Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:47 on the final night of the Blood Debt.

I felt it the moment I rounded the corner behind the pack house—not a crack, not a snap, but a slow, sickening drain, like warmth bleeding out through a wound I couldn't see. My mark went cold first. Then numb. Then empty.

Maximus stood with his back to me, his jacket half-open, his hand still tangled in Khloe's hair. Her neck was bruised. Fresh. The imprint of his mouth glowed dark against her skin, and the scent—their scent, mingled and unmistakable—hung in the night air like something already decided.

I didn't move. I didn't speak. I stood there in my Luna's ceremonial attire, the ancestral moonstone pendant heavy at my throat, and watched my mate pull back from another woman with the careful, practiced ease of someone who had done this before.

He straightened his jacket. Smoothed his collar. And walked past me toward the banquet hall without meeting my eyes.

Khloe's smirk followed me all the way back inside.

The banquet floor was packed—warriors, Deltas, families gathered to celebrate the oath's completion. I should have been standing on that stage beside him. I had waited ten years for this night. Ten years of sharing my home, my mate, my title with the woman who was supposed to be temporary. The Blood Debt was done. Tonight was supposed to be ours.

I positioned myself near the front of the crowd, my hands steady at my sides. My wolf stirred uneasily inside my chest, pacing, whining—something was wrong, something was coming—but I forced myself still.

Maximus ascended the stage. The crowd quieted instantly. He didn't need to raise his voice. His Alpha tone pulsed once through the mind-link, a command that silenced even the rustling of fabric.

"I, Maximus Alexander, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack," he said, his voice clear and carrying, "reject you, Anastasia West, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold.

Not painful. Not burning. Just—extinguished. Like a flame snuffed out between two fingers. I felt it down my spine, through my ribs, into the hollow space where the bond used to hum. My aura cracked. I felt it fracture outward, a visible ripple that every wolf in the hall could sense through the mind-link. The bond shattered like glass exploding from the inside, and the entire pack felt it simultaneously.

Someone gasped. A Delta near the back staggered.

Khloe ascended the stage.

She wore my pendant. The Luna's ceremonial moonstone, stripped from my neck and transferred in advance. She stood at Maximus's side, her hand resting lightly on his arm, and looked directly at me. Her smile was small. Satisfied. Final.

I should have felt rage. I should have felt grief. But all I felt was cold.

And then—something else.

My bones cracked.

It started in my spine, a pressure building so fast I couldn't breathe. My ribs expanded. My hands convulsed. The cold in my mark turned molten, searing outward through every nerve, and my body—my body wasn't mine anymore. It was splitting. Reforming. My wolf surged forward with a violence I had never felt, and I couldn't stop it, couldn't hold it back—

I shifted.

For the first time in my life, I shifted.

The sound was like splitting stone. My body convulsed once, then expanded—massive, silver, twice the size of any Delta in the hall. My fur gleamed like liquid moonlight. The aura that radiated from me was so overwhelming that the nearest warriors stumbled backward, their wolves cowering inside their chests.

On the stage, Maximus's knees buckled. His wolf dropped its head involuntarily, whining, submitting to something it didn't understand. Every Beta in the hall staggered. The mind-link went silent—not because anyone commanded it, but because no one could speak.

I held the shift for one long, terrible moment. My luminous eyes found Maximus on the stage. He stared at me, his face white, his mouth open.

I turned my back on him.

The crowd parted. No one moved to stop me. No one dared. I walked through the hall in my silver wolf form, my paws silent on the stone floor, and crossed the threshold into the night. I took nothing. No possessions. No explanation. No backward glance.

Behind me, the Ironveil Pack stood frozen in the silence I left behind.

I crossed the border into Blackthorn territory alone, my body still trembling from the violent first shift. The cold ghost of my severed mark stung at my neck. I shifted back into human form at the tree line, my ceremonial dress torn and muddy, my breath coming in ragged gasps.

Ryland Brooks was already there.

He stood alone in the dark, quiet and still, as though he had been waiting. His wolf stirred—I felt it, even from ten feet away—a deep, unhurried recognition that made my own wolf go silent inside my chest.

"You're across the line," he said simply. "You're safe."

I met his eyes. I didn't ask how he knew. I didn't thank him. Instead, I spoke first, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands.

"I have detailed knowledge of Ironveil's patrol rotations, defensive weak points, and supply vulnerabilities," I said. "And the private loyalty of a significant portion of their warriors. They're already calling me their true Luna through covert mind-links."

I wasn't requesting charity. I was negotiating sanctuary as an equal.

Ryland's expression didn't change. He simply nodded once and gestured for me to walk ahead of him into Blackthorn territory.

I did.

The Blackthorn pack house was warm. Quiet. Ryland installed me in private quarters on the second floor and left without ceremony. I expected to be alone. I expected to have to ask for food, for arrangements, for the basic logistics of survival.

But when I descended to the kitchen an hour later, the staff already knew.

No wolfsbane-adjacent herbs. No juniper root. Every dish prepared with documented awareness of my sensitivities. The healer—a woman named Sera—handed me a plate and said simply, "We were briefed."

I stared at the meal. Precise. Safe. Meticulously considered.

In ten years in Ironveil, Maximus had allowed wolfsbane-laced herbs into the pack house kitchen on multiple occasions. I had nearly gone into toxic shock twice. He had never once memorized what could harm me.

I sat down. I ate.

Across the room, Ryland watched me in silence. He didn't ask if I was all right. He didn't offer empty comfort. He simply waited, his presence steady and unhurried, until I was ready to speak.

I wasn't ready yet.

But for the first time in ten years, I didn't feel the need to be.
