After My Alpha Rejected Me, I Became the Lycan Prince’s Mate Chapter 1

The bond broke at 8:47 on the night Lukas had promised would be mine.

I felt it before I heard the words. The mark on my neck — the one he'd left there when I was nineteen, when I still believed a bite could mean forever — went thin. Not cold yet. Just thin, like a wire pulled too tight. My fingers went up to it out of habit, the same checking reflex I'd used for ten years to gauge his mood from a room away.

"Nerves," I whispered to myself. My gown rustled against the dais steps. Every wolf in Ironridge sat in rows behind me, hundreds of eyes on my back. The Luna circlet gleamed on the velvet cushion between us.

Lukas stepped onto the dais.

He drew that slow breath through his nose — the one I'd learned to dread by twenty-two. Quiet. Composed. The breath he used before he cut me down in front of trainees, before he told me my wolf was sluggish, embarrassing, a disappointment he generously tolerated. I had heard that breath in kitchens and in bedrooms and in training rings for a decade.

I had never heard it in a ceremony hall.

"I, Lukas Gray, Alpha of Ironridge, reject you, Emory Sullivan, as my mate."

The mark on my neck went cold.

Then hollow.

It was not a slow thing. It was the sound of a door closing in an empty room — one second the bond was a warm hum I had lived inside my whole adult life, and the next there was a space where the hum had been and nothing to fill it. My knees hit the dais. I heard my own breath break in the middle. Somewhere far away, someone gasped.

Lukas did not look at me.

He lifted the circlet off the cushion. He turned to Delilah — who had been standing to his right in a red gown I had not been told about — and he placed it on her head.

The hall did not move. Nobody stood. Nobody spoke.

Delilah did.

She stepped forward until her shoes were level with my knees. She looked down at me, and she laughed — a small, delighted laugh, like a child who has finally been given the toy she was told she would never have.

"Even her wolf knows she's nothing."

*Something moved.*

Not in the hall. In me. Beneath the hollow on my neck, beneath the shredded place where the bond had been — something in my bones started to hum. Low at first. Then louder. My ribs. My spine. My teeth.

Heat.

I heard a whimper leave my throat and I could not tell if it was pain or something else. My hands, spread flat on the dais, began to shake. Delilah's laugh was still in the air. Lukas had turned his back on me.

*Get up,* something said inside my skull. It was not my voice. It was rougher, older, and I did not know it.

My spine cracked.

I heard a woman scream — one of the older she-wolves in the front row. Then everything I understood about being in a body ended. My bones did not break the way the pack manual had described awakening. They tore. They lengthened. My skin split into something I did not recognize as skin. I felt the dais splinter under weight that had not been mine a heartbeat before.

When I opened my eyes, I was standing on four legs.

The hall had gone soundless.

I could see myself in the polished window along the east wall — a wolf twice the size of Delilah's copper form, twice the size of any she-wolf I had ever seen. Silver-white. My fur caught the chandelier light and threw it back, and every wolf in the front three rows had gone motionless — the involuntary stillness of lower-ranked wolves in the presence of something they had no rank to withstand.

Lukas took a step back. His face had lost its color.

Delilah's hand flew to the circlet on her head.

Nobody spoke.

*Seraphine,* the older voice said inside me. Not a question. A name. Mine.

I shifted back.

It hurt less than I expected. I stood at the center of the dais in the shredded remains of my Luna gown, bare-shouldered, trembling in every muscle — but on my feet. The cold spot on my neck pulsed like a wound. I did not touch it.

I looked at Lukas.

Not with tears. Not with fury. With the strange stripped clarity of someone who has just watched a decade of her own life catch fire and burn quickly.

"Three months," I said. My voice was quiet. It carried anyway. "I will have a new mate. I will have a new name. Within three months."

His mouth opened. Nothing came out.

I stepped down off the dais.

The rows of wolves parted for me. Nobody spoke. Nobody reached out. I walked the length of the hall in the ruined gown, past the ceremonial candles, past the pack elders who had watched me eat cold Thanksgiving leftovers alone and said nothing, past the front doors that had stayed open for the guests who never came late.

The Ironridge gates were forty yards from the hall.

I did not run. I walked. My feet knew the gravel path better than the ceremony had known its own script.

At the boundary line — the packed dirt where Ironridge ended and the tree line began — I stopped for exactly one breath.

Then I stepped across.

Behind me, in the hall I would never enter again, I heard Lukas's voice finally find itself.

"Bring her back."

Nobody moved.

I kept walking.

Somewhere in the pack house, a door opened and Delilah's laugh started up again, softer now, brittle at the edge — and underneath it, thin as a wire, the sound of her hand touching the circlet to make sure it was still there.
