Chapter 3

For one terrible moment, I felt exactly what my mother felt.

The collapse. The wolf going silent. The slow death of a she-wolf whose bond has been destroyed.

It wasn't metaphorical. My body was shutting down — the channels that my dormant wolf had been using to process the mate bond's energy were closing, one by one, like doors slamming in a hallway. The withdrawal was catastrophic. My heart stuttered. My lungs seized. I couldn't get air.

I was going to die like she died.

I could feel it starting — the same wasting, the same biological surrender. My mother had lasted three months after her bond broke. I wondered, distantly, if I would last three days.

Then something reversed.

It started in my chest — not the pressure this time, but a surge. A flood. Like something enormous had been dammed behind a wall for twenty-six years and the wall had just exploded.

Power.

Not borrowed. Not faint. Not dormant.

Mine.

The royal Lycan blood that Caspian had been siphoning through our mate mark for six years came home. All of it. Six years of stolen power, flooding back into its source in a single catastrophic instant.

I convulsed on the stones. My spine arched. My hands clawed at the ground, and the ground cracked beneath my fingers.

This wasn't collapse. This was awakening.

My eyes flooded gold — I could see it reflected in the horrified faces around me, the way they all stumbled backward, the way Marcus let go of my arm like I'd burned him.

My bones cracked. Not breaking — reshaping. My ribs expanded with the explosive force of something caged for twenty-six years. My muscles surged and reformed. My skin split along lines of silver light, and I felt my wolf — my wolf, finally, after a lifetime of silence — rise inside me with the roar of something that had been waiting.

I shifted.

The transformation was not gentle. It tore through me like lightning, and when it finished, I was no longer kneeling on the courtyard stones.

I was standing.

A massive silver Lycan wolf, nearly three meters tall, fur shimmering like liquid moonlight. I could feel the Lycan aura radiating from me like a gravitational force — ancient, undeniable, sovereign.

Every wolf in the courtyard dropped to their knees.

Not a choice. Instinct. The kind older than thought.

Necks bare. Throats exposed. Submit to the bloodline that outranks you all.

I looked down at them. At Marcus, whose hands had held me. At Deacon, whose knee had been on my back. At Sable, who had read the expulsion scroll. At Brooke, frozen halfway to the tree line, her face white.

At Caspian.

He staggered backward. His wolf — the dark grey with the unnaturally thick mane — howled inside him. Not in challenge. In terror.

I could see his Alpha aura with my wolf-sight now. It had always been there, shimmering around him like heat haze. But now it was cracking. Splitting down the center like ice under pressure.

His fur — visible beneath his skin to anyone with wolf-sight — was losing density in real time. Dull patches spreading like watercolor bleeding through wet paper.

The entire pack watched it happen.

"I take it back." His voice cracked. The control was gone. "I retract the rejection, Naomi — I didn't mean—"

I moved.

One step. My paw hit the stone, and the courtyard shook.

Caspian tried to back away. I pinned him with one enormous paw, and the stone beneath him cracked like eggshell. He gasped — not in pain, but in shock. His wolf whimpered inside him.

Not the sound of an Alpha.

The sound of something that had never been an Alpha.

I looked into his eyes. The man whose hair I had smoothed every morning. Whose daughter was bleeding ten feet away. Who had just tried to kill me with a rejection vow and accidentally freed me instead.

My gold eyes held no mercy. No grief. No residual love.

Only recognition.

He had always been small. Now everyone could see it.

I lifted my head and released a howl.

It shattered every window in the pack house. The glass exploded outward in a glittering wave, and wolves across the courtyard flinched and covered their ears. But they couldn't block it. A Lycan howl carries on a frequency that bypasses the ears and goes straight into the bones.

It was a declaration.

It was a summons.

It carried for miles — across Silverfang territory, into the neighboring packs, beyond the mountains.

Someone, somewhere, would hear it. Someone who knew what that frequency meant.

Brooke turned and ran.

She made it three steps before the Silverfang warriors moved. Not to help her. To block her.

Marcus stepped into her path. Deacon flanked him. One by one, the warriors who had held me down moments ago formed a line between Brooke and the tree line, their heads still lowered to me, their bodies choosing bloodline over borrowed authority.

Brooke spun, looking for an opening. There was none.

She looked at me.

I stepped off Caspian's chest — slowly, deliberately — and he curled onto his side, gasping. His wolf was silent now. Not dormant. Dying.

I walked toward Brooke.

She backed up until her shoulders hit the pack house wall. Her ceremonial Luna dress — my dress — was pressed flat against the stone.

"Naomi." Her voice shook. "Naomi, please — I didn't know — I thought—"

I stopped in front of her.

My massive silver head tilted. My gold eyes held hers.

I didn't need to speak. She could see it in my gaze.

I knew exactly what she thought. I knew exactly what she did. And I was going to remember every single moment of it.

Then I turned away from her.

Because Brooke Fernandez was not worth my first words in this form.

I walked to the silver-lined door.

Avayah was still crumpled beside it, her small body folded in on itself, her crushed hand cradled against her chest. She wasn't crying. She was just breathing — short, shallow breaths that told me she was in shock.

I shifted back.

The transformation reversed as fast as it had come. Bones cracking, muscles reshaping, silver light fading. I landed on my knees beside her, human again, naked and shaking.

"Avayah."

Her eyes opened. Gold, like mine. Just for a second. Then brown again.

"Mama," she whispered.

I gathered her into my arms — carefully, so carefully — and stood.

The entire courtyard was still on their knees.

I looked at them. At the pack I had served for six years. At the faces that had watched my daughter be maimed and done nothing.

"Stay down," I said.

My voice was different now. Deeper. Resonant. The Alpha tone, but older. Lycan.

They stayed down.

I carried Avayah toward the tree line. No one moved to stop me.

Behind me, Caspian was still on the ground, his wolf whimpering, his aura cracking apart.

Behind me, Brooke was pinned against the wall by warriors who had finally chosen the right side.

Behind me, Silverfang Pack knelt in the ruins of their own corruption.

And ahead of me — miles away, beyond the mountains — someone had heard my howl.

Someone was coming.
