After My Mate Replaced Me at Our Mating Ceremony
Chapter 2
I woke to the sound of footsteps.
Not hurried. Not cautious. Deliberate. Measured. The kind of footsteps that belonged to someone who had every right to be exactly where they were.
I sat up fast, my hand going to my neck instinctively. The severed bond still ached—a cold, hollow throb that pulsed with every heartbeat. Selene stirred inside me, alert but calm.
*"Someone approaches,"* she said. *"Royal blood."*
I froze.
The door to the cabin didn't open. Instead, a figure appeared at the threshold, silhouetted against the early morning light. Tall. Broad-shouldered. He carried a leather satchel in one hand and moved with the kind of controlled power that made the air feel heavier.
Lycan Prince Kendrick Alexander.
I recognized him immediately. Everyone did. He was the Lycan Crown's enforcer, the one who handled territorial disputes and pack law violations with surgical precision. I'd seen him once at a regional assembly years ago, standing behind the Lycan King with his hands clasped and his expression unreadable.
He stopped just outside the doorway and inclined his head. "Olivia Campbell."
His voice was deep. Resonant. It didn't command—it simply *was*, and that was enough.
I stood slowly, keeping my distance. "Prince Kendrick."
"May I enter?"
I hesitated. Then nodded.
He stepped inside, and the moment he crossed the threshold, it hit me.
Storm-rain and iron. Sharp and electric, like lightning splitting the sky. It slammed into my senses so hard I had to grip the edge of the table to stay upright. My silver-pine and moonflower scent rose instinctively to meet it, tangling, pulling, *aching*.
Selene erupted inside my mind.
*"Mate."*
No.
I shoved the recognition down with everything I had. Locked it behind steel walls and buried it deep. I would not do this again. I would not surrender my autonomy to another bond, another male who thought he had the right to—
Kendrick's eyes flashed gold.
Just for a second. Then he blinked, and the color was gone, replaced by calm, steady amber. He said nothing. Didn't acknowledge it. Didn't push.
He simply set the leather satchel on the table and opened it.
"I'm not here to rescue you," he said evenly. "I'm here because your awakening sent a shockwave through the Lycan bloodline network. That only happens when royal-level blood surfaces."
I stared at him. "Royal blood?"
"We'll address that later." He pulled out a stack of documents and spread them across the table. "Right now, I need your help bringing down Julian Evans."
I stepped closer, my eyes scanning the papers. Forged alliance records. Intercepted communications. Financial ledgers with Julian's signature scrawled across the bottom.
"He's been bleeding Lycan Crown border lands," Kendrick continued, his tone clinical. "Funneling resources to Marcus Riley's failing pack in exchange for political loyalty. The territory theft has been ongoing for three years. I've been building the case, but I need a witness from inside the Shadowvale Pack. Someone who can testify before the Lycan Council tribunal."
I picked up one of the ledgers. The numbers blurred in front of me, but the meaning was clear. Julian had been stealing. Not just from the Lycan Crown—from my adoptive father's pack too. The Silvercrest Pack's financial losses over the past three years suddenly made sense.
"What do you want from me?" I asked quietly.
Kendrick met my gaze. "Testify. I'll provide the legal framework. Together, we strip him of his title, his territory, and his authority. He'll kneel before the tribunal."
The image sent a vicious thrill through me.
But I didn't let it show.
"And what do you get out of this?" I asked.
"Justice," he said simply. "Three years ago, Julian stole border territory from my jurisdiction through forged documents. It crippled my first command as Lycan Prince. I want him to answer for it."
I studied him. His hands were clasped behind his back now, his posture relaxed but absolute. He wasn't lying. I could feel it.
But I could also feel the mate bond pulling at the edges of my awareness, whispering, demanding.
I slammed it down again.
"I'll do it," I said. "On my terms."
Kendrick raised an eyebrow. "Which are?"
"No mate talk. No protective hovering. No claims." I held his gaze. "This is an alliance. Nothing more."
For a long moment, he said nothing. Then he inclined his head. "Agreed."
Relief flooded through me. I exhaled slowly and turned back to the documents.
"When does the tribunal convene?" I asked.
"Two weeks," Kendrick said. "I'll send word when I have more intelligence. In the meantime, stay here. Julian will come for you."
I looked up sharply. "How do you know?"
"Because you're the only thing standing between him and total control of the narrative." Kendrick's eyes flashed gold again, just for a heartbeat. "And because he's a coward who can't stand losing."
He gathered the documents back into the satchel, leaving one ledger on the table for me to review. Then he turned toward the door.
"Olivia."
I looked up.
"You're stronger than you know," he said quietly. "Don't let him convince you otherwise."
Then he was gone.
I stood there in the empty cabin, my hand pressed against my neck, the severed bond still aching.
Selene stirred.
*"He is ours,"* she said fiercely. *"The bond knows."*
"I don't care what the bond knows," I whispered. "I'm not doing this again."
*"This is different."*
"It's always different," I said bitterly. "Until it's not."
She fell silent.
I picked up the ledger Kendrick had left behind and flipped through the pages. Julian's crimes were laid out in meticulous detail. Every stolen resource. Every forged signature. Every lie.
Two weeks.
I had two weeks to prepare.
And then Julian Evans would kneel.
---
The news reached me the next day through Kendrick's network.
Sadie had wasted no time.
She'd issued a formal Luna edict—using Julian's authority—labeling me as a rogue drifter. She'd demanded that all neighboring packs refuse me sanctuary. And then, in front of the entire Shadowvale Pack, she'd announced that she was carrying Julian's pup.
My stomach turned.
She wasn't pregnant. I knew it. Selene knew it. But pack law protected pregnant Lunas with an iron fist. If Sadie could maintain the lie long enough, she'd be legally untouchable.
I crumpled the message in my fist.
*"Let her play her games,"* Selene growled. *"We will destroy her too."*
I didn't answer.
Because at midnight, Julian came.
I heard him before I saw him—his footsteps heavy and deliberate at the tree line. He didn't knock. Didn't call out. He just stood there in the darkness, his aura pressing against the cabin walls like a physical weight.
Then he spoke.
Not with words.
With Alpha tone.
The command hit me like a wall. *Kneel. Return.* It wasn't a request. It was a directive, carried on the residual ghost of our fifteen-year chosen bond, designed to bypass my conscious mind and force my body to comply.
My knees began to bend.
No.
Selene surged forward with a roar.
I met Julian's Alpha tone with my own aura—not shouting, not fighting. Simply *existing* at full power.
The collision was seismic.
Julian's command shattered like glass against stone. I heard him stumble, heard the sharp intake of breath. Through the darkness, I saw his eyes—wide, shocked, afraid.
I stepped outside.
He stood at the edge of the tree line, his chest heaving, his aura cracked and flickering.
"You can't compel me anymore, Julian," I said quietly.
He opened his mouth. Closed it.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the shattered Luna pendant—the one he'd sworn was one of a kind.
I threw it at his feet.
"I saw the matching one around her neck," I said. "You couldn't even bother to lie creatively."
Then I opened the mind-link between us one final time.
And I played back the memory I'd carried in silence for weeks.
Sadie's voice. Lazy. Satisfied. Taunting.
*"I've been warming his bed for years while you warm his reputation, sweetheart."*
Julian's face drained of color.
I severed the link.
"Get off my territory," I said.
He retreated into the darkness.
And I stood there, trembling with rage, my wolf blazing silver in the moonlight.
