Chapter 3

I walked up to the mahogany table and dropped the folder onto the polished wood.

The sound cracked like a gavel in the tense room.

Chelsea took a quick step back, her fingers clutching Callahan’s forearm so hard her knuckles turned white. Callahan didn't look at her. His dark eyes were fixed on me, wide and hollow, his chest rising and falling in tight, shallow breaths.

"I didn't come here to defend my nature," I said, keeping my voice low and steady. "I came to present the pack records."

Elder Silas leaned forward, his brow furrowed. "What records, Flora?"

"Kitchen supply logs and requisition forms from the last ten years," I said, sliding the top papers toward him. "Every Tuesday and Friday, off-ledger shipments of refined wolfsbane extract entered this pack house under false inventory codes. Micro-doses were mixed directly into the broths and herbal teas meant for the lower-level staff. Specifically, my rations."

Whispers broke out among the elders.

"Wolfsbane doesn't just vanish in the body," I continued, tapping the paper. "It settles in the bone marrow. It paralyzes a young wolf's core so the spirit cannot awaken. For ten years, I lived with nausea, chills, and muscle tremors. And every single year, during the mandatory pack physicals, one person examined me and signed off on 'constitutional Omega weakness.'"

I turned my head slowly toward the back of the chamber.

My eyes landed on a woman sitting near the tall windows. Maren Voss, the pack’s head Healer.

"Didn't you, Healer Voss?" I asked softly.

Maren froze. The color drained from her cheeks until she looked like chalk. She gripped the armrests of her chair, her gaze darting frantically toward Chelsea.

"I—I only diagnosed what the symptoms showed—" Maren stammered, her voice shaking violently.

"You hold a master's degree in supernatural pathology from the capital," I said, cutting right through her lie. "You know the exact biochemical footprint of wolfsbane toxicity. You didn't miss it. You chose not to see it."

Silence crashed over the council room. Silas’s hands trembled as he picked up the first requisition sheet. His jaw hardened. Beside him, the other elders stared at the signatures on the bottom of the slips—signatures tied directly to the Luna's private pantry key.

Chelsea opened her mouth to shriek another denial, but Silas held up a single hand.

"Enough," Silas rumbled, not looking up from the papers. "This council will review every single sheet. Guards, place Healer Voss under room arrest pending formal inquiry."

Maren choked on a sob as two warriors stepped behind her chair.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I turned on my heel and walked out of the council chambers, leaving the wreckage of their perfect order behind me.

That evening, I stood near the narrow arched window of the third-floor corridor, looking out over the pack grounds. The sun was dipping below the tree line, bleeding crimson into the gray clouds.

Footsteps approached from behind, heavy and unsteady.

I didn't turn around. I didn't need to. The scent of cedar and damp rain rolled down the hallway, but it was sour now. Frayed at the edges.

"Flora."

Callahan stopped four paces away. He was still wearing his Alpha leather jacket, but his shoulders were slumped. His aura, usually a solid wall of iron, felt thin. Hairline cracks ran through his presence, like pressure leaking from a punctured tire. Rejecting a true mate came with a biological price, and his wolf was already beginning to wither under the weight of it.

"I didn't know," Callahan said, his voice rough. "About the wolfsbane. Flora, I swear to the Goddess, I had no idea Chelsea was doing that."

I kept looking out at the trees. "Does it matter?"

He flinched. He took a hesitant step closer, his hand reaching out as if to touch my shoulder, then dropping back to his side.

"It matters," he pleaded, trying to sound authoritative, but the command was completely gone from his tone. "The rejection... you have to understand my position. The pack was under pressure. The council wanted a Luna with strong Beta lineage to secure our northern borders. It was a political calculation. It wasn't a judgment of your worth."

He drew in a shaky breath, stepping into my peripheral vision. "Now that we know what you are... now that your wolf is awake, we can fix this. The elders will nullify Chelsea's claim after what you showed them today. I can take back the rejection. We can do the ceremony again."

I finally turned my head to look at him.

He looked desperate. Not because he loved me, but because he could feel his own strength slipping through his fingers. For ten years, I had held onto the milk-fang pendant he gave me as a boy, treating his childhood kindness like sacred scripture.

Now, I just saw a weak man terrified of losing his crown.

"I have one question for you, Callahan," I said.

His eyes lit up with a flicker of pathetic hope. "Anything."

"Yesterday, on the stage," I said, my voice dead calm. "When you grabbed my wrist under the torches, before you spoke the rejection vow... did you know?"

Callahan opened his mouth.

Then he stopped.

The silence between us stretched out, thick and suffocating. Five seconds. Ten seconds.

He didn't speak. He couldn't. His eyes flickered toward the floor, the guilt burning bright in his face.

He had smelled the dark cedar and rain on me before he said the words. He had felt the Moon Goddess’s spark snap between our palms. He had known I was his fated mate, and he had thrown me away anyway because he thought an Omega was worthless to his ambition.

"That's what I thought," I murmured.

I turned away from him and walked down the corridor. He didn't call after me. He just stood there in the dim hall, listening to his own shallow, ragged breathing.

When I returned to my room, Koda was waiting outside my door. He leaned against the wall with his arms crossed, his dark eyes sharp.

"The council is tearing itself apart," Koda said quietly as I unlocked the deadbolt. "Silas has sealed the supply rooms. Chelsea is locked in the north wing throwing crystal vases at the walls."

"Let her," I said, stepping inside.

Koda followed, closing the door behind him. He pulled a folded memo from his jacket pocket.

"That's not why I came," he said, handing the paper to me. "A dispatch just arrived from the border outposts. An official Lycan Court delegation has entered the outer valley. They’re scheduled to reach the Shadowmere border gates in three days for the treaty summit."

I looked down at the royal seal stamped in dark red wax.

"Who is leading it?" I asked.

"King Kenneth Reynolds himself," Koda replied. "Along with Prince Kieran and their elite guard."

The moment Koda spoke the King's name, something deep inside my chest pulled hard.

It wasn't pain. It was a heavy, magnetic resonance that made Seraphine lift her head within my mind, her silver fur bristling with sudden, violent awareness. Across the miles of forest, through the damp pine and mountain mist, an invisible thread seemed to tighten between my ribcage and the northern horizon.

My breath caught in my throat.

"Flora?" Koda asked, noticing my sudden stillness. "What is it?"

I slowly lowered the paper, staring toward the dark window. The pull in my blood was undeniable, calling out to something ancient and fierce.

"I'm going to the border gate," I said quietly. "In three days. I want to be standing there when they arrive."

Koda looked at my eyes, seeing the faint silver ring glowing around my pupils. He didn't ask a single question.

"I'll make sure you're there," he said.
