she watched me stumble through the demonstration. "I'm fine," I lied, forcing a smile. "Just a little tired." My wolf whimpered inside me. *Liar. We are exhausted. We are carrying the weight of a failing Alpha.* I pushed her voice away, focusing on the pack members watching me.

The Moonlit Gala was supposed to be our night. Seven years of loving Colson Hill, three years as his chosen mate, and now—finally—I carried his pup. My hand rested protectively over my still-flat stomach as I navigated through the glittering crowd of Alphas and Lunas from neighboring packs. "Have you seen Colson?" I asked a passing Beta, smoothing down the simple blue dress I'd chosen. Unlike the elaborate gowns around me, I'd always preferred simplicity—another thing that made me different from the power-hungry she-wolves who circled Colson like vultures. "He was heading to the gardens last I saw," the Beta replied, barely glancing at me before continuing on. The garden. Perfect. I wanted privacy for this announcement anyway. The moonlight bathed the meticulously manicured grounds in silver, casting long shadows between the sculpted hedges.
