Chapter 2

I sent the signed acknowledgment form to Colson that same night.

The courier was a young wolf from the Blackthorn Court—silent, efficient, the kind who knew how to move through pack territory without leaving a scent trail. He arrived at the back entrance of the pack house just after midnight. I handed him the sealed envelope. He tucked it inside his jacket and disappeared into the trees without a word.

The bond with Alexander pulsed faintly in my chest. He was three states away by now, sitting in some hotel room reviewing case files for a tribunal that didn't exist. He couldn't feel what I'd just done. Not yet. The severance window had opened, but the bond was still live—a thirty-day countdown he didn't know had started.

I pressed my fingertips against the inside of my wrist and went back upstairs.

The next morning, I met Colson at the eastern tree line just before dawn. The air was cold and sharp. Mist hung low over the ground. I could see my breath. Colson was already there, leaning against a pine tree with his hands in his pockets, looking like he'd been waiting for hours.

I handed him the file.

Five years of records. Dates, scent signatures, behavioral patterns. Every unexplained absence Alexander had taken, every time I'd detected a foreign she-wolf's scent on him through the bond and catalogued it with a Healer's precision. The temporary marks he thought were invisible because they faded within days. I'd written it all down. Neat handwriting. Chronological order. Evidence.

Colson took the file and flipped through it slowly. His expression didn't change. He checked the dates, cross-referenced entries, scanned for gaps with the habitual focus of someone who knew a single missing piece could collapse everything.

"This is thorough," he said quietly.

"I'm a Healer," I replied. "I keep records."

He looked at me then—really looked at me—and something shifted in his face. Not pity. Recognition.

"The tribunal summons will be delivered within forty-eight hours," he said. "Alexander will leave on Day 3. You'll have the full thirty days."

I nodded. My throat was tight.

Colson closed the file and tucked it under his arm. "Serena," he said, his voice dropping lower, "once this starts, it doesn't stop. You understand that?"

"I understand."

He held my gaze for a long moment. Then he stepped back. "I'll be in range if you need me."

I pressed my fingertips against my wrist again and walked back to the pack house alone.

The summons arrived on Day 2.

I was in the kitchen when Derek brought it to Alexander's office. I heard the heavy footsteps, the knock, the low murmur of voices. Then silence. I poured myself tea and waited.

Forty minutes later, Alexander was still in his office. I could feel him through the bond—tense, uneasy, re-reading something over and over. The bond carried emotions more clearly than words. Right now it was transmitting confusion and irritation in equal measure.

I took my tea upstairs.

That night, Alexander told Arianna she would act as his proxy while he was gone. I heard them in the hallway outside our bedroom—his voice low and certain, hers warm and eager. She asked how long he'd be away. He said a week, maybe less. Just a formality. Nothing to worry about.

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall.

On the morning of Day 3, I watched his car pull out of the driveway from the upstairs window. The bond stretched thin across the distance but didn't break. I could still feel him—faint, distracted, already focused on the fabricated tribunal waiting three states away.

I waited until his scent faded completely from the corridors. Then I made the call.

Nadia answered on the second ring.

"It's me," I said.

There was a pause. Then: "I've been waiting for this call for two years."

I told her what I needed. Witness testimony from healers who'd seen Alexander's behavior at inter-pack gatherings. Documentation of wolfsbane's biological signature in my blood work—something only a trained restoration healer could identify. Proof that my wolf's silence wasn't natural.

Nadia didn't ask why. She didn't hesitate. "I'll have three statements by tomorrow night," she said. "And Serena? We all knew. We just didn't know how to help you."

I closed my eyes. "You're helping now."

By nightfall on Day 3, three other she-wolf healers from allied packs had confirmed they would provide statements to the Lycan Council. Women I'd trained with. Women who'd watched me grow smaller over five years and said nothing because there was nothing they could say.

Now there was.

On Day 5, Arianna made her move.

The morning pack run assembled at dawn. I arrived late—deliberately, visibly weakening, moving with the careful slowness of a she-wolf whose bond was dying. My performance. The pack needed to see me fading.

But when I reached the clearing, Arianna was already standing in my position.

The Luna's position. At the head of the assembled wolves. Wearing Alexander's scent like a coat. She was addressing the pack in a tone I'd heard her practice in mirrors—authoritative, commanding, almost convincing.

Every wolf in the clearing turned to look at me.

I stopped at the edge of the group. I didn't speak. I didn't challenge her. I just stood there, small and quiet and diminished, and let them all see it.

Arianna's eyes met mine across the clearing. She smiled.

I pressed my fingertips against my wrist and looked away.

Let her have it. Let her think she's winning.

In twenty-five days, every wolf who watched this moment would remember it. They would remember who stood where. Who wore whose scent. Who stayed silent.

And they would understand exactly what it meant.
