Chapter 2

The week after Rusty disappeared, Braxton started using the bond like a remote control.

"Stay in this room until I return."

I was halfway to the door when the command locked my legs mid-step. My body stopped. My mind kept going, slamming against the inside of my skull while my feet stayed glued to the carpet. He left without looking back. The door clicked shut. I stood there for three hours, muscles screaming, until he came back and released me with a wave of his hand like I was a dog he'd told to sit.

He didn't apologize. He asked if I'd finished the quarterly supply audit.

I had. I always did.

Two days later: "Do not contact the Silverfang envoy without my presence."

I'd been drafting the follow-up on the treaty terms I'd negotiated six months ago. My fingers froze over the keyboard. The bond wrapped around my throat like a fist. I closed the laptop. Filed the draft in my personal folder instead. Added a timestamp and a note: *Alpha override, day 3 post-Trial One.*

Then: "Smile when Elle is in the room."

That one made my wolf snarl once, sharp and desperate, before she went quiet again. The bond forced my mouth into the shape of something pleasant while Elle walked past me wearing his scent like perfume. My face ached for hours afterward.

Each command was small. Precise. The kind of thing that wouldn't show up in a formal complaint because it sounded reasonable when you said it out loud. *Stay put. Don't overstep. Be polite.* But strung together, day after day, they were a slow suffocation. My wolf, who had finally woken up enough to bare her teeth during the banquet, fell back into silence under the weight of it. I felt her retreat deeper, curling into a place I couldn't reach.

I obeyed every single command. I had no choice. My body answered to the bond before my brain could even process the words.

But the moment each command released, I went back to my encrypted drive and added another layer of documentation. Timestamps. Exact wording. Witness names when there were any. I was building something, though I didn't have a name for it yet. A record. Proof. Evidence of a decade I had survived and a week I would not.

On the fourth day, I scheduled a meeting with Beta Marcus.

He looked surprised when I walked into his office. I didn't usually ask for his time directly. Most of my coordination with him went through Braxton or the pack council. I closed the door behind me and set a folder on his desk.

"I need to review the eastern border patrol logs," I said.

He opened the folder. Scanned the first page. His shoulders relaxed slightly. Standard administrative work. Safe territory.

I waited until he was halfway through the second page. Then I slid the copied memo across the table. Elle's handwriting. *Trial One: public submission test (complete). Trial Two: isolate the emotional anchor.*

Marcus went very still. His eyes moved over the words slowly, like he was reading a language he didn't want to understand. When he looked up, his face was tight.

"You weren't supposed to see this," he said quietly.

I didn't blink. "I need to know if there is a third test planned. Not for my sake. For the record."

The silence stretched between us like a wire pulled taut. Marcus set the memo down carefully, as though it might detonate. He looked at me with something that was close to shame.

"The cellar," he said.

My expression did not change. My hands stayed folded in my lap. My wolf stayed silent. But something deep in my chest—something I had been holding onto without realizing it—let go.

I took the memo back. Folded it into perfect corners. Slipped it into my jacket pocket.

"Thank you for your time, Beta," I said.

I left before he could say anything else.

That night, Elle sat in the Luna's chair at dinner. Again. She'd been doing it all week, but tonight she went further. She addressed the pack directly, talking about the new pup training rotation and the upcoming meal schedules like she was already running domestic operations. Several lower-ranked wolves turned to her instead of me when they had questions. One of the Omegas called her "Luna" by accident, then flushed and looked at me.

I smiled. The bond wasn't forcing it this time. I just smiled, nodded, and finished my meal at the far end of the table.

Later, I updated the official records. Every administrative achievement from the past month—trade route negotiations, patrol optimizations, alliance maintenance—I credited to "pack council effort" instead of my own name. Let the archive show collaboration. Let it show I had never needed the title to do the work.

Let it show I could walk away and the work would still be mine.

Braxton found me in my quarters after midnight. He didn't knock. He never did anymore.

"You're punishing me," he said.

I looked up from my laptop. Waited.

"This coldness. This distance. You're trying to make me feel guilty." His voice was tight, frustrated. "If you truly loved me, you would trust my process. These tests—they're proof I take our bond seriously. An Alpha has to be certain of his Luna."

I listened to the entire speech. I didn't interrupt. I didn't argue. When he finally stopped talking, I asked one question.

"Did you authorize the release of my dog into rogue territory?"

The pause was one second too long.

"It was a necessary test of your resilience," he said.

I looked at him for a long moment. The incomplete mark on my neck was cold. Quiet. Like a door that had been open for ten years and had finally, silently, swung shut.

"I see," I said.

I turned back to my laptop. He stood there, waiting for more. When I didn't give it to him, he slammed the door on his way out.

The mark pulsed once—cold, then nothing.

I saved my work. Backed it up to the drive. Then I pulled up a map of unclaimed territories and stared at the coordinates I'd logged three nights ago, the ones just past the northern border where the road gave out and the trees turned wild.

I didn't cross that night either.

But I knew, with a certainty that was clean and sharp and final, that I would.
