Chapter 4

Serenity walked into the breakfast hall the next morning like she'd risen from the dead.

She wasn't injured. Not a scratch on her. Her hair was clean, her clothes fresh—someone had dressed her in one of the silk blouses from the Luna's wardrobe. She trembled as she moved, though. A delicate shiver that made her look fragile. Breakable.

Kaiser was at her side. His hand hovered near her elbow, not quite touching but close enough that everyone could see the protective gesture. He guided her to the head table. To the Luna's chair.

I was on my knees ten feet away, scrubbing the stone floor with a brush and a bucket of cold water.

The Omegas had woken me before dawn and handed me the cleaning supplies without a word. This was my assignment now. Latrine maintenance and food preparation, Winifred had said. But apparently floor-scrubbing fell under that umbrella too.

I kept my head down and worked. The brush made a rhythmic scraping sound against the stone. My knees ached. My hands were already raw.

Serenity sat down. I heard the chair scrape. Then I heard her voice—soft, grateful, still carrying that tremor.

"Thank you," she was saying to Kaiser. "I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't—"

"You're safe now," Kaiser said. His voice was warm. Protective. The kind of warmth I used to hear directed at me, back when I still believed soon meant something.

I dipped my brush back into the bucket and kept scrubbing.

Then I felt it. The weight of her gaze.

I looked up. Serenity was watching me. Not trembling now. Her amber eyes were flat. Satisfied. The performance had dropped for just a fraction of a second, and underneath it was something cold and precise.

I held her gaze. Didn't blink. Didn't look away.

She was the one who broke first. Her eyes flicked back to Kaiser, and the trembling resumed like someone had flipped a switch.

I went back to scrubbing. But my wolf was awake beneath my ribs, and she was paying attention.

*She knows,* my wolf said quietly. *She knows exactly what she did.*

I didn't answer. I just cataloged. The duration of the trembling—intermittent, intensifying whenever Kaiser glanced her way. The absence of any genuine stress scent beneath the honeyed vanilla. Real fear had a smell. Sharp and sour. There was none of it on her.

Serenity wasn't afraid. She had won this round, and she knew it.

I finished the floor. Carried the bucket back to the service hall. And when I was alone, I pulled out my notebook and wrote it all down.

---

Winifred summoned me that afternoon.

A young Omega found me in the laundry yard and said, "Luna Winifred wants to see you. Her sitting room. Now."

I followed her through the pack house. We passed wolves I'd healed, wolves I'd served meals to, wolves who'd nodded at me in the hallways for three years. None of them met my eyes now.

Winifred's sitting room was on the second floor, overlooking the eastern gardens. The furniture was elegant—carved wood, velvet cushions, everything arranged to communicate status. She sat in the high-backed chair near the window. The chair across from her was lower. Deliberately.

"Sit," she said.

I sat.

Winifred studied me for a long moment. Her expression was composed. Almost kind. It was worse than if she'd been openly hostile.

"I'm going to offer you a mercy, Novalee," she said finally. "One you don't deserve, but one I'm willing to extend for the sake of pack stability."

I waited.

"You will formally withdraw your claim as Kaiser's fated mate," she continued. "Sign a bond-waiver declaring the mate recognition a misidentification. Leave Shadowmere quietly. In return, I will not pursue further disciplinary action."

She slid a document across the small table between us. It was already prepared. Pre-signed by a Council witness. All it needed was my name.

I looked at the paper. Then at Winifred. She was watching me with the calm certainty of someone who had never been successfully challenged.

I thought about three years of soon. About Kaiser's scent layered with Serenity's. About my torn clothing planted in the eastern forest. About the wolfsbane brand Winifred had once threatened in passing—a comment I'd dismissed as rhetoric until this moment.

I thought about my wolf, awake and prowling beneath my ribs, and the way she'd said *there is something in us they cannot brand away.*

"No," I said quietly.

Winifred's expression didn't change. "I'm sorry?"

"I won't be signing anything, Luna Winifred."

The silence stretched. Winifred's fingers tightened slightly on the arm of her chair—the only visible reaction.

"You're making a mistake," she said. Her voice was still calm. Still composed. But there was something underneath it now. Something sharp.

I stood. "May I be excused?"

Winifred stared at me. I stared back. And for the first time in three years, I didn't lower my gaze first.

"Get out," she said.

I left. Closed the door behind me. And walked back down the hallway with my wolf humming beneath my skin.

---

That night, my wolf spoke.

Not the brief murmurs I'd grown used to. Not the whines or warnings. This was different. She prowled the edges of my consciousness with an energy that felt distinctly un-suppressed—like something that had been caged for a long time and was finally testing the bars.

*There is something in us they cannot brand away,* she said. Her voice was clear. Strong. *I have been waiting a long time.*

I lay in my small room beside the kitchen, staring at the ceiling. "Waiting for what?"

*For you to stop asking him to choose you,* she said. *For you to choose yourself.*

I didn't have an answer for that. I just pressed my hand against my sternum and felt her there—awake, alert, coiled like a spring.

I fell asleep with my private record folded under my pillow and my wolf pacing in the dark behind my eyes.

---

Winifred escalated the next day.

I went to the communal kitchen for breakfast and found the Omegas turning me away. "Luna's orders," one of them said, not unkindly. "You're not to be served from the pack provisions."

I nodded. Didn't argue. Went to the forest instead and foraged—wild herbs, late berries, a rabbit I managed to trap. My wolf helped. She was better at hunting than I'd realized.

That afternoon, I went to the infirmary. A warrior had been injured during morning drills—dislocated shoulder, nothing serious but painful. I'd treated a dozen like it.

The infirmary door was locked.

Beta Dorian Vale was waiting outside. He held a folded piece of paper and wouldn't meet my eyes.

"Luna Winifred's orders," he said quietly. "Your access is revoked. Conflict of interest."

He handed me the paper. I unfolded it. Official pack letterhead. Winifred's signature. The words *effective immediately* underlined twice.

I looked at Dorian. He was staring at the ground.

"The warriors asked for me specifically," I said.

He said nothing.

I folded the paper. Put it in my pocket. "Thank you for delivering this, Beta."

I walked away before he could respond.

That night, I added the lockout notice to my private record. I ate the rabbit I'd trapped and treated my own hunger the way I would any other wound—methodically, without drama.

My wolf was quiet. But I could feel her. Watching. Waiting.

And I realized something.

I wasn't broken yet. They thought I was. Winifred thought stripping away my duties and my meals and my access would make me sign that bond-waiver and disappear.

But I was still here. Still standing. Still keeping my record.

And my wolf—my strange, newly awake wolf—was getting stronger every day.
