Chapter 3

Elle found me in the records hall the next afternoon.

She smiled, warm and bright, like we were old friends who hadn't seen each other in years. "Sloan, hey—Braxton's looking for you. He wanted to talk privately. Down in the old compound storage wing."

I looked at her. Her voice was light. Her eyes were steady. She wore his scent again, faint but unmistakable, like she'd brushed against him in passing.

"He asked for me specifically?" I said.

"Yes." She tilted her head. "He said it was important. Something about the alliance paperwork."

I closed the file I'd been reading. Logged out of the system. Picked up my tablet. "Thank you," I said.

She walked with me partway, chatting about the new meal rotation and how well the pup training was going under her oversight. I listened. I nodded in the right places. When we reached the stairwell that led down to the old wing, she stopped.

"I'll leave you to it," she said. "Good luck."

I descended alone.

The old compound storage wing hadn't been used in years. The lights were dim, flickering in places where the wiring had never been updated. The air smelled like concrete dust and rust. At the end of the hall, a single door stood slightly ajar. I pushed it open.

The room was small. Stone walls. A drain in the center of the floor. No windows. I stepped inside, scanning for Braxton, and the door slammed shut behind me.

The lock clicked.

I turned fast, reaching for the handle, and the bond snapped tight around my entire body like a vice.

*Do not move. Do not shift. Do not call for help.*

My muscles locked. My legs froze mid-step. My hand stayed outstretched toward the door, fingers curled but unable to close the distance. The command was absolute. Pre-set. Triggered remotely. I could feel Braxton's will pressing down through the bond like a hand on the back of my neck, forcing me still.

The lights went out.

The darkness was instant. Complete. The kind of black that swallows sound and makes your own breath feel foreign. I tried to move. My body would not obey. I tried to shift. My wolf whimpered once—small, desperate—and then the whimper turned into something else.

A child's scream. High and thin and terrified.

I was six years old again. My rogue father's boots were climbing the basement stairs. The door was closing. The lock was clicking. The silence that came after meant no one was coming. No one ever came.

My wolf screamed inside me, clawing at the walls of my mind, and I could not move to comfort her. Could not speak. Could not shift. The bond held me frozen in the center of the room while my skin began to burn.

Silver lining. The walls were laced with it. I could smell it now, acrid and metallic, and wherever my exposed skin came close to the stone, it blistered. My wrist. The side of my neck. My wolf's screaming turned frantic, then hoarse, then silent.

I do not know how long I stood there. Time stopped meaning anything. There was only the dark and the burn and the command that would not release and the memory of being six years old and forgotten.

Eventually, my wolf stopped struggling. She curled into a place so deep I could not reach her. The silence inside me was worse than the screaming.

I stopped counting my breaths. I stopped thinking in words. I became very still.

When the door finally opened, light spilled in like a knife. I did not flinch. I did not blink.

Beta Marcus stood in the doorway, his face pale and tight. He looked at me—standing in the center of the room, perfectly upright, eyes open and dry and looking at nothing—and something in his expression cracked.

"Sloan," he said. His voice was rough. "I'm getting you out."

The bond released. My muscles unlocked all at once. I did not stumble. I walked forward, stepped over the threshold, and stopped in the hallway.

"Thank you, Beta," I said.

My voice was flat. Calm. Like I was thanking him for holding a door.

Marcus reached for my arm. I stepped back, not fast, just out of range. He dropped his hand.

"Sloan, I—"

"I need to speak with the Alpha," I said. "Is he in his office?"

Marcus stared at me. "Yes. But you should—"

"Thank you," I said again.

I walked past him. Up the stairs. Through the compound hallways. My steps were even. My hands were steady. Several wolves turned to look at me as I passed. I did not look back.

Braxton's office door was closed. I did not knock. I opened it and walked in.

He was sitting at his desk, reviewing alliance documents. He looked up, startled, then his expression shifted into something cautious. Wary.

"Sloan," he said. "I didn't expect—"

I crossed to his desk. Set the encrypted drive on the corner without comment. Then I pulled a single sheet of paper from my jacket pocket—handwritten, formal, with precise legal language I had memorized from a decade of drafting pack treaties—and slid it into the stack between two territorial agreements.

"It's in the stack," I said. "Third from the top."

I turned and walked toward the door.

"Sloan, wait—"

I did not wait. I closed the door behind me and kept walking.

My mark was cold. Quiet. Like a scar that had finally stopped bleeding.

I went to my quarters. Packed a single bag. My laptop. The encrypted drive backup. The journal he had read aloud to humiliate me. Three changes of clothes. Nothing else.

I did not cry. I did not shake. I moved through the motions with a precision that felt like someone else's muscle memory.

When I was finished, I sat on the edge of the bed and waited for dawn.

My wolf was silent. Somewhere far away, deeper than I could reach, she was still curled in that dark place. I did not try to call her back.

I just waited.

At first light, I picked up my bag, walked to my car, and drove north until the paved road gave out and the trees turned wild and unclaimed.

This time, I crossed the border.
