After the Vows Burned Chapter 1

“Honey, let’s make a baby together so that you won’t leave me.”

I resisted, but my husband ignored it and forced himself onto me.

After that, I did it with him 520 times, each time a nightmare for me.

Even when he was on business trips, he had to monitor my every move via video, terrified that I would run away.

However, one day, I received an invitation to an art exhibition.

The intimate gestures between my husband and me had been turned into works of art, filling the entire gallery.

My husband held a young female intern by the waist, his gaze sweeping over me with indifference.

“Two years ago, you insisted on going against Tiara over an art collectible and suppressed her during the auction, spending lavishly just to humiliate her.”

“Now there are 520 art pieces here, an exhibition showcasing your disgrace. If you don’t want them falling into someone else’s hands, you’ll need to bid on them one by one.”

I stood in front of a massive nude portrait.

The painting was so realistic that anyone could immediately see that the woman in it was me.

The mocking voices around me never stopped.

“Mr. Fuller, the Jackson Group just got involved in a tax scandal a few days ago, and a grave was accidentally dug up on the land they just bought. The project was halted and their capital is running low. Raquel Jackson is so broke that she might even have to sell herself soon. She wouldn’t have the money to win the bids now, would she?”

“Exactly. With the crowd hyping it up, just this painting alone could sell for millions. Even if she wants to win the bid, she can’t afford it.”

“But if Ms. Jackson is willing to spend a night with me, I wouldn’t mind helping her win one.”

The moment he finished his sentence, the entire exhibition hall entered a state of uproar.

Countless malicious gazes fell on me, as if I were some irresistible commodity on display.

Matthew Fuller merely raised a brow at the comment, not the least bit angry.

“Not a bad idea… though it still depends on whether she is willing to accept it.

“What I can guarantee is whoever buys a painting gets the original video for free and a pair of pantyhose with her scent on it. The videos of these 520 pieces are spectacular. You won’t be disappointed.”

Several men’s eyes glowed upon hearing that.

“After what you just said, I almost wanted to buy all 520 paintings myself. Unfortunately though, the only person here who could afford that is you, Mr. Fuller… You’re not going to bid against us, are you?”

Tiara Yorks smiled. “These artworks are here for everyone to appreciate and bid on. Matthew isn’t going to buy them back, of course.”

“Today, the Fuller Group won’t participate in a single auction. Each painting will go to whoever has the ability to win the bids!”

I felt like I had fallen into an icy abyss, my entire body shivering in fear.

In my panic, I accidentally knocked over a vase on display. It shattered, and the shards cut my hand.

The noise drew everyone’s attention.

“Raquel, are you that excited to see yourself turned into artwork?” Tiara’s voice dripped with mockery; her expression was one of gloating.

“Didn’t you like winning bids? Go on and try that again today.”

Matthew shot me an indifferent look. “That vase is worth 10 million. I expect you to compensate the full amount, Ms. Jackson.”

The crowd burst into laughter again.

“Starting off with a 10 million loss… Ms. Jackson has only a little over 90 million left in her accounts. With more than five hundred paintings here, she would be lucky to buy even two.”

“Mr. Fuller really is ruthless to his wife. If he hadn’t kept the issues with that land a secret, the Jackson Group wouldn’t be on the verge of bankruptcy today. She’d still be the pampered heiress who could win every bid for these works of art.”

At those words, I froze in place.

Seconds passed.

One second. Two seconds.

I stared at Matthew in disbelief.

“So you knew from the beginning that the land the Jackson Group bought had problems? That’s why you withdrew your investment midway?”

Matthew’s lips curled up slightly, his eyes filled with disdain and a tinge of hidden hatred.

I struggled to calm my mind. My voice was hoarse.

“Why? Why would you do this to me??

“Was it really because, when we first married, I didn’t give that painting to Tiara? Is that why you’re taking revenge on me?”

Two years ago, I wanted to buy a painting for our home as newlyweds, but Tiara had deliberately bid against me, raising the price by just one dollar each time. She did it over and over, so I bought out the painting in anger.

I stood over the fresh dirt of my four-year-old son's grave. My husband, the Don of the Stark family, didn't hold my hand for comfort. He only adjusted his cuffs and checked that the diamond necklace he forced on me looked good for the cameras. "Stop crying," he whispered into my hair. "You're making a scene." Two days later, I woke up to the sound of shattering glass in the nursery. A strange boy stood there, smiling over the broken remains of my son's favorite snow globe. "This is Cody," my mother-in-law said coldly. "He's family. He stays." When I demanded he leave, Eli looked at me with dead eyes. "Material things can be replaced, Harper. The boy stays." Suspicion led me to the library door, where I heard the impossible truth. Cody wasn't a distant cousin. He was Eli's illegitimate son. And worse—while my son was drowning alone in the pool, Eli hadn't been at a business meeting. He had been in bed with his mistress. I realized then that the silver bracelet he had gifted me wasn't jewelry. I pried it open and found the blinking red light of a tracker. I was a prisoner in a cage of gold. So, I decided to die. I staged my suicide at the bridge, vanished into the night, and paid a shadow doctor to wipe my memories clean. I became Avery. I was happy. I was free. Until six months later, when a man in a black suit walked into my small-town cafe and looked at me with the eyes of a wolf. "Harper," he growled. "Come home."

I was driving through a rainstorm in upstate New York, pushing my old Volvo to the limit just to pick up a Dior gown for my wife, Catarina. She needed it for a gala tonight, where she planned to spend the evening standing next to the man she actually loved, Atticus Deleon. The truck hit me head-on, crossing the center line and sending my car rolling down an embankment in a shriek of twisted metal and shattered glass. As the steering column crushed my chest, my brain didn't see a white light; it was pried open by a digital tsunami, flooding my mind with the "Quantum Archive"-billions of data points on surgery, high-frequency trading, and combat. I woke up in the ICU with three broken ribs and a concussion, but the only thing waiting for me was a screaming voicemail from my wife's assistant. "Jorden, where the hell are you? Catarina has been waiting for thirty minutes! You are so incompetent it's actually impressive." There was no "Are you okay?" or "Are you alive?"-only fury over a ruined dress and a missing tie. While I was being resuscitated, my wife was on Instagram, singing "Endless Love" with Atticus and laughing at my "tantrum." She even called the family lawyer to freeze my credit cards, wanting to make sure I couldn't even buy a coffee without her permission. For three years, I had been the "useful husband," the doormat who apologized whenever she stepped on my toes. But the accident had overwritten my desperation with cold, hard logic, and I realized I had almost died for a woman who viewed me as a liability with a negative return on investment. When Catarina finally stormed into my hospital room to demand an apology for ruining her night, I didn't look at her with the usual puppy-dog eyes. I looked at her with ice in my veins and handed her a manila envelope I had drafted myself. "Sign the divorce papers, Ms. Evans. I'm done being your canary."
