After My Mate Replaced Me at Our Mating Ceremony Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I knew the exact moment because I was standing at the altar in white, neck bared, heart hammering so hard I could feel it in my throat. The ceremonial fire crackled between us. Julian walked toward me through the smoke, his face carved in shadows, and I thought—finally. Fifteen years. Fifteen years of standing beside him, managing pack affairs, warming his reputation, sacrificing the Moonsong Sanctuary acceptance letter I'd hidden in a drawer. Tonight, he would mark me. Tonight, I would finally be his Luna.

Then I smelled it.

Beneath his familiar cedarwood—the scent I'd memorized over a decade and a half—something else clung to his skin. Cheap. Musky. Female. My stomach dropped. I knew that scent. I'd caught it before at pack gatherings, always hovering too close to Julian's shoulder. Sadie Riley. A low-ranking warrior with a sharp smile and sharper ambition.

I opened my mouth to speak.

Julian turned to face the assembled Shadowvale Pack instead.

"I, Julian Evans, Alpha of the Shadowvale Pack," his voice rang out, formal and absolute, "reject you, Olivia Campbell, as my mate."

The words hit like a blade between my ribs.

The half-formed bond on my neck—the one we'd built over fifteen years of chosen companionship, the one I'd nurtured through every late-night strategy session and every public event—went ice-cold. The warmth drained out of it like blood from a wound. My vision whited at the edges. I clutched my neck, fingers pressing against the mark that was suddenly hollow, empty, wrong.

Inside me, something howled.

It wasn't me. It was deeper. Older. A presence I'd carried dormant my entire life released a single, devastating cry—and then collapsed into silence.

My wolf.

I'd never heard her before. I'd assumed I was one of those rare she-wolves born without one, a defect I'd learned to hide. But she'd been there all along. And now she was gone.

I staggered. My knees buckled. The pack watched in frozen, horrified silence.

Then Sadie Riley stepped forward.

She moved through the crowd like she owned it, hips swaying, a triumphant smirk splitting her face. She stopped beside Julian, tilted her head, and bared her throat.

Julian didn't hesitate.

He sank his fangs into her neck. The mark flared gold in the firelight. Sadie's eyes found mine across the flames, and she mouthed one word: *Mine.*

The pain in my neck turned molten. I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. The severed bond sent shockwaves through my body, each one worse than the last, like my soul was being ripped apart one thread at a time.

But I didn't fall.

Something else fractured open inside me instead.

My bones cracked. Loud. Audible. The sound echoed through the ceremony hall. My muscles tore and reformed, and I screamed—not in despair, but in rage. My skin split. Fur erupted. My spine arched backward, and I hit the ground on all fours.

I shifted.

For the first time in thirty-three years, I shifted.

My wolf surged to the surface—massive, towering, draped in silver fur that caught the moonlight like liquid metal. An aura exploded outward from my body, dense and overwhelming, a pressure so thick it bent the air. Every wolf in the hall buckled. Julian staggered backward, eyes wide, his newly marked Luna whimpering at his side. Beta wolves dropped to their knees. Someone's glass shattered on the stone floor.

I stood there, trembling, my silver wolf blazing in the firelight.

Julian's mouth opened. Closed. No words came out.

I held his gaze for one long, searing moment. Let him see exactly what he'd just thrown away. Let him feel the weight of the aura pressing down on his chest, the aura he'd never sensed in all our years together because it had been locked behind a seal I didn't even know existed.

Then I turned.

And I walked out.

The ceremonial hall doors slammed open under the force of my wolf's stride. The cool night air hit my fur. Behind me, the pack remained frozen, kneeling, terrified. I didn't look back. My broken mark still smoldered on my neck, cold and hollow, but I kept walking.

I reached the neutral border territory between Shadowvale and the Lycan Crown lands just before dawn. My body forced the shift back—painful, brutal, my bones snapping into human form against my will. I collapsed against a tree, gasping, clutching my neck. The severed bond sent another wave of agony through me, and I bit down on my lip until I tasted blood.

I stumbled forward until I found it—a cold, abandoned border cabin half-swallowed by moss and shadows. I shoved the door open and fell inside.

In the silence, a voice rose in my mind.

Ancient. Imperious. Furious.

*"My name is Selene,"* it said. *"I have been waiting behind a seal you were never meant to carry. The years he stole from us—I will not forgive them."*

I pressed my back against the cabin wall, shaking. "You're… my wolf?"

*"I am your wolf. And I am awake now."*

Tears burned my eyes, but I didn't let them fall. I reached up, unclasped the Luna pendant from my neck—the one Julian had given me years ago, the one he'd sworn was one of a kind—and set it on the cabin's rotting table.

I stared at it.

Then I made my decision.

I wasn't going back.
