Chapter 1

I was reviewing security reports in my office when the commotion started downstairs.

Voices rose from the main hall—Conrad's deep rumble, then a soft, trembling female voice I didn't recognize. I set down my pen and listened. The trembling voice said something about the Moon Goddess. About a gift. About fate.

I walked to the doorway and looked down the curved staircase.

A young woman stood in the center of the entry hall, her hands clasped in front of her chest like she was praying. She had long dark hair and wide, glistening eyes. She wore a pale blue dress that looked deliberately fragile, like something that might tear if you breathed on it too hard. Conrad stood beside her with his hand on her shoulder. Protective. Familiar.

I knew her face. Rosie Lane. Conrad's stepsister. She'd been gone for two years, studying abroad or traveling or whatever story the family had told. I'd met her once at a holiday dinner early in my time as Luna. She'd been polite. Quiet. Forgettable.

She didn't look forgettable now.

"The Moon Goddess has given me a second chance," Rosie said, her voice breaking on the last word. She pressed one hand to her heart. "A second chance mate bond. With Conrad."

The words hung in the air like smoke.

I gripped the banister. My wolf stirred inside me, a low growl building in her chest. Second chance bonds were rare. They happened when a wolf's first mate died or when a rejection left a wolf broken and alone, and the Goddess took pity. They didn't happen to women who showed up at pack houses wearing designer dresses and perfect makeup.

Conrad's hand tightened on Rosie's shoulder. He looked up and saw me standing at the top of the stairs. For a moment, something flickered across his face. Guilt, maybe. Or calculation.

Then it was gone.

"Piper," he said, his voice warm and steady. Alpha-smooth. "Come down. Rosie needs our support."

Our support.

I descended the stairs slowly. My heels clicked on the marble. Every eye in the hall turned toward me. Pack members had gathered—drawn by the noise, by the spectacle. I felt their stares like pressure against my skin.

I stopped three steps from the bottom and looked at Rosie. Her eyes were red-rimmed. Her lower lip trembled. She looked like a wounded bird.

"A second chance bond," I said evenly. "That's a serious claim."

Rosie nodded, her gaze dropping to the floor. "I know it sounds impossible. But I feel it. The pull. The connection." She looked up at Conrad, and her expression shifted into something softer. Adoring. "He's my mate."

My wolf snarled. I felt the mark on my neck—the bite Conrad had left three years ago during our mating ceremony—burn like a brand.

"Conrad is already mated," I said. My voice didn't rise. I didn't need to raise it. "To me."

Conrad stepped forward, positioning himself between Rosie and me. The gesture was subtle but deliberate. Shielding her.

"Piper, this is a family matter," he said. His tone carried that edge of Alpha authority. Not quite a command, but close. "Rosie is struggling. She needs support while we figure this out."

Figure this out.

As if a fabricated second chance bond was a scheduling conflict.

I looked past him at Rosie. She met my eyes for half a second, then looked away, her hand fluttering to her throat. The performance was flawless. Fragile. Helpless. In need of protection.

I smiled thinly. "Of course. Family is important."

Conrad relaxed. He probably thought I was conceding. Accepting.

I wasn't.

I turned and walked back up the stairs without another word. Behind me, Conrad's voice rumbled something soothing to Rosie. The pack members murmured among themselves. I didn't look back.

In my office, I locked the door and pulled out the leather-bound journal I kept in the bottom drawer of my desk. I opened it to a blank page and wrote the date at the top.

Then I wrote: *Rosie Lane. Arrived claiming second chance bond. Conrad accepted her immediately. Positioned himself between us. Called it a family matter.*

I paused, pen hovering over the paper.

Then I added: *No second chance bond exists. This is a lie.*

Over the next three days, Rosie made herself at home.

I watched her move through the pack house like she owned it. She wore Conrad's jacket draped over her shoulders at breakfast. She carried his coffee mug from the kitchen to his office, her fingers wrapped around the ceramic like she was marking territory. I saw her brush her hand along the doorframe of the Alpha suite—my suite—leaving her scent behind.

Every time I walked past that doorframe, I smelled her. Floral. Cloying. Wrong.

I mentioned it to Conrad once. We were alone in the bedroom, and I kept my voice calm. Factual.

"Rosie is scent-marking your belongings," I said. "And the Alpha suite."

Conrad didn't look up from his phone. "She's adjusting. It's a wolf instinct misfire. She's confused."

"She's not confused," I said. "She's deliberate."

He set down his phone and looked at me. His expression was patient. Condescending.

"Piper," he said slowly, like he was explaining something to a child. "Rosie has been through a trauma. Losing a mate bond—even one she never completed—leaves scars. She needs time. She needs family."

"She's claiming you as her mate," I said. "While you're already bonded to me."

His jaw tightened. The Alpha tone crept into his voice. "Enough."

The word hit me like a wall. My wolf whimpered and pressed low. The bond between us pulled tight, forcing submission.

I didn't argue. I turned and walked into the adjoining bathroom, closing the door behind me. I stood at the sink and gripped the edge of the counter until my knuckles went white.

That night, I added another entry to my journal: *Conrad used Alpha tone to silence questions about Rosie. He is protecting her. Not me.*

On the fourth day, I attended the security rotation briefing in the west wing conference room.

The Gamma, a broad-shouldered wolf named Marcus, stood at the head of the table and introduced the new Delta guard who'd been assigned to my personal detail.

"Cassius Walker," Marcus said, gesturing to the man standing near the window.

I looked up.

Cassius was tall, lean, and quiet in a way that felt deliberate. He had dark hair and sharp features, and his eyes were a pale gray that caught the light. He wore the standard Delta uniform—black tactical pants, fitted shirt, no insignia—but something about the way he stood made the uniform look like a costume.

He met my gaze and nodded once. Respectful. Professional.

Then I caught his scent.

Cedar and winter rain.

It hit me like a wave. My wolf lifted her head, ears pricked forward. The scent was rich and layered, nothing like the flat, familiar scents of the Ironvale wolves. It was… distinctive. Unusual.

I filed it away and forced my attention back to Marcus.

"Cassius will shadow you during public events and perimeter checks," Marcus said. "He's experienced. Reliable."

I nodded. "Fine."

Cassius didn't speak. He just stood there, still and watchful, while Marcus finished the briefing.

When the meeting ended, I walked past him toward the door. He fell into step two paces behind me, silent as a shadow.

I didn't look back.

But I smelled cedar and winter rain all the way down the hall.
