Chapter 4

The howl still echoed in my bones hours later.

I sat on the floor of the Luna's quarters — former Luna's quarters — with Avayah curled against my chest. Her breathing had finally steadied. The pack healer had wrapped her crushed fingers in silver-neutralizing salve and clean bandages, working in silence under my instruction. I'd told her exactly what Avayah's nerve damage required. Exact measurements. Precise application points. The kind of knowledge you don't get from a title scroll.

She'd followed every word without question.

Now it was just us. Avayah and me. The room was dark except for the moonlight coming through the window — the same window I'd looked through a thousand times, watching Caspian cross the courtyard, believing he was coming home to us.

My hand drifted to my neck. To the place where the mark had been.

Cold skin. Just cold skin.

The tears came then. Not loud. Not the kind that shook my shoulders. Just silent, hot tracks down my face that I couldn't stop.

I wasn't crying for Caspian. I was crying for the woman who'd believed him. For six years of mornings when I'd smoothed his hair back and thought I was loved. For every time I'd softened my voice to manage a threat I didn't know I was managing. For my mother, who'd died this same way — bond severed, wolf silenced, body wasting.

For the girl I'd been before tonight, who'd never known what she was.

My hand pressed flat against my chest, and I felt it.

The hum. Not the bond — that was gone. This was something else. Something that had always been there, buried so deep I'd mistaken the silence for absence.

Then a voice spoke inside me.

*'I am here, Naomi.'*

I froze.

*'I have always been here. He kept me from you. But I am here now, and we will never be caged again.'*

My wolf.

My wolf had a voice.

I pressed both hands to my ribs, breath catching. "What's your name?"

The answer came like something I'd always known but forgotten.

*'Seraphine.'*

I closed my eyes. Seraphine. Silver and fire and twenty-six years of silence, all wrapped into one word.

"We're not alone anymore," I whispered.

*'We never were. You just couldn't hear me. Now you can.'*

Avayah stirred against my chest. Her small hand — the uninjured one — curled into my shirt. I looked down at her and smoothed her hair back, the same way I did every morning, and I made a promise.

No one would ever use a bond to cage us again.

---

I didn't sleep.

By the time dawn broke, I'd dressed in clean clothes and braided Avayah's hair while she dozed. My hands shook the first two tries. The third braid held.

A knock came at the door before the sun fully cleared the horizon.

I opened it to find Roan Calloway standing there — the Delta warrior who'd blocked Brooke's escape route last night. He held a folded paper in one hand and met my eyes without flinching.

"Luna," he said.

I didn't correct him. The title wasn't mine anymore, but the way he said it wasn't about Caspian's authority. It was about the wolf he'd knelt to in the courtyard.

"What is it?"

He handed me the paper. "Names. Every warrior who held you down last night. Cross-referenced against every warrior who knelt to your wolf."

I unfolded it. Two columns. Neat handwriting. Twelve names on the left. Twenty-three on the right.

I looked up. "You made this yourself?"

"Yes, Luna."

"Why?"

His jaw tightened. "Because you'll need it. When the Council comes."

Smart. Roan Calloway was smarter than I'd given him credit for.

I folded the paper and tucked it into my pocket. Then I met his eyes and said the thing I'd been thinking since three in the morning.

"Bring me the pack's resource ledgers. All of them. Six years back."

He blinked. "The financial records?"

"Yes."

"Luna, those are kept in the Alpha's private office—"

"I know where they're kept. Bring them to me by noon."

He studied my face for a long moment. Then he nodded once and left.

I closed the door and leaned against it.

Something in Caspian's management of Silverfang had never added up. Warriors deployed to border patrols that didn't need reinforcement. Resources funneled to 'training initiatives' that never produced results. I'd noticed it over the years — small inconsistencies, things that didn't quite fit — but I'd been too busy managing pack welfare and raising Avayah to dig deeper.

Now I had time.

Now I had a wolf who could see in the dark.

---

By mid-morning, word had spread.

I could feel it through the mind-link — not the Silverfang link, which was still dead to me, but something older. Broader. Seraphine's awareness stretched across the territory like a net, catching whispers.

Neighboring packs were sending representatives to the Silverfang borders. Not to offer condolences. To assess.

Alphas who'd deferred to Caspian's borrowed dominance for years were suddenly very interested in what had replaced it.

I stood at the window and watched the tree line. No movement yet. But they were coming.

Behind me, Avayah stirred. She sat up slowly, cradling her bandaged hand.

"Mama?"

I turned. "I'm here, baby."

"Is it over?"

I crossed the room and knelt in front of her. Brushed a strand of hair from her face. "Not yet. But soon."

She looked at me with those wide brown eyes — eyes that had flashed gold for just a second last night. "What happened to you?"

I touched her cheek. "I woke up."

"Are you different now?"

I thought about that. About the wolf inside me. About the power that had flooded back when the bond broke. About the way every wolf in the courtyard had dropped to their knees.

"Yes," I said. "But I'm still your mama."

She nodded slowly. Then she leaned forward and pressed her forehead to mine, the way I used to do when she had nightmares.

We stayed like that until the knock came at the door again.

This time, it wasn't Roan.

I opened it to find three black SUVs parked in the courtyard below. Warriors in formal Lycan Council uniforms stood at attention. And at the center of them, stepping out of the lead vehicle, was a man I'd never seen before.

Tall. Dark hair. Eyes that caught the light like a wolf's.

He looked up at my window.

Our eyes met.

And I smelled it — faint, carried on the wind, but unmistakable.

Wild jasmine and cold silver.

The same scent Seraphine carried.

The same scent that had just traveled hundreds of miles in a single howl.

*'He heard us,'* Seraphine murmured.

I gripped the window frame.

The man in the courtyard tilted his head. Not a question. A recognition.

Then he walked toward the pack house, and I knew — with the certainty of blood calling to blood — that everything was about to change again.
