Chapter 2

The silver sparks dancing across my bare skin finally faded, but the cold silence on the stage remained absolute.

Callahan stood frozen three feet away. His Alpha tone had shattered into nothing, leaving his mouth slightly open and his chest heaving with shallow, panicked breaths. Down below, three hundred wolves stared up at us, their eyes wide with disbelief.

I didn't waste another second looking at him. I turned toward the first row, where the pack elders stood in their ceremonial robes.

"Elder Silas," I said, my voice cutting through the damp night air. "I demand an immediate formal investigation. Chelsea Harper must be taken into custody for bloodline verification. Pack warriors need to seize every pantry supply and kitchen log from the last ten years to test for wolfsbane. And this Mate Ceremony must be suspended."

"That's absurd!" Chelsea shrieked. She stepped past Callahan, her silk gown rustling as she pointed a shaking, manicured finger at me. "She's delusional! She’s an Omega who lost her mind because Callahan rejected her! That beast isn't a wolf—it's corrupted rogue blood! She’s a monster!"

I took a slow, deliberate breath.

With Seraphine awake, my senses were razor-sharp. The heavy floral perfume Chelsea wore couldn't hide what lay beneath. Beta blood carried the scent of sweet pine and rich, clean soil.

What I smelled from Chelsea was stale pond water, dried copper, and burnt ash.

"Beta blood carries mountain cedar and loam," I said coldly, looking her dead in the eye. "You smell like a ditch, Chelsea. You’re rogue-descended. And everyone here is going to know it before sunrise."

A collective murmur rippled through the clearing. Elders exchanged alarmed glances.

"You lie!" Chelsea screamed, but the pitch of her voice gave her away.

Before anyone else could shout, footsteps clicked against the wooden platform stairs.

Koda Daniels walked out under the torchlight. He didn't look at Callahan. He walked straight toward me, stopped two paces away, and dropped hard onto one knee. Without a word of hesitation, he tilted his head to the side, baring his neck in full submission to me.

"Koda, what are you doing?" Callahan snarled, his voice cracking. "I am your Alpha!"

Koda didn't flinch. "My loyalty is to true strength."

A second passed. Then, from the front ranks, three senior Delta warriors broke formation. They stepped forward, climbed the stairs, and dropped to their knees beside Koda, baring their throats to my aura.

Callahan took a staggering step back, his face gray. His pack was cracking in half right before his eyes.

I didn't sleep that night.

They sent me back to my Omega quarters in the basement—the same small, drafty room with peeling paint I had lived in for ten years. The mark on my collarbone where Callahan's bond had died felt like a slab of cold lead. I didn't touch it.

Instead, I sat at my wooden desk before dawn, pulling out stacks of paper.

For years, the pack house managers made me do the grunt work. I had tracked every pantry delivery, kitchen inventory, and supply order because no one else wanted to touch the paperwork. Back then, I thought it was just mindless labor meant to keep me busy.

Now, Seraphine guided my eyes across the ledger lines.

The pattern was staring right at me. Every Tuesday and Friday, when the tea supplies and cooking broths were restocked, Chelsea had personally signed off on the pantry access keys. The requisition numbers lined up with deliveries from an off-pack apothecary that wasn't on our approved supplier list. Micro-doses of wolfsbane, hidden right inside the daily kitchen rotation I had logged with my own hands.

She had left a paper trail ten years long because she never believed a wolfless Omega would ever learn how to read between the lines.

By sunrise, the pack house above me was in chaos.

Heavy boots echoed through the hallways. Shouting broke out in the courtyard. Chelsea's faction of young warriors was loudly demanding I be put in silver chains before I attacked someone, while the older warriors argued back, still spooked by how Callahan’s Alpha command had failed.

The council elders had convened an emergency session in the grand hall on the third floor.

At seven in the morning, a firm knock sounded on my door. Koda stepped in, his expression dark.

"Chelsea just walked into the council chamber with Callahan," Koda said quietly. "She's making a formal motion. She claims an Omega who suddenly shifts into a giant wolf has to be a rogue infiltrator using dark alchemy. She's asking the elders to declare you a rogue-blood threat and lock you in the holding cells."

"And Callahan?" I asked, gathering the ledger sheets into a neat folder.

"He's backing her," Koda replied, a bitter edge to his voice. "His aura is weak today, but he's still the Alpha of record. If the council signs off, the warriors will have to drag you down to the cells."

I stood up, smoothing down the simple gray sweater and dark jeans I had put on. "Let's go."

We walked up the stairs in silence. When we reached the third floor, two guards stood outside the heavy oak doors of the council room. They moved to block my path, but when I looked them in the eyes, Seraphine let out a low, silent warning beneath my skin. Both guards swallowed hard, dropping their gazes and stepping aside.

I pushed the heavy doors open without knocking.

Inside, twelve elders sat around the long mahogany table. Chelsea stood at the center, clutching Callahan’s arm, tears glistening in her eyes as she performed for the room. Callahan stood beside her, his shoulders slumped, his dark hair messy, looking like a man carrying an invisible anvil.

"—she could slaughter half the pack in her sleep!" Chelsea was crying out. "We have to contain her before—"

She choked on her words as I walked in.

The room fell dead silent.

I held the thick folder against my chest, my chin high, letting the raw pressure of Seraphine's presence gently wash over the mahogany table. The elders flinched, shifting uncomfortably in their high-backed chairs.

"Elder Silas," I said, my voice low and perfectly steady. "I request the floor."

Silas looked from Callahan’s pale, sweat-sheened forehead back to me. He cleared his throat, unable to look away from the cold fire in my eyes.

"The floor is granted, Flora," Silas said.
