Chapter 1

[BOOK 1- ALPHA'S CONTRACT MATE TRILOGY]

Evelyn's POV

I'd returned back to my pack to check out how the forthcoming birthday celebration of grandpa was going. It was three days away and for three months, I didn't meet with grandpa. Being at Liberty Pack with my fiancee and working there were two major things that kept me far away from home. I missed home so much, just that where my fiance is also is also a home to me.

As I arrived at the airport, I pulled out my phone to call Frank, he was the Beta of Liberty Pack and so far was busy arranging things for his elder brother's installation as the official Alpha of the pack.

“Gosh!” I hit my forehead, groaning with frustration. Each time I remember that the installation is on the same day as my grandpa's birthday celebration, I lose my mind. I was confused on which to attend but it was my grandpa first, family first. I was his oldest granddaughter and it was a custom to be present at his eightieth birthday. This didn't mean I didn't value my mate, I valued him so much and would want to attend this installation with my hand curved over his. I imagined the paparazzis taking several shots of us and speculations about our marriage coming soon roaming the air and social media handles.

As I was sailing into this thought, the beautiful, deep voice I'd always admire for months now came up.

“Hello baby.”

I shrugged out of my subconscious mind, smiling. “Yes hun, I've arrived.” He told me to call him when I arrived here at the airport, the flight took barely thirty minutes. On the road, it would have taken two hours.

“Woww, I'm glad you've arrived. Extend my greetings to grandpa.”

“Sure honey,” I replied and then chuckled. “He will ask me when our wedding is gonna come up.” I teased my mate and fiancee, knowing fully well that this is what grandpa will ask of. Being the Alpha, he just wanted to find the best husband for his granddaughter. Although he didn't really like Frank when we started dating, labeling him as immature, he was a bit fond of him now and has been asking us to get married as soon as possible.

“I wish to see my grandchildren before I die.” He would often say. I pulled in a deep breath after the teasing and laughing. It was Frank's turn to say something.

“I know he will ask that but marriage is something we need to take time and plan for. My brother who is gonna become the Alpha in the next three days hasn't even found his mate, I mean there's nothing to worry about.” He chuckled. I grinned, taking in assurance from his words.

“Call me after you leave the house for the airport, okay?”

“Sure.”

“I've really been pushing, trying to put things in order for the main day. This installation is gonna be superb.” He boasted. I grinned, wanting to complain that both activities fell on the same day and I was confused on what to really do.

He seemed to be in a good mood, so I just let it slide. It was my decision to handle it.

“Okay, I'll extend your greetings to grandpa, tell him we'll marry soon and I'll also call you when I'm about to take the flight back.”

“Alright, my love.” He blew me a kiss and we cut the call.

Hell no!

I hit my forehead again. Right after the call, I remembered that I didn't ask of my sister, Dorlin stayed in the Liberty Pack too as both of us work in the movie industry as actresses. Being that Garlwood was based in Liberty Pack, it was the hub of many movie producers, directors, actors and actresses. We even had roles to play in the forthcoming drama series “Mine to be.”

To cut off the expenses, I had asked Frank to talk to his elder brother so my sister could come to live in one of the apartments in the estate. With this, paying of house rent would be history. Though the Alpha approved of it, yet it wasn't that easy. Alpha Caleb as he's known was firmly reluctant letting an outsider live within the confines of the estate even though there were many spare rooms.

Frank has always told me stories about him, even showed me his pictures on his phone. He has been away for three years, obtaining courses and training abroad. I've never gotten an opportunity to see before but I guess he wouldn't be really different from what Frank has been telling me.

Maybe as he's coming back for the first time, I'll get the chance to meet him in person.

I arrived at our pack estate, expecting everywhere to be set in a unique way for the forthcoming birthday. Seeing everywhere the same way I left it months ago, I furrowed my brows. A maid happened to pass by and I waved at her, stopping her.

“Heyyy. Isn't grandpa's birthday taking part–”

“Evelyn.” I heard someone call me, I turned towards the direction of the voice and it was grandpa. I left the maid and ran towards grandpa, hugging.

“Grandpa, I missed you so much.”

“You haven't begun any preparation towards your birthday or have you changed your mind towards celebrating it?” My eyes flickered and my heart thumbed. Disappointment was looming in the air, I rebuke it quite hard at heart. I hated hoping for something and it didn't come later.

“Yes,” he heaved. “It's now at the Liberty Pack and will be merged with the Alpha's installation. Caleb granted this request of mine so you can attend.”

“Huh?” I pulled away slightly. “Why would he do that?” Someone who was giving my fiance a difficult time to get Dorlin an approval to come live at the estate.

“I pleaded on your behalf and it seems he respects me so much and I like him.”

I narrowed my eyes, looking at the way he spoke with such a serious face. “Come in!” He stretched his hand to pull me inside of the living room of his apartment, whose door he was standing.

The bite hurt more than I expected. I stood at the center of the Silverclaw Pack House's grand hall, surrounded by hundreds of wolves dressed in their finest, and all I could feel was the burning pain spreading from my neck. Alpha Roman Wallace's teeth had just broken my skin, marking me as his chosen mate in front of everyone. But there was no spark. No electric current running through my veins. No intoxicating scent wrapping around me like the stories always promised. Just pain. "Congratulations, Luna," someone said, their voice distant and hollow. I forced a smile, my hand instinctively moving to cover the fresh wound on my neck. The mark felt wrong, like my body was rejecting it even as it bled.

The late afternoon sun filtered through the heavy curtains of my private study, casting long shadows across the mahogany desk where pack correspondence lay forgotten. I'd retreated here after the monthly Luna council meeting, seeking solace in the familiar scent of old leather and parchment. The pack house felt suffocating lately, every corner holding memories of happier times with Dean. A sharp knock interrupted my brooding. "Come in," I called, expecting Marcus with some administrative matter. Instead, Brooklynn slipped through the door, her usually perfect blonde hair slightly disheveled, her green eyes bright with something I couldn't quite identify. Excitement? Fear? She closed the door behind her with deliberate care, the soft click echoing in the sudden silence. "Maddie, we need to talk." Her voice carried an odd tremor, and she pressed her back against the door as if barricading us inside.

"I'm sorry, Elizabeth. I can't make it to the ceremony tonight." Drew's voice carried through the phone with that same distant tone I'd been hearing more often lately. My hand instinctively moved to my swollen belly, where our pup kicked restlessly as if sensing my disappointment. "But Drew, this is the Thanksgiving Luna wellness ceremony. It's tradition for expectant mothers to attend with their mates." I tried to keep the hurt from my voice, but my wolf whimpered softly in the back of my mind. Eight months pregnant, and I'd been looking forward to this sacred blessing for weeks. "Pack business came up suddenly. You understand how these things work, Liz. You're strong enough to handle it alone." There was something in his scent when he'd kissed me goodbye this morning—something unfamiliar that made my wolf's hackles rise. But I'd dismissed it as pregnancy hormones making me oversensitive.

The morning sun filtered through the trees as I led the pack training session, my body moving on autopilot. I'd barely slept, my wolf restless and agitated all night. Hudson had come to bed late again, claiming Alpha duties kept him busy. The excuse was becoming as worn as my patience. "Luna Maddie, are you okay?" Delta Jessica asked, concern etching her features as she watched me stumble through the demonstration. "I'm fine," I lied, forcing a smile. "Just a little tired." My wolf whimpered inside me. *Liar. We are exhausted. We are carrying the weight of a failing Alpha.* I pushed her voice away, focusing on the pack members watching me.

The Moonlit Gala was supposed to be our night. Seven years of loving Colson Hill, three years as his chosen mate, and now—finally—I carried his pup. My hand rested protectively over my still-flat stomach as I navigated through the glittering crowd of Alphas and Lunas from neighboring packs. "Have you seen Colson?" I asked a passing Beta, smoothing down the simple blue dress I'd chosen. Unlike the elaborate gowns around me, I'd always preferred simplicity—another thing that made me different from the power-hungry she-wolves who circled Colson like vultures. "He was heading to the gardens last I saw," the Beta replied, barely glancing at me before continuing on. The garden. Perfect. I wanted privacy for this announcement anyway. The moonlight bathed the meticulously manicured grounds in silver, casting long shadows between the sculpted hedges.
