Chapter 2

The highway was black and empty.

Snow slammed against the windshield in thick, blinding sheets. The wipers swept back and forth with a dull, rhythmic squeak, barely keeping up. I gripped the steering wheel so tight my knuckles turned white.

My headlights only cut a few feet into the dark. Beyond that, there was nothing. Just white static and freezing air.

Around two in the morning, I pulled off at a small gas station somewhere in the mountains. I didn't get out to buy coffee. I didn't pump gas. I just sat in the idling car under the buzz of a yellow security light. The dashboard clock clicked softly. I stayed there for ten minutes, watching my breath fog up the side glass. My coat was still damp from the slush Declan shoved me into.

*You were useful for getting me started, Vivienne. But that chapter is closed.*

His voice echoed in my skull, flat and cruel.

I put both hands back on the wheel, shifted into drive, and pulled back onto the icy road.

I reached my hometown in Kentucky an hour before dawn.

The streets were dead quiet. Old brick storefronts sat dark under a blanket of fresh snow. I knew every corner of this town. My father had bought feed at the mill down by the creek. My mother had taught Sunday school at the chapel where Declan and I stood at the altar. I sold all of it for him. Every single acre.

I parked my beat-up car across from the town hall. The building was pitch black. I got out, walked up the stone stairs, and sat down on the top step. The concrete was freezing against my jeans. Snow settled on my coat and dusted my dark hair, but I didn't move. I just watched the eastern sky turn from ink to pale, bruised gray.

At seven o'clock, a blue pickup truck pulled into the small lot.

The door opened, and Mayor Cooper stepped out. He was a tall, thick-shouldered man in a brown canvas coat. He started up the walkway, his boots crunching in the snow, then stopped dead when he saw me.

"Vivienne?" he said, squinting. "Vivienne Castro?"

I stood up. My knees were stiff from the cold. "Good morning, Mayor Cooper."

He hurried up the steps. His eyes took in my red nose, the snow on my shoulders, and the hollow look on my face. He didn't ask foolish questions. He didn't ask where Declan was. He just grabbed my elbow with a warm, steady hand.

"Come inside, child," he said softly. "Come out of the cold."

He unlocked the heavy wooden door and guided me down the polished hallway into his office. The room smelled like old radiator steam, paper, and wood polish. He flipped the lights on, pulled a wooden chair close to the humming heater, and pushed me gently into the seat.

Then he reached into a glass jar on his desk and pulled out a round peppermint candy wrapped in clear plastic. He pressed it into my palm and closed my fingers over it.

"Warm up first," he said.

"I don't have time," I said. My voice was raspy from the long drive, but steady. "Declan told me our marriage was fake. He said he never filed the paperwork at the courthouse. He said it holds no legal weight."

Mayor Cooper went dead still. His bushy gray eyebrows drew together. A hard, quiet fury tightened the corners of his mouth.

"Did he?" Cooper asked, his voice dangerously calm.

"He's marrying his commander's daughter," I said. "He told me I'm not his wife."

Mayor Cooper didn't wait for me to finish the sentence. He picked up his desk phone, jabbed three numbers, and held the receiver to his ear.

"Martha," he said without greeting. "Open the records room right now. Bring the county marriage register for three years back. I'm coming down."

He slammed the phone onto the cradle. "Let's go, Vivienne."

We walked downstairs into the basement annex where the county kept its old files. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead. Martha, the county clerk, was already pulling a heavy leather-bound ledger from the metal shelf.

Mayor Cooper took the book from her hands and laid it flat on the counter. His thick fingers flipped through the yellowed pages. He stopped near the back.

He leaned down, scanning the handwritten lines. Then he tapped a square of paper taped neatly into the center of the page.

"Look here," Cooper said.

I stepped up beside him. My heart hammered against my ribs.

There it was. The official Commonwealth of Kentucky marriage certificate. My name was on the left, spelled out in my mother's neat cursive. Declan's name was on the right. Below both of our signatures was the gold state seal, pressed deep into the paper, alongside the clerk's original recording stamp.

"Declan didn't file it," Mayor Cooper said quietly. "Your father did. Jared came straight here the Monday after your wedding, paid the ten-dollar fee, and watched them log it into the books. Your father was a thorough man."

A lump rose in my throat, hot and sharp. My dad had protected me even from beyond the grave.

Mayor Cooper took a fresh sheet of official stock, lined it up, and ran a certified copy through the scanner. When the warm paper slid out of the tray, he took a heavy steel embosser from the counter.

He set it over the bottom corner of the document and brought his hand down with a heavy, deliberate *thud*.

The metal jaws bit into the paper, leaving the raised seal of the court crisp and clean.

Mayor Cooper picked up the document. He blew lightly across the fresh ink, then held it out with both hands. He didn't hand it to me like a piece of paper. He handed it to me like a weapon.

"Take this," he said, his eyes fierce and steady. "This is real. And it always was."

I took the certificate. The raised seal was rough against my cold fingertips.

"Thank you," I said.

I folded the paper carefully, slid it into the inside pocket of my coat right over my heart, and zipped it tight.

I turned around and walked out into the morning light.
