Chapter 3

The drive back to Fort Bragg took six hours.

The snow had stopped by the time I crossed the state line, leaving behind a sky as gray and hard as concrete. My eyes burned from lack of sleep. My mouth tasted like stale coffee and the sugar from Mayor Cooper’s peppermint candy. But beneath the exhaustion, my mind was sharp. The fuzziness that had clouded my head for two years was completely gone.

I drove through the main gate of the base just past noon. The guard checked my dependent ID, barely glancing at my face before waving me through. He didn't know that on paper, Declan had erased me. He didn't know I was supposed to be a ghost.

I didn't head back to the officers' quarters. I didn't want to see Declan’s neat rows of shirts or his polished boots by the door.

Instead, I turned down a side road and parked in front of a squat, red-brick building. The sign by the walkway read: *Criminal Investigation Division.*

I cut the ignition. The engine sputtered, then died.

I sat there in the silence, listening to the tick-tick of the cooling metal. Through the windshield, the CID building looked cold and imposing. It was part of the machine Declan had worshipped, the machine he had sold me out to climb.

Inside my coat, the thick manila envelope pressed against my ribs. I reached in and touched the stiff cardboard. The raised seal of the Kentucky court was an outline I could feel through the paper.

I took one slow, deep breath. Then I opened the car door and stepped out into the freezing air.

I walked up the concrete steps. I didn't hesitate at the entrance. I put both hands flat against the heavy metal push-bars and shoved the double doors open.

The hallway was sterile and warm. It smelled of industrial floor wax and stale black coffee. A sergeant at the front desk looked up from his computer, took my name, and told me to wait. Five minutes later, an investigator came out and led me into a small, windowless office.

A nameplate on the metal desk read: *Special Agent Marcus Sterling.*

Sterling was in his late thirties. He had short-cropped brown hair, tired eyes, and a neat Army uniform with rolled-up sleeves. He sat behind the desk and motioned to a bare metal chair across from him.

"Mrs. Grant?" he said, checking a notepad. "The sergeant said you have a matter to report regarding Staff Officer Declan Grant."

"Yes," I said.

My voice was quiet, but it didn't shake.

I sat down. I unbuttoned my coat and pulled out the manila envelope. I wound the string off the red paper button and opened the flap.

In complete silence, I laid three items on his desk.

First, the certified marriage certificate from Kentucky, stamped with the fresh, raised seal from Mayor Cooper’s embosser.

Second, the damp copy of the joint married-housing application, showing Declan’s signature neatly looped next to Lorelei Hoffman’s.

Third, three handwritten pages of my own personal statement. I had written out every date, every lie, and every detail of how he called me his cousin while living as my husband.

My fingers trembled just a little as I smoothed the edges of the papers flat against the wood. I couldn't stop that. But when I looked up and met Sterling’s gaze, my eyes were stone.

"I am here to file a formal complaint against Captain Declan Grant," I said. Every word came out distinct and clear. "For bigamy. For fraud against the United States Army. And for conduct unbecoming an officer under the Uniform Code of Military Justice."

Sterling didn't move for a few seconds. His eyes shifted from my face down to the papers.

Slowly, he reached forward. He picked up the marriage certificate first. He held it up to the fluorescent light, inspecting the date, the registrar's stamp, and the gold seal. Then he ran the pad of his thumb over the raised lettering.

Next, he picked up the housing application. His eyebrows pulled together when he saw the second name on the form.

*Lorelei Hoffman.*

He set the document down very carefully. He folded his hands on top of the desk, leaning forward slightly. The room felt smaller, the hum of the overhead lights suddenly loud.

"Mrs. Grant," Sterling said. His voice was low and serious. "Do you know who Colonel Hoffman is?"

"He's Declan’s battalion commander," I replied without blinking. "And Lorelei is his daughter."

"Then you understand what this means," Sterling said. He wasn't being cruel. His voice was steady, almost protective, but heavy with reality. "Colonel Hoffman is one of the most connected men on this installation. Declan Grant is his golden boy. If I log these papers into the official system, you won't just be going after your husband. You’ll be pulling the pin on a grenade inside the Hoffman family."

I didn't flinch.

"They will close ranks," Sterling continued, watching every micro-expression on my face. "There will be institutional pressure. People will question your character. They will dig into your past. They will try to make you go away quietly."

He paused, letting the weight of the warning settle in the room. He pointed a finger at the three documents between us.

"I am asking you plainly," Sterling said. "Are you sure you want to open this door? Because once I take this statement, you can't close it."

Under the table, my thumb brushed against the rough inner seam of my jeans, anchoring me. I thought of my parents’ farm, sold off for Declan’s dreams. I thought of the gray scarf around Lorelei’s neck. I thought of Declan shoving me down onto the black ice and walking away without looking back.

I looked Marcus Sterling straight in the eye.

"I understand," I said.

I didn't reach for the documents. I left them resting firmly on his desk, right where they belonged.

"Log it."
