Chapter 2

The regional pack commerce center smelled like territory and ambition. Wolves from half a dozen neighboring packs moved through the wide corridors, conducting trade agreements and alliance negotiations in low voices. Neutral ground, technically—but everyone here knew everyone else's rank, and the space hummed with the constant, subtle jockeying of dominance.

I was reviewing supplier contracts with Amias when I felt it.

Alpha aura, rolling through the crowd like a slow wave. Familiar. Deliberate.

I didn't look up immediately. Let him come to me. Let him think he was in control of this encounter.

Amias's pen stilled on the page. "Three o'clock," he murmured. "Both of them."

I took my time finishing the line I was reading before I raised my head.

Vance approached with Lyric at his side, and I could see the calculation in the way he moved—confident but not aggressive, his expression carefully arranged into something that was probably meant to look benevolent. Behind them, wolves from other packs watched with the interest of people who sensed drama but hadn't yet identified the players.

Lyric wore Ironveil's Luna seal prominently at her throat, catching the light with every step. Her hand rested on Vance's arm, and her smile was already in place—the practiced warmth of a woman who had learned to perform authority so thoroughly she might have forgotten it was a performance.

"Well," Vance said, stopping a careful distance away. Not close enough to crowd me, but close enough that his Alpha presence was unmistakable. "What a pleasant surprise. I didn't expect to see you here."

I said nothing. Just looked at him.

His smile wavered slightly. He recovered, gesturing to the contracts spread across the table. "Conducting business, I see. That's... good. It's good to see lone wolves finding their footing."

Inside my chest, Solene stirred. Not a growl this time—something colder. Sharper.

Lyric stepped forward, and her hand landed on my arm before I could move away. Light touch, brief, but deliberate. The kind of touch that established hierarchy without words.

"Darling," she said, her voice carrying just far enough for the onlooking wolves to hear. "I've been thinking about you since we met at the restaurant. It's so difficult for she-wolves without pack protection, isn't it?" Her eyes swept over me with that same practiced assessment. "We really should do something to help."

I looked down at where her hand had been, then back up at her face. Held her gaze until she blinked.

Vance cleared his throat. "Actually, that's part of why I wanted to speak with you." He straightened slightly, and I watched his hand drift toward his Alpha seal—that old tell, the one that meant he was about to say something he wanted to sound more confident about than he felt. "Ironveil is always looking for capable wolves. We have an opening in our Omega staff—administrative work, nothing too demanding. It would give you pack protection, regular meals, a place to stay."

He paused, clearly expecting gratitude.

I let the silence stretch.

"It's a generous offer," Lyric added, her smile still firmly in place. "Most packs wouldn't extend this kind of opportunity to a rogue. But we believe in giving wolves a second chance."

Second chance.

The words hung in the air between us, and I felt something in my chest go very still. Very cold.

Amias shifted beside me—barely perceptible, but I knew what it meant. He was cataloging which wolves were watching, which ones were leaning in to catch the conversation. Recording.

"That's very kind," I said softly.

Vance's expression brightened. "So you'll—"

"But I'll have to decline."

His smile froze. Lyric's hand tightened on his arm.

I set down the contract I'd been holding and folded my hands on the table. Looked at them both with the same calm I'd use to discuss weather. "You see, I've already had the experience of being part of Ironveil. I was Luna there, once. Before the affair."

The air changed.

Vance went very pale. Lyric's practiced warmth cracked like ice.

"I developed the pack's healing program," I continued, my voice still quiet, still pleasant. "Trained the medical staff. Built the research protocols from nothing. I had a mate bond—fated, blessed by the Moon Goddess herself." I paused. Let them see my face. "And then my mate took my mentee to his bed. Together, they fabricated treason charges. He rejected me in front of the entire pack. Severed the bond. Stripped my title. Banished me as a rogue."

I could feel the onlooking wolves going still, their attention sharpening.

"My pup was gravely ill," I said. "I was developing a treatment specifically for her condition. When I was exiled and lost access to pack resources, I couldn't complete it. She died in a rogue shelter. Alone."

Vance's hand was at his collar now, gripping the Alpha seal like it could save him. "You—you can't—"

"I'm not accusing anyone," I said gently. "I'm simply stating what happened. Facts. Public record, really, for anyone who cares to look."

Lyric's smile was gone entirely now, replaced by something brittle and sharp. "How dare you—"

"So you'll understand," I continued, as though she hadn't spoken, "why I'm not particularly interested in an Omega position. I've already experienced Ironveil's hospitality. Once was enough."

I stood, gathering my contracts. Amias moved with me, smooth and silent.

Vance looked like he was trying to speak but couldn't find the words. His Alpha aura flickered—uncertainty bleeding through the dominance, visible to every wolf in the corridor.

I met his eyes one last time. Saw recognition there now, fighting with denial. He knew. Some part of him knew.

"Enjoy your day," I said softly.

Then I walked past them, through the crowd of watching wolves, and out into the afternoon light.

Behind me, I heard Lyric's voice, high and sharp. "She's lying. She's—Vance, say something!"

I didn't look back.

In my chest, Solene purred. Not satisfaction, exactly. Something deeper. The feeling of a trap being set, piece by careful piece.

Amias waited until we reached the car before he spoke. "Half the wolves in that corridor were from allied packs. By nightfall, this will be in every Alpha's ear within two hundred miles."

"I know," I said.

Through the bond, I felt Kyson's presence pulse—warmth and fierce approval, the emotional equivalent of well done.

I slid into the car and let Amias close the door.

Phase one complete.
