Chapter 4

On the third evening, the heavy iron bolt didn’t just slide back. It was thrown open with force.

Liam stepped into the cell first, followed closely by Marcus and Dorian.

He wore his heavy leather jacket, looking pristine and untouchable, the picture of an Alpha whose world was entirely under his command. But when his gaze found me, his boots stopped dead on the concrete.

I was still sitting upright, my spine flat against the dull silver wall. My clothes were damp with cold sweat, my skin chalk-white, and my forearms were a patchwork of bruised, purple tracks from Dorian’s needles. Three days without food had hollowed my cheeks and carved deep shadows beneath my eyes.

For a fraction of a second, Liam’s face cracked. His dark eyes flicked over my bruised wrists, and something that looked like guilt—or at least raw discomfort—flared in his pupils.

Then he shut it down. He set his shoulders, letting the cold mantle of the Ironclaw Alpha settle over him like armor.

"Stella had another episode an hour ago," he said. His voice was too steady, too practiced. "Her fever spiked. Dorian says her wolf won’t survive another twelve hours without the transfer."

I didn't blink. I didn't say a word.

"I need you to understand, Claire," he continued, taking a half-step closer, his tone turning reasonable, as if he were explaining pack taxes rather than my own execution. "This isn't out of spite. It’s pack preservation. Stella is my chosen mate. A true Luna holds the territory together. Ironclaw needs her, and she needs this essence to live. It’s necessary."

I kept my eyes locked directly onto his. I didn't beg. I didn't weep. I gave him nothing but the cold, unyielding weight of my silence.

The silence dragged on until it became unbearable. Liam’s jaw worked, rolling in that ugly, tight circle I had watched for five years. He hated being measured and found hollow.

He couldn't take it. His eyes broke from mine and darted toward the concrete floor.

"Marcus," he commanded, looking away entirely. "Move her."

Marcus stepped forward with Dorian. They grabbed my arms and pulled me off the cot. My knees buckled from three days of starvation, but I caught my footing before they could drag me. I forced my legs to work, taking my own steps down the corridor.

They marched me past the cells, down another flight of concrete stairs that spiraled into the sub-foundation. The air grew damp and bitterly cold.

At the end of the hall, Marcus shoved open a pair of reinforced steel doors.

The chamber beyond looked like a slaughterhouse disguised as a clinic. High-intensity surgical lamps hummed overhead, casting a harsh, glaring white light across the room. Stainless steel trays lined the perimeter, loaded with clamps, glass jars, and surgical tools. And right in the center sat a heavy operating table, its surface lined with polished, solid silver.

Dorian gripped my shoulder and shoved me onto the table.

"Lie down," Dorian muttered, his rubber gloves squeaking against the metal.

I didn't fight as the heavy restraints clamped down. Thick, silver-plated bands locked over my wrists and ankles, biting down to the bone. A wide metal strap ratcheted across my sternum, pinning my chest flat against the cold surface so tightly I could barely draw half a breath.

Liam stood in the doorway, his arms crossed over his chest. He stayed back near the threshold, watching the bright lights bounce off the silver table. Suddenly, his left hand twitched, his fingers rising slightly toward his temple.

I knew that tell. It was a mind-link.

*Please hurry,* Stella was almost certainly whispering into his skull. *I can feel it getting worse.*

Liam’s jaw set into stone. He lowered his hand and stared at me like a man who had decided his guilt was simply the price of progress.

Dorian adjusted a tall IV stand beside my head. Suspended from the top was a thick glass cylinder filled with a dark, viscous fluid—wolfsbane at pure extraction grade. It was a lethal concentration, calibrated to rip through the spiritual seams of a wolf's soul.

"The drip is primed," Dorian announced, his voice clinical and hollow. "The infusion will flood the bloodstream, forcing the residual bond-essence toward the mark. From there, the incision allows us to siphon it directly into the collection vial."

He picked up a narrow, silver scalpel from the tray.

Dorian stepped beside my neck. The cold edge of the blade hovered a millimeter above the ruined, blackened skin of my mate mark.

"Opening the valve now," Dorian said.

He clicked the plastic regulator.

The poison didn't trickle. It slammed into my veins like a freight train of liquid fire.

The previous micro-doses were nothing compared to this. It was an agony that had nothing to do with flesh. The wolfsbane tore through my blood, hunting the five years of invisible roots Liam had planted in my chest. It gripped the mate bond and began prying it loose from my soul, twisting and tearing like rusted pliers.

The mate mark on my neck blazed blindingly, white-hot, as if someone had pressed a red-hot iron against my throat.

My body convulsed violently. My back arched off the table as far as the chest strap would allow, the silver restraints groaning under the strain, bruising my wrists and crushing my ribs. I opened my mouth to scream, but no sound came out. The poison had locked my throat into a paralyzed, silent spasm.

Sweat poured off me, mixing with the cold sting of the silver beneath my spine. My vision washed out in jagged static. My heart battered against my ribs, wild and erratic, tripping over itself as the rhythm began to fail.

*Ten minutes,* Dorian had said. *Your heart will stop.*

The dark edges of unconsciousness rushed in from the corners of the room. I was dying. The body they had starved and poisoned was finally breaking apart.

And then, the table beneath me stopped trembling.

The blinding pain was still tearing through my veins, but it suddenly felt distant. Muffled. Like thunder rumbling on the other side of thick glass.

Deep in the dark, silent space beneath my fractured mind, the heat that had lived at the base of my spine for twenty-three years did not shudder. It did not fear the poison.

It rose.

It uncoiled with terrifying, majestic ease, sweeping up through my marrow, swallowing the burning wolfsbane and turning the poison to ash in its wake. It filled every hollow, broken corner of my chest with absolute, suffocating authority.

Then, into the silence of my dying thoughts, a voice broke through.

It was low, ancient, and resonant as iron. Completely unafraid.

*"I am here,"* the voice spoke into my mind, vibrating through every bone in my body. *"I have always been here. And it is time."*
