Chapter 2

Evelyn's POV

“How's everything going over there? Dorlin and Frank?”

“They are fine,” I snapped. I was expecting him to ask as usual why he didn't ask when Frank and I will get married. Perhaps he's in a bad mood, he doesn't seem like one. I guess maybe he's just tired.

When it was time to go, I bid him goodbye hoping to see him over at the Liberty Pack on his birthday. I arrived at the airport and just as Frank requested, I called to tell him.

No response!

His phone rang three times but there was still no response. “Maybe I should surprise him.” A thought ran into my mind. I remembered the only thing left for him ahead of his brother's installation was a shoe.

“I'll get him an expensive pair of shoes.” I thought to myself after a while. I knew his size so I was sure of getting something that would fit. I couldn't wait to arrive at Liberty Pack. The moment I did, I went straight to the mall. I felt pressed just as I stepped into the mall, I was lucky the restroom was just across, a unisex restroom but I didn't mind.

I banged into the toilet only to bump into a couple kissing so intensely.

“Oh sorry,” I stepped backward lowering my gaze but then there was this small voice in my head, urging me to look up again.

“What?” I screamed my lungs out.

“Frank?” I turned towards the girl, her face severe with guilt. “Dorlin?” My voice was broken. “What are you two doing here?”

Evelyn's POV

My heart was shattered to pieces, my eyes grew dull and heavy and tears streamed from my eyes. I was too weak to even speak but still I wanted to know how they came about this, I'd never observed any suspicious act between my fiance and my sister before although they were really good friends.

“Dorlin,” I grabbed her shoulders so tight, hitting on her. “Why did you do this to me?”

She smirked, a kind of an evil smirk. “Frank is my spec and I've been eyeing him for so long just that we never got the chance.” She swayed her body, pushing my hands off her shoulders.

“We're free to love, right?” She leaned towards me, saying with pride. I balled my fist, gnashing my teeth.

She isn't even remorseful!

My reaction pulled up a seductive twist and turn of her face. “I'm free to love and fuck whoever I wish to.” She walked past me and caught Frank’s hand which was stretched to her. I turned to look at him with fury and anger. He held a cold stare.

“Sorry Evelyn, my love for you has died. I can't help. Since I began this affair with your sister, I've been feeling so rosy. It's been a month now, just that it's been a secret from you.” His cold face swelled into a faint smirk. Turning around, he walked away with Dorlin. She gave him a perk on the cheek, turning around to see if I was watching.

“Honey, let's go get your shoes.”

I sank to my knees, crying my lungs out. The main thing that had brought me here had slipped my mind, I was no longer pressed. Perhaps that's what the moon goddess decided to use and show me the type of man I wanted to marry.

I loved Frank with all of my heart and so far he's been supporting me. He happened to be my fated mate and it has been my greatest dream right from childhood to marry my fated mate. This broke through my bones and ended up with my wolf, she suddenly went blank like she died. If Frank had rejected me without cheating on me, it would have been different. Something was telling me from their attitudes that they were secretly fucking behind my back.

Is this why grandpa didn't ask when we're gonna get married? Did he detect something but didn't want to break my heart? So far from the moment I grew up to know things, he's a man with insights. He could detect things an ordinary werewolf couldn't just that he was a conservative person. He didn't speak much which made matters worse.

I headed to the bar, it was calling me. Frustration had completely overwhelmed me, the sweet memories I used to have of Frank with me, all these slowly fading away in my mind. It was so painful and torturing. The only thing I could do to myself now is get drunk. I know it was wrong to drink alcohol too much but I drank my soul away, then called a taxi to take me to the pack estate. At least I wasn't totally blank just that I felt this urge rising in my chest, I didn't really know what it was.

I felt I needed something so badly, my body really needed it and I had to get it, if not I might even hurt myself.

So I arrived at the pack estate and headed to the East Wing which was where the top ranking werewolves lived, including those two wicked monsters. I feel like hitting their head with a bottle right now!

As I trod along the hallway upon getting out of the elevator, the urges aroused clearly and this time around it came with a certain heat I couldn't explain. I had to take off my top, I was wearing a pink bra top that stopped midway my tummy and exposed a large portion of my boobs and cleavage.

I glared up at the room number. RM 30.

“Yeah! I'm home.” I banged in, falling on the floor. I managed to crawl in a bit so I could shut the door. Without any waste of time, I pulled out my bra top and my skirt with my pants. With the heat swimming through my entire body, I just needed to lie bare on the bed but as I rose up from the ground to go towards the bed, I bumped into muscular, hard abs.

The bite hurt more than I expected. No intoxicating scent wrapping around me like the stories always promised. Just pain. "Congratulations, Luna," someone said, their voice distant and hollow. I forced a smile, my hand instinctively moving to cover the fresh wound on my neck. The mark felt wrong, like my body was rejecting it even as it bled.

The late afternoon sun filtered through the heavy curtains of my private study, casting long shadows across the mahogany desk where pack correspondence lay forgotten. I'd retreated here after the monthly Luna council meeting, seeking solace in the familiar scent of old leather and parchment. The pack house felt suffocating lately, every corner holding memories of happier times with Dean. A sharp knock interrupted my brooding. "Come in," I called, expecting Marcus with some administrative matter. Instead, Brooklynn slipped through the door, her usually perfect blonde hair slightly disheveled, her green eyes bright with something I couldn't quite identify. Excitement? Fear? She closed the door behind her with deliberate care, the soft click echoing in the sudden silence. "Maddie, we need to talk." Her voice carried an odd tremor, and she pressed her back against the door as if barricading us inside.

"I'm sorry, Elizabeth. I can't make it to the ceremony tonight." Drew's voice carried through the phone with that same distant tone I'd been hearing more often lately. My hand instinctively moved to my swollen belly, where our pup kicked restlessly as if sensing my disappointment. "But Drew, this is the Thanksgiving Luna wellness ceremony. It's tradition for expectant mothers to attend with their mates." I tried to keep the hurt from my voice, but my wolf whimpered softly in the back of my mind. Eight months pregnant, and I'd been looking forward to this sacred blessing for weeks. "Pack business came up suddenly. You understand how these things work, Liz. You're strong enough to handle it alone." There was something in his scent when he'd kissed me goodbye this morning—something unfamiliar that made my wolf's hackles rise. But I'd dismissed it as pregnancy hormones making me oversensitive.

The morning sun filtered through the trees as I led the pack training session, my body moving on autopilot. I'd barely slept, my wolf restless and agitated all night. Hudson had come to bed late again, claiming Alpha duties kept him busy. The excuse was becoming as worn as my patience. "Luna Maddie, are you okay?" Delta Jessica asked, concern etching her features as she watched me stumble through the demonstration. "I'm fine," I lied, forcing a smile. "Just a little tired." My wolf whimpered inside me. *Liar. We are exhausted. We are carrying the weight of a failing Alpha.* I pushed her voice away, focusing on the pack members watching me.

The Moonlit Gala was supposed to be our night. Seven years of loving Colson Hill, three years as his chosen mate, and now—finally—I carried his pup. My hand rested protectively over my still-flat stomach as I navigated through the glittering crowd of Alphas and Lunas from neighboring packs. "Have you seen Colson?" I asked a passing Beta, smoothing down the simple blue dress I'd chosen. Unlike the elaborate gowns around me, I'd always preferred simplicity—another thing that made me different from the power-hungry she-wolves who circled Colson like vultures. "He was heading to the gardens last I saw," the Beta replied, barely glancing at me before continuing on. The garden. Perfect. I wanted privacy for this announcement anyway. The moonlight bathed the meticulously manicured grounds in silver, casting long shadows between the sculpted hedges.
