Chapter 1

The afternoon sky over Fort Bragg was the color of dirty slush.

I was in Declan’s small office on base, stacking his freshly ironed dress shirts. Two years ago, I sold my late parents’ farm in Kentucky to fund his career. We moved here, and he tucked me away in a tiny corner of his life. He told everyone I was his "distant cousin from back home." He said military politics were delicate, and promotions required careful planning. I had believed him. I loved him enough to believe anything.

As I reached to straighten a row of binders on his desk, my elbow caught a glass of water. It tipped over. Water pooled across his blotter, soaking into a neat pile of official folders.

"Damn it," I whispered, grabbing a cloth from my cleaning kit.

I lifted the folders to dry the wood. A loose document slid free from the bottom. I picked it up to wipe it, but the bold black heading caught my eye: *Base Housing Department – Joint Married-Housing Application.*

My eyes dropped to the lines below.

*Applicant One: Captain Declan Grant.*

*Applicant Two: Lorelei Hoffman.*

My breath stopped. Lorelei Hoffman was the daughter of Colonel Hoffman, the most powerful man in the battalion.

I smoothed the damp paper flat on the desk. My hands didn't shake. I read every single line twice. His signature was at the bottom, inked with the heavy black pen I bought him for his birthday.

Carefully, precisely, I slid the paper back into the exact spot where I found it.

That evening, the first flakes of December snow began to fall.

Declan came home, showered, and changed into civilian clothes. He wrapped the gray wool scarf around his neck—the one I had spent three weeks knitting for him by hand, stitch by stitch.

"I have a late meeting with the command staff," he told me without meeting my eyes. "Don't wait up."

"Okay," I said quietly.

He didn't notice the strange tone in my voice. He grabbed his keys and left.

I waited two minutes. Then I pulled on my heavy coat and stepped out into the freezing night.

I followed him at a distance across the snow-dusted grounds. The wind bit my cheeks, but I barely felt it. Declan walked briskly toward the officers' recreation building. Under the yellow glow of a streetlamp, a woman was waiting.

It was Lorelei. She wore a tailored white wool coat and black leather boots.

Declan reached her, and his entire posture changed. He gave her a warm, easy smile—the kind of smile he hadn't given me in over a year. Then he reached up, unwrapped my handmade scarf from his neck, and looped it tenderly around hers. He pulled her close against his chest and kissed her forehead.

A sharp, violent pain tore through my ribs. Two years of sacrifice, of staying hidden, of playing the quiet cousin. All of it burned to ash in an instant.

I walked straight out of the dark.

"Declan."

His head snapped up. His face went dead white, then twisted into instant, ugly rage. He murmured something to Lorelei, stepped away from her, and marched toward me. Before I could speak, his fingers clamped around my upper arm like iron. He hauled me roughly behind the brick corner of the building, out of her sight.

"What the hell are you doing here?" he hissed, his grip tightening enough to bruise. "Have you lost your mind?"

"I saw the housing application," I said. My voice was flat, hollow. "With Lorelei. Declan, I’m your wife."

Declan let out a short, mocking laugh. His eyes were completely cold.

"Wife?" he sneered, leaning close. "You actually think that little church wedding back in Kentucky meant anything? I never filed those papers at the courthouse, Vivienne. It wasn't legally binding. You’re not my wife."

The world tilted under my boots. "You lied to me."

"I did what I had to do," he snapped with chilling calm. "Marrying Lorelei makes me Deputy Battalion Commander. It secures my future. What do you give me? A dead farm in Kentucky? You were useful for getting me started, Vivienne. But that chapter is closed. Stop embarrassing yourself."

I stared at him, unable to recognize the man I had given my life to. "How could you be this cruel?"

"Go back to the quarters and pack your things," he said.

Then he shoved me.

My heel caught on a patch of black ice, and I fell hard into the slush. The freezing wetness soaked straight through my jeans.

Declan didn't look down at me. He smoothed the lapels of his coat, turned around, and walked back under the streetlamp to Lorelei. Lorelei looked over his shoulder at me, a small, condescending smile curling her red lips.

I pushed myself up from the ground. I didn't scream. I didn't cry.

I walked back to the quarters alone through the falling snow.

Inside the small, dark bedroom, I sat down on the edge of the mattress. I didn't take off my coat. The silence in the room was heavy, pressing against my ears. For a long time, I just stared at the blank wall, feeling the cold slush melt against my skin.

Then, something inside me shifted. It wasn't sadness anymore. It was stone.

I stood up, pulled my battered leather duffel bag from the closet, and set it on the bed. Methodically, I packed my clothes, my passport, and my purse.

Before I left, I paused by the window and looked out at the silent, gray storm blanketing the base.

I pulled the zipper shut.
