Chapter 3

Through the rusty iron vent above my head, I heard the pack house coming undone.

It started with footsteps—fast, heavy, and disorganized. In five years as Luna, I had learned the exact rhythm of Ironclaw. The warriors usually moved like clockwork, their boots striking the floor in synchronized thuds. Now, they were stumbling.

Marcus’s voice filtered down the shaft, ragged and breathless.

"Alpha, the southern border patrol just came back," Marcus said. His voice echoed through the metal pipe into my cell. "The Red Ridge wolves pushed two miles past the river. We had eight fighters on the line. They should have handled four rogues in their sleep, Liam. But they broke formation. They retreated."

A chair scraped violently against hardwood above.

"Retreated?" Liam’s voice boomed, sharp and furious. "Ironclaw warriors don't retreat. Did they forget how to hold their ground?"

"They're sluggish," Marcus insisted, his tone tight with an anxiety he couldn't hide. "The trackers lost the scent trail twice before noon. They said their senses felt muddy, like trying to run through wet cement. Liam, something is wrong with the pack’s aura. It’s dropping."

"Enough!" Liam slammed a fist onto his desk. "It’s discipline. They got lazy because we’ve had peace for two years. Double their training drills. Run them until they puke on the gravel, and dock their rations if they complain. Ironclaw is the strongest pack in the Northeast because of *me*, Marcus. Not because our warriors forgot how to growl."

I leaned my back against the cold silver wall, letting out a dry, cracked breath.

He truly had no idea.

For five years, my latent aura had poured across this land like quiet rain, steady and invisible. It had sharpened their teeth. It had fueled their speed. Liam had swallowed all that stolen vitality, looked in the mirror, and crowned himself a god.

Now, with our bond rotting in the dark, the engine had stopped. And he was too arrogant to realize his machine was running on empty.

"Liam, darling," Stella’s voice chimed in, soft as silk and sweet as poisoned honey. She had been standing by the window of the Luna suite, looking down over the courtyard. "Don't be too hard on them. Everyone is just tense. Once Dorian finishes the extraction tonight and my health is restored, our bond will settle the territory. Everything will be perfect."

"You're right," Liam murmured, his anger instantly softening for her. "Tonight changes everything."

The door above clicked shut.

Silence swallowed the cell once more.

That night, the hunger hit a new peak. My stomach cramped violently, twisting around the two crackers Calla had dropped down hours before. Cold sweat slicked my neck and arms. But beneath the hollow ache in my belly, the heat at the base of my spine was no longer just a quiet pulse.

It had grown into a heavy, relentless pressure.

It felt like a massive creature stretching its limbs behind a thin glass wall inside my consciousness. It wasn't frantic. It wasn't thrashing. It moved with deep, slow intent, testing the edges of my ribs, pressing gently against the walls of my mind without breaking them.

Delirium crept in around the edges of my vision. The bare yellow bulb in the ceiling seemed to pulse with my shallow breaths.

I curled onto my side on the narrow cot, pulling my knees toward my chest. My hands were shaking so hard I could barely clasp them together.

I stared into the gray shadows of the silver wall.

"Who are you?" I whispered into the empty air.

My voice was barely a rasp, dry and cracked from lime dust.

The heat didn't answer with words. There was no name, no phantom growl.

Instead, a surge of golden warmth rolled through my spine, pooling thick and steady beneath my heart. It wrapped around my shivering nerves like a heavy velvet blanket, shielding me from the bitter chill of the silver plates. It settled there, patient and enormous.

For the first time in my twenty-three years of life, I did not feel alone in my own skin.

At daybreak, the heavy iron lock ground open with a screech.

Dorian Ashke stepped inside. He wore clean rubber gloves and carried a larger glass syringe than before. The liquid inside wasn't pale violet anymore. It was dark, almost black, thick with concentrated wolfsbane.

"Final preparation," he said flatly. He didn't even glance at my face.

He strapped my arm to the metal armrest of the stool. When the needle slid into my vein, the poison hit like fire mixed with crushed glass.

My back arched off the cot. My vision tunneled into a pinpoint of blinding white light, my ears ringing with high, sharp static. My breath seized in my throat. I clamped my teeth together until I tasted copper on my tongue, refusing to scream.

Dorian stood over me, calmly peeling back the collar of my torn shirt. His cold fingers pressed against the dead, blackened skin of my mate mark. He studied the tissue with clinical detachment, nodding slightly.

"The root is nearly loose," he said, talking more to himself than to me. "The full extraction ritual begins at midnight. We will draw the essence straight through the severance point."

He wiped his hands on a clean towel, entirely indifferent to the way my body shuddered against the metal.

"You should know," he added casually, picking up his tray. "A procedure this invasive usually causes total organ failure in a human body. Usually, an inner wolf surfaces to take the brunt of the trauma and survive the shock. But since you don't have one... your heart will likely stop within ten minutes of the transfer."

He turned toward the door.

"Not that it matters. Stella only needs what comes out."

The heavy iron door slammed shut, and the lock clicked into place.

I lay on the cot, my chest heaving, the black poison searing through every drop of my blood. My hands were trembling, but the fog in my head cleared instantly.

A cold, razor-sharp certainty washed over me.

Dorian thought he was delivering a death sentence.

He didn't realize he had just handed me the key.

My wolf hadn't abandoned me. She had been waiting for the exact moment my human limits shattered—so she could finally tear her way out.

Deep inside my bones, the presence stirred again. And this time, it smiled.
