Chapter 2

The announcement went out at 10:15 a.m.

I was in the Silverpine guest suite when Rowan knocked—three precise raps—and told me the formal bonding contract communiqué had been transmitted to every allied pack within Council jurisdiction. Including Ironclaw.

"Drake will have his copy by now," Rowan said. His tone was neutral, but his eyes held something that might have been sympathy if Lycan warriors did sympathy. "Beta Commander Brandon received it directly."

I nodded. "Thank you."

He left. I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at my hands. They were steady. The hollow mark on my neck was still cold, but the worst of the soul-deep ache had dulled to something I could breathe through. My wolf was quiet again—exhausted, maybe. Or waiting.

I wondered if Drake's hands were steady when he read it.

I told myself I didn't care.

I was lying.

---

Drake arrived at the Blood Crescent border just after noon.

I got the alert from patrol—unauthorized Ironclaw Alpha crossing into Blood Crescent territory, bypassing the formal entry protocols, heading directly for the packhouse. Leland's guards let him through. Of course they did. You didn't stop an Alpha in full stride unless you wanted a territorial incident.

I met him in the outer meeting room. The one with no windows and no tea service and chairs that weren't meant to be comfortable. I didn't sit. Neither did he.

He looked—wrong. His aura, which had always filled a room like weather, flickered at the edges. His wolf was too close to the surface, pressing against his human form in a way that made his jaw tight and his hands curl into fists at his sides. The scent of him—pine and leather and Alpha dominance—was undercut by something sharper. Desperation, maybe. Or panic.

"You can't do this," he said.

I waited.

"Leighton." His voice cracked on my name. He stepped closer. I didn't move. "You signed a contract with the Lycan Prince. You—you didn't even wait. You walked out of that ceremony and went straight to him."

"Yes," I said.

"Why?"

I looked at him. Really looked. At the man I had chased for six years. At the Alpha who had let me chase him because it fed his ego and cost him nothing. At the mate who had rejected me in front of three hundred witnesses and expected me to what—wait around?

"You rejected me before your pack," I said quietly. "I owe you nothing."

His wolf surfaced—just for a second, gold bleeding into his irises—and he reached for the bond. I felt it. The desperate, clawing pull of an Alpha trying to find the warmth that used to live in the space between us.

He found nothing.

The bond was dead. Severed. Cold as winter stone.

A sound escaped him—low, broken, involuntary. His wolf whimpering. I had never heard Drake's wolf make that sound. I don't think he had either.

His hands opened and closed at his sides. "Leighton, please—"

"No," I said.

I turned and walked out. Left him standing there. My heels clicked on the stone floor—steady, even, the same rhythm as the night I walked out of his birthday celebration. I didn't look back.

Behind me, I heard him exhale—a ragged, shaking breath that might have been the beginning of something else. I kept walking.

The door closed between us.

---

Leland summoned me two hours later.

His war table was exactly as I remembered: territorial maps spread across dark wood, pack boundary lines marked in red ink, no personal photographs anywhere in sight. He sat at the head. I took the chair across from him without being invited.

"You've created a problem," he said.

I waited.

"The Ironclaw rejection cost us a critical alliance. The eastern border trade routes. The hunting rights we negotiated through the Calloway family." He tapped the map with one finger. "I've spent thirty years building this pack's influence, Leighton. You don't get to destabilize it because your feelings were hurt."

My feelings were hurt.

I almost laughed. I didn't.

"I'm invoking pack law," Leland continued. His voice was measured. Reasonable. The tone of a man who genuinely believed he was being fair. "Your mating contract with the Lycan Prince falls under Blood Crescent dynastic authority. I'm claiming territory shares through the alliance. Alpha precedent. It's standard."

I looked at him. At my grandfather. At the man who had treated me like a chess piece my entire life and called it love.

"The contract is filed under Lycan Council jurisdiction," I said quietly. "Not Blood Crescent pack law."

His expression didn't change. But his eyes sharpened.

"Any territorial claim," I continued, "will be adjudicated by Lycan authority. Not you."

Silence.

I watched the recalculation move behind his eyes. Watched him realize that I had outmaneuvered him before he even knew there was a game.

"You can file a petition with the Council if you'd like," I added. "I'm sure they'll give it all the consideration it deserves."

I stood. He didn't stop me.

I walked to the door, and just before I left, I looked back.

"I'm not your asset anymore, Grandfather," I said. "I'm done being manageable."

I closed the door on whatever expression crossed his face.

Outside, the air was cold and clean. My wolf stirred—just barely, a faint pulse of something that might have been approval.

I drove back to Silverpine as the sun started to set. The forest thickened on either side of the highway, and somewhere behind me, Drake was probably still standing in that empty meeting room, reaching for a bond that would never answer.

I didn't feel sorry for him.

I felt free.
