Chapter 2

Marcus doesn't come find me the next morning. Or the morning after.

I tell myself that's fine. I scrub the kitchen floor on my knees and don't look up when boots pass. My arm throbs under the splint. The pain has settled into a steady, useful thing—something to count breaths against.

What I don't know, what I only piece together later, is that Marcus is sitting alone in the security office at 2 a.m. that same night, sleeves rolled up, three monitors glowing, running back timestamps I underlined in my ledger. He watches the pack house's east corridor at 3:14 a.m. A small figure hurries past the camera, a bundle held tight to her chest, head ducked. Nora Pratt. Omega, second-shift laundry. Marcus doesn't know what she's carrying. He rewinds. He watches again. He rewinds a week. Nora, same corridor, same posture, always at hours no laundry rotation ever assigned her. Marcus writes down every timestamp in a black notebook and locks it in his desk drawer. He tells no one. Not yet.

I learn none of this. I only notice that when Marcus passes me in the hallway on the fourth day, his eyes flick once to my splint and away, and something in his jaw goes still.

The first formal pack dinner since the marking is on the seventh night.

I'm assigned to the side tables in an Omega's gray tunic, hair pulled back tight enough to hurt. The great hall glitters—candles down the long tables, the Shadowcrest crest hung fresh behind the dais, warriors in dress uniform. Brielle presides at the head table in a gown the deep blue-black of our pack's colors, and I feel it the moment she stands to speak: her Luna aura, shallow but real, brushing outward like a hand skimming water. Every unmated male in the hall shifts subtly in his chair. It's not strong. It doesn't have to be. The mark on her neck gives her a borrowed authority, and Lennox sits beside her, cured and gleaming, and no one at any table remembers to look at the woman who used to plan this seating chart in her head.

Brielle lifts her glass. "To Shadowcrest," she says, warm as bread. "To the mate the Goddess chose for our Alpha. To the children we'll raise beneath this roof."

Glasses lift. I keep my eyes on the pitcher in my hands.

She smiles down the length of the hall, sweeps her gaze across the side tables, and lets it land on me like she's just noticed I exist.

"Gwendolyn." Her voice carries, sweet, unhurried. "My glass is empty."

The hall goes still. Not silent—stiller than silent. Forks pause halfway to mouths. The Beta's wife at the third table sets her wine down without drinking. A hundred pairs of eyes swing to me, then to Brielle, then back.

I feel Lennox's gaze finally lift, then drop again to his plate before it can meet mine.

My wolf, curled quiet for days, rises just enough to breathe.

I pick up the pitcher. My arm hurts. I don't let it show. I walk the length of the hall between the tables, past faces I've known my whole life, past the Gamma who taught me to shoot at fourteen, past the healer's apprentice who braided my hair for graduation. None of them look at me. I reach the head table. Brielle tilts her glass a fraction, watching my hands.

I pour. The water climbs clean and steady. Not a drop on the linen. I set the pitcher down. I straighten.

"Thank you, sweetheart," Brielle murmurs.

I turn. I walk back. My spine does not bend.

And deep beneath my ribs, my wolf—silent for years, silent through the marking, silent through the fracture, silent through the scrubbing and the sleeping on a straw mat and the choking on his Alpha tone—my wolf opens her mouth against the inside of my chest and speaks. One word. Clear as struck crystal.

*Soon.*

I almost stumble. I don't. I reach my station and set my hands flat against the wood until they stop shaking.

The winter run comes six days later.

My arm isn't healed. The healer signed off anyway, on Lennox's order. I'm handed running gear and told to keep pace with the rear patrol through the northern territory—forty miles of ridgeline and pine, sub-zero by nightfall, the edge of rogue country where our scent markers thin to nothing.

We're eighteen miles in when Lennox stops the run.

I'm at the back, breath fogging, my splinted arm bound tight against my chest under the parka. I see him go rigid at the head of the column. His head snaps east. His hand goes to his temple—mind-link. Whatever he hears empties his face.

"Brielle," he says aloud, and every wolf in the line stiffens. "She's stranded. Eastern woods. Injured."

He doesn't hesitate a full second. He turns on his heel and strides for the patrol vehicle—the only vehicle, our extraction, our way home if anything goes wrong.

Gamma Reeve steps forward. "Alpha, the run—"

"Abandoned. Get back to the compound on foot."

"Sir, we're eighteen miles into rogue—"

"On foot." Alpha tone. Reeve's mouth clicks shut.

Lennox's eyes pass over the line once. They pass over me. They do not stop.

The engine turns. Headlights swing. Gravel spits under the tires, and then the taillights are shrinking down the fire road, and the cold rushes in behind them like water into a broken hull.

Someone curses softly. Someone else starts organizing the return. I stand very still and watch the last red pinprick disappear between the trees.

Snow starts to fall.

My arm is already going numb.
