The dawn light filtered through the heavy curtains of my father's chamber, casting long shadows across his gaunt face. Beta Ashford, once the strongest wolf in Silvermoon Pack, now lay withered against silk pillows, his breathing labored. The rare illness consuming him had stolen his vigor, leaving behind only a shell of the man who had raised me. "Victoria," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "Come closer, daughter." I knelt beside his bed, taking his frail hand in mine. His skin felt like parchment, thin and cool to the touch. "Father, please rest. The healer said—" "The healer cannot save me." His amber eyes, though clouded with pain, fixed on mine with startling clarity. "My time grows short, Victoria. Before I join the Moon Goddess, I must see you secured." My chest tightened.

After Rejection, My Mate Became My Redemption Chapter 1

The dawn light filtered through the heavy curtains of my father's chamber, casting long shadows across his gaunt face. Beta Ashford, once the strongest wolf in Silvermoon Pack, now lay withered against silk pillows, his breathing labored. The rare illness consuming him had stolen his vigor, leaving behind only a shell of the man who had raised me.

"Victoria," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "Come closer, daughter."

I knelt beside his bed, taking his frail hand in mine. His skin felt like parchment, thin and cool to the touch.

"Father, please rest. The healer said—"

"The healer cannot save me." His amber eyes, though clouded with pain, fixed on mine with startling clarity. "My time grows short, Victoria. Before I join the Moon Goddess, I must see you secured."

My chest tightened. We'd had this conversation before, but never with such urgency.

"I need to see you mated and marked, daughter. Promise me you'll find your bond before..." A coughing fit seized him, his body convulsing with each harsh breath.

I squeezed his hand gently, fighting back tears. "Father, please don't worry about me. I'll be fine."

"Promise me," he insisted, gripping my hand with surprising strength. "A lone she-wolf without protection... I cannot leave this world until I know you're safe."

The weight of his plea settled on my shoulders like a physical burden. "I promise, Father."

Relief softened his features as he sank back into the pillows. "Good. The Sterling boy has always favored you. Or perhaps Wellington or Blackwood. Any would make a worthy mate."

I nodded, though my stomach twisted with uncertainty. Ryan, Marcus, and James—my childhood friends, all future Alphas. Any would be a suitable match in my father's eyes. And perhaps in mine, once.

Especially Ryan.

---

The training grounds of Crescent Ridge Pack buzzed with activity as warriors sparred under the late morning sun. I spotted Ryan immediately, his broad shoulders and confident stance unmistakable as he demonstrated combat techniques to younger wolves.

My wolf stirred within me, recognizing something I'd long suspected. The faint vanilla and cedar scent that had always drawn me to him intensified as I approached. Mate scent. I was certain now.

Ryan dismissed his students when he saw me, his expression unreadable. "Victoria. This is unexpected."

"I need to speak with you." My voice sounded steadier than I felt. "Privately."

He led me to a secluded corner of the grounds, away from curious eyes. The privacy should have comforted me, but something in his rigid posture set my nerves on edge.

"My father is dying," I began, the words catching in my throat. "His last wish is to see me mated."

Ryan's jaw tightened. "Victoria—"

"I believe you're my fated mate, Ryan." The confession tumbled out. "I've felt it for years, and now I'm certain. The scent—"

"Stop." His voice cut through mine like a blade. "I know what you're going to say, and I can't let you continue."

Confusion washed over me. "What?"

Ryan straightened, his face hardening into a mask of Alpha authority. "I, Ryan Sterling, Alpha of Crescent Ridge Pack, reject you, Victoria Ashford, as my mate."

The formal words slammed into me with physical force. My wolf howled in agony as his Alpha aura expanded, pressing down on me with crushing weight.

"Ryan, please," I gasped, struggling to remain standing as my knees threatened to buckle.

"The rejection is final." His eyes, once warm when they looked at me, now held nothing but cold detachment. "I've made my choice, Victoria. And it isn't you."

I stumbled backward, the pain of rejection tearing through my chest like claws. My wolf curled into herself, whimpering. One rejection was devastating enough, but I had two more potential mates to approach. For my father's sake, I had to try.

---

By afternoon, I stood trembling at the edge of Ironwood Pack's war-simulation field. Marcus Wellington's rejection had been no less brutal than Ryan's, his Alpha aura forcing me to my knees as he spoke the ritual words with cruel finality.

And now, as twilight descended, I faced James Blackwood atop Shadowpine's ridge, desperation making me reckless.

"Please, James. We've known each other since we were pups. I thought perhaps—"

"You thought wrong." His voice carried on the wind, sharp and dismissive. "I, James Blackwood, Alpha of Shadowpine Pack, reject you, Victoria Ashford, as my mate."

His Alpha aura crashed over me like a physical blow, driving the breath from my lungs. Three rejections in one day. My wolf lay broken within me, her spirit shattered.

I stumbled back toward Silvermoon territory, numb with grief and humiliation. The courtyard was quiet as I entered, most pack members already retired to their homes. A movement caught my eye—Ryan, standing in the shadows near the Omega quarters.

He wasn't alone.

I watched, frozen, as he pressed something into Isabella Cruz's palm—a small token wrapped in silk. The mate-scent token, meant to help a chosen mate recognize their partner's unique scent. Isabella's fingers closed around it, her lips curving into a triumphant smile.

The girl I had protected from Omega persecution, whom I had helped rise above her station, had taken the one thing I truly wanted. My father's friend. My childhood companion. My fated mate.

As Isabella leaned up to press her lips against Ryan's, my broken wolf gave one final, agonized howl before retreating deep within me, leaving nothing but hollow emptiness in her wake.

Seven years. Seven long years since I'd last set foot in New York City. The skyline stretched before me, a glittering canvas of ambition and betrayal. I stood on the balcony of our Manhattan penthouse, the cool evening air caressing my skin. My fingers absently traced the platinum band on my left hand—a habit I'd developed whenever the past threatened to overwhelm me. "You're thinking about them, aren't you?" I didn't need to turn to know Leonardo had joined me. His presence was like a physical force, powerful and reassuring. The mate bond between us hummed with his concern. "They're just ghosts, Violet," he said, his arms encircling me from behind. His chin rested on my shoulder, his breath warm against my neck.

I tapped my pencil against the edge of my sketchpad, staring at the half-finished design for the ceremonial necklace I planned to surprise Marcus with for our fifth anniversary. The silver and moonstone piece would symbolize our enduring bond—five perfect years as Alpha and Luna of the Silverstone Pack. "What do you think, Lyra?" I whispered to my wolf, who purred contentedly in my mind. *Beautiful, like all your creations, Victoria.* My inner wolf had always been my greatest supporter, even before Marcus. I smiled, setting down my pencil and stretching my arms above my head. The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of our shared study, casting a warm glow over the polished oak desk. Marcus had left his tablet behind this morning in his rush to handle what he'd called an "urgent pack matter." I reached for it, thinking I could review some of the anniversary celebration plans we'd been discussing. We'd granted each other access to our devices years ago—a symbol of trust between mates. The screen lit up at my touch, revealing a messaging app I rarely used. A notification blinked insistently in the corner—from Amber Rodriguez, our new pack coordinator.

“Don’t stop,” she whispered. “She won’t come up.” I did. I stopped breathing. Thinking. Existing. The voice came from inside my bedroom—our bedroom. My sanctuary. I stood frozen in the hallway, dinner still warm downstairs, candles flickering in a room that no longer mattered. The scent of truffle butter still clung to my sleeves. Through the door—left carelessly ajar—I saw enough. A woman with auburn hair and wine-colored nails was curled into my husband's side, her lipstick smeared across his throat like a bruise. Her fingers skimmed down his back, possessive, practiced. Oliver moaned softly. A sound I hadn’t heard in months. I didn’t scream. I didn’t cry. I turned. Through the adjoining bathroom, I slipped into the walk-in closet, hiding behind the luxury he insisted I needed. Dresses lined in neat rows. Shoes in pyramids. A fortress of silk and leather and betrayal. I sat down, gripping the hem of my dress, listening. “I don’t know why you’re still stalling,” Lily said, her voice languid and confident. “She’s not stupid, Oliver. She’s suspicious. You said she keeps asking questions.” He sighed. “Let her ask. She won’t do anything. Not until it’s too late.” A beat. “She’s planning something tonight,” he added, almost amused. “Made some kind of fancy dinner. Probably filet again. It’s sweet, in a tragic way.” Lily giggled. “You think she’s figured out we’ve been using her?” “Scarlett sees what she wants to see. She’s desperate. That’s what makes it easy.” There was movement on the bed. Sheets shifting. “She still has no idea about the inheritance?” Lily murmured. “None,” he said. “Her father’s trust releases next month. Once the money hits the accounts, I’ll serve the papers. I’ve already started moving things offshore.” My throat closed. I bit the inside of my cheek so hard I tasted blood. So this was what I got from our five-year marriage.
