Chapter 3

The envelope arrived three days later.

I knew what it was before I opened it. Neutral courier, formal seal, the kind of communication that pretended at civility while delivering something else entirely. Amias set it on my desk without comment, but I caught the tension in his shoulders as he stepped back.

I waited until I was alone to break the seal.

The letter was brief. Formal pack letterhead, Vance's signature at the bottom in that confident script I used to know so well. The words were carefully chosen, each one a calculated move.

*I have erected a memorial marker for Hallie in Ironveil's ancestral grove. A place of honor, where she can rest among the pack's most revered. You are welcome to visit—as my guest.*

As his guest.

I read the line again. Let the full weight of it settle.

He had built her grave on his territory. Under his authority. And now he was offering me access—conditional, controlled, a gift he could revoke at will. He was using our dead daughter as a leash.

The paper crumpled in my hand before I realized I was gripping it.

Through the bond, I felt Kyson's presence surge—immediate, sharp, the emotional equivalent of *what's wrong*. The mind-link flared hot with his concern, and I knew he could taste the edge of my fury even before I consciously felt it myself.

Inside my chest, Solene exploded forward.

Not a whisper. Not a stirring. A full, golden eruption of rage that pressed against my consciousness like a physical force. Her snarl reverberated through my bones, and for a second—just a second—I felt my vision blur, felt the room tilt as she surged toward the surface.

*He dares.* Her voice was raw, feral, nothing like the gentle warmth she usually carried. *He uses her. He uses our pup.*

I pressed my palms flat against the desk. Breathed.

"I know," I whispered. "I know."

Kyson's presence pulsed through the bond again, and this time I felt the question beneath the concern: *Do you need me there?*

I sent back warmth. Steadiness. The emotional equivalent of *I'm handling it*.

But inside, where only Solene could feel it, I let the rage crystallize into something colder. Sharper. The kind of fury that didn't burn hot—it cut clean.

Vance thought he still had leverage. He thought invoking Hallie's memory would bring me to heel, would make me grateful for scraps of access to a grave he controlled.

He had just confirmed that mercy was never owed.

I smoothed the crumpled letter flat on the desk. Read it one more time. Let every word etch itself into memory.

Then I reached for my phone.

Amias answered on the first ring. "Ma'am?"

"Activate the contacts," I said quietly. "All of them. It's time."

A pause. Then: "Understood."

I hung up and sat back in my chair. Through the window, the afternoon light slanted gold across the floor, peaceful and utterly at odds with the storm building in my chest.

Solene's fury hadn't subsided. If anything, it had sharpened, honed itself into something that felt almost like anticipation.

*Good,* she growled. *Let him think he's won. Let him think he still controls anything.*

I closed my eyes. Let myself feel it—the full weight of what he'd done, what he was still trying to do. Using Hallie. Using the memory of the pup he'd helped kill through his cruelty.

There would be no second chances. No moment of weakness where old bonds reasserted themselves. The mate bond was dead. The man who had once been mine was a stranger now, and strangers didn't get to weaponize grief.

My phone buzzed. A message from Amias: *First meeting confirmed. Tomorrow, 14:00. Ashford Estate.*

I typed back: *Confirmed.*

Then I stood and walked to the window. Outside, the grounds of Kyson's estate stretched green and peaceful under the afternoon sun. Somewhere in the distance, I could hear the low murmur of Lycan Guard drills—steady, disciplined, the sound of power that didn't need to announce itself.

Through the bond, I felt Kyson's presence again. Closer this time. He was on his way.

I didn't turn when I heard the door open behind me. Didn't need to. His scent—cedar and rain—wrapped around me before his hands did, and when he pulled me back against his chest, I let myself lean.

"Tell me," he said quietly.

I handed him the letter without speaking.

I felt the shift in his body as he read it. The way his arms tightened fractionally around me. The low, dangerous sound that rumbled through his chest—not quite a growl, but close.

"He thinks this is leverage," Kyson said, his voice soft and absolutely lethal.

"He's wrong," I said.

His hand came up to cup my jaw, turning my face toward him. His eyes were molten silver, and I could see Fenris moving behind them—ancient, furious, barely contained.

"Say the word," he said. "I'll go there myself. I'll rip that memorial out of the ground and bring it here, where it belongs."

I reached up and covered his hand with mine. "No," I said softly. "This has to be done the right way. Completely. So thoroughly that when it's over, there's nothing left for him to cling to."

Kyson's jaw tightened, but he nodded. He understood. He always did.

"Tomorrow," I said. "We start dismantling his alliances. One by one. And by the time he realizes what's happening, it will already be too late."

Inside my chest, Solene purred—dark, satisfied, patient.

Kyson pressed his forehead to mine. Through the bond, I felt his absolute, unwavering support. His fury on my behalf. His willingness to burn the world if I asked.

But I didn't need the world burned.

I just needed Vance's carefully constructed kingdom reduced to ash.

And I was going to do it with a smile.
