While My Alpha Protected His Stepsister, I Found My True Mate
Chapter 2
I was conducting the monthly east wing inspection when I found it.
The guest room at the end of the hall had been empty for weeks. I opened the door expecting dust and stale air. Instead, I was hit by a wall of scent so thick it made my stomach turn.
Conrad. And Rosie.
Their scents were tangled together, layered deep into the sheets, the pillows, the air itself. This wasn't transferred contact. This wasn't an accidental brush in the hallway. This was sustained. Intimate. Deliberate.
My wolf howled inside me. The sound tore through my chest like claws.
I stood in the doorway and stared at the rumpled bed. The sheets were twisted. One pillow had fallen to the floor. There was a faint stain on the duvet that I didn't let myself look at too closely.
I should have screamed. I should have shifted and torn the room apart.
I didn't.
I walked to the bed, stripped the sheets with steady hands, and folded them into a neat square. I set them on the dresser. Then I pulled out my phone and took three photos. The bed. The sheets. The room.
Evidence.
An Omega passed me in the hallway on my way out. She took one look at my face and pressed herself against the wall, eyes wide. I didn't say anything. I just kept walking.
Back in my office, I locked the door and opened my journal. My hand didn't shake as I wrote.
*East wing guest room. Conrad and Rosie's scents saturated the bedding. Physical affair confirmed. Sustained encounter. No ambiguity.*
I closed the journal and sat in the silence.
My wolf was still howling. I could feel the mate bond pulling tight in my chest, a constant ache that had been there for three years. The mark on my neck burned.
I touched it once. Then I stood up and walked to the Alpha suite.
Conrad was in the bedroom, changing after a perimeter run. He looked up when I entered and smiled. Easy. Warm.
"Hey," he said. "How was the inspection?"
I closed the door behind me. "I found the guest room."
His smile didn't falter. "Which one?"
"The one at the end of the east wing." I kept my voice level. Factual. "The one that smells like you and Rosie."
The smile finally dropped.
He set down the shirt he'd been holding and turned to face me fully. His expression shifted into something patient. Reasonable.
"Piper," he said slowly. "Whatever you think you smelled—"
"I know what I smelled," I said. "Your scents were layered into the sheets. Deep. Sustained. This wasn't transferred contact, Conrad. This was a physical affair."
His jaw tightened. "You're misreading the situation."
"I'm not."
"You are." His voice took on that edge. The Alpha tone creeping in. "Rosie has been struggling. I've been helping her adjust. Sometimes that means—"
"Sometimes that means what?" I interrupted. "Sleeping with her?"
His eyes flashed. "Watch your tone."
"No." I stepped forward. "I want a formal rejection. I want you to sever the mate bond."
The air in the room went still.
Conrad stared at me like I'd just spoken a foreign language. Then he laughed. Short. Disbelieving.
"You're being emotional," he said. "You're letting jealousy cloud your judgment."
"I'm being clear-headed," I said. "You've been conducting an affair with your stepsister while bonded to me. You've gaslit me for days. You've used your Alpha tone to silence me. I'm done."
His expression hardened. The Alpha tone came in full force now, pressing down on me like a weight.
"Enough," he said. The word vibrated through the bond. "You will not speak to me this way. You will not make demands. You are my Luna, and you will act like it."
My wolf whimpered and dropped low. The bond pulled tight, forcing submission. My knees wanted to buckle.
I locked them.
"Reject me," I said. My voice shook, but I didn't stop. "Or I will reject you."
Conrad's eyes went cold. He looked at me like I was a stranger.
Then he turned and walked out of the room.
I stood there in the silence, breathing hard. My wolf was still whimpering. The bond ached in my chest like a wound.
I waited for him to come back.
He didn't.
An hour later, I heard footsteps in the hallway outside the Alpha suite. Light. Feminine. Then I heard Conrad's voice, low and soothing, coming from the direction of Rosie's room.
I walked to the closet and pulled out a suitcase.
I packed in silence. Clothes. Toiletries. The leather journal from my desk drawer. I didn't take much. Just what I needed.
Then I walked down the hall to the east wing and chose a room at the far end. Small. Plain. No memories.
I set my suitcase on the bed and pulled out my phone. There was a setting in the mate bond app that allowed you to sever mind-link access. I'd never touched it before.
I touched it now.
The screen asked: *Are you sure you want to disable mind-link with Alpha Conrad Anderson?*
I tapped *Yes*.
The bond didn't break. But something shifted. The constant hum of his presence in the back of my mind—the thing I'd lived with for three years—went quiet.
I sat on the edge of the bed and waited for the grief to come.
It didn't.
I just felt… still.
The next morning, I heard the whispers before I even left my room.
Pack members murmured in the hallways. I caught fragments as I walked to the dining hall.
"—moved out—"
"—east wing—"
"—Rosie was seen—"
I pushed open the dining hall doors and the room went silent.
Every head turned toward me. I felt their stares like heat on my skin.
I walked to the coffee station, poured a cup, and sat at the far end of the table. Alone.
No one approached me.
Ten minutes later, Rosie entered the dining hall.
She wore Conrad's shirt. It hung loose on her frame, the sleeves rolled up, the hem falling to mid-thigh. She looked soft. Sleepy. Claimed.
She saw me and froze.
I looked at her over the rim of my coffee cup. I didn't smile. I didn't glare.
I just looked.
Rosie's hand fluttered to her throat. She opened her mouth like she was going to say something, then closed it again.
Then she turned and walked out.
I set down my coffee and stood.
The pack members watched me in silence as I left the hall.
In my new room, I opened my journal and wrote one final entry for the day.
*Moved to east wing. Severed mind-link. Conrad chose Rosie. The bond is dead. Now I just need to bury it.*
