Chapter 5

Kaiser found me in the eastern gardens that evening.

I was sitting on the stone bench near the herb beds, cataloging the plants I'd need to forage now that the infirmary was locked to me. Chamomile for inflammation. Yarrow for clotting. Comfrey root if I could find any before the first frost.

I heard his footsteps before I smelled him. Deliberate. Measured. The walk of a man who'd decided something and was building the courage to say it.

I didn't look up. Just kept my hands busy with the dried lavender I was bundling.

"Novalee."

His voice was quiet. Almost gentle. The tone he used to use before everything became complicated.

I set down the lavender. Looked at him.

He stood a few feet away, hands loose at his sides. His expression was careful—like he was approaching something fragile that might shatter if he moved wrong. In the fading light, I could see the shadows under his eyes. He looked tired.

"Can we talk?" he asked.

I waited.

He moved closer. Sat on the bench beside me but didn't touch. The space between us felt deliberate. Measured.

"My mother's restrictions," he started. "They're temporary. You have to understand—the situation with Serenity is complicated right now. The pack is unsettled. I need you to be patient a little longer."

I looked at my hands. At the lavender stems staining my fingers purple.

"Patient," I repeated.

He shifted. "I know it's been hard. I know you've been—" He stopped. Started again. "This isn't what I wanted. But once things stabilize—"

"Once things stabilize," I said quietly, "then what?"

He reached toward me. His hand moved toward my neck—toward the unmarked place where a mate bond should have been completed three years ago.

I stepped back before he could touch it.

His hand froze in the air between us. Something flickered across his face. Surprise. Maybe hurt.

I met his eyes. "How much longer?"

The question hung in the garden air. A bird called from somewhere in the trees. The wind moved through the herb beds.

Kaiser said nothing.

I had asked him this once before, three years ago, when he first told me to wait. I had believed his answer then. I had believed *soon* meant something.

I wasn't asking because I believed anymore. I was asking because I needed to hear him say it. Needed to watch him search for words he didn't have.

"I don't know," he said finally. "But I'm asking you to trust me."

Trust. The word landed wrong. Like asking someone to trust you while they were drowning and you stood on the shore, dry and safe, explaining why you couldn't throw the rope yet.

I picked up my bundled lavender. "I should go. The Omegas will be starting dinner prep."

"Novalee—"

I walked away from him. Across the garden path. Past the roses Serenity had been cutting yesterday. Past the Luna's viewing terrace where Winifred took her morning tea.

I didn't run. I just walked. Steady and deliberate.

Behind my eyes, my wolf stirred.

*Good,* she said.

---

Serenity found me the next afternoon in the pack house corridor.

I was carrying a basket of linens to the laundry yard—one of my new assignments. The hallway was empty. Most of the pack was out on the western border for patrol rotation.

She appeared from the sitting room, holding a cup of tea. Her expression was tentative. Hopeful. The performance was flawless.

"Novalee," she said softly. "I was hoping I'd find you."

I stopped. Set the basket down.

She moved closer. The honeyed vanilla scent wrapped around her like a cloud. "I thought perhaps we could talk. Just the two of us. I know things have been—difficult. But I don't want there to be this tension between us."

She held out the tea. An offering. A peace gesture.

I looked at the cup. Then at her.

"No thank you," I said quietly.

I picked up my basket and moved to pass her.

Her hand shot out. Grabbed my arm. Hard.

I stopped.

The trembling performance dropped. Her amber eyes went flat and cold. She leaned in close—close enough that I could see the calculation behind the fragile mask.

"You should have taken the deal my mother offered you," she hissed.

The word hung in the air between us.

*Mother.*

Serenity's eyes widened. Just a fraction. She'd said it without meaning to—let it slip in a moment of naked honesty.

She released my arm immediately. Stepped back. The trembling resumed like someone had flipped a switch. Her eyes went soft and wounded again.

"I'm sorry," she said, voice breaking perfectly. "I didn't mean—I'm just so stressed with everything—"

She turned and retreated down the hallway. Disappeared into the sitting room. Left me standing there with my basket and the word still ringing in my ears.

*Mother.*

I stood very still. Let the information settle. Let the pieces click into place.

Winifred wasn't protecting a rescued orphan. She was protecting her daughter.

I carried my basket to the laundry yard. Hung the linens with steady hands. And when I was alone in my room that night, I opened my private record and wrote the word at the top of a new page.

MOTHER.

Beneath it, I added: *The frame is showing its seams.*

---

Serenity vanished two days later.

I was scrubbing the breakfast hall floor when the alarm went up. Not howls this time—a bell. Three sharp rings. Emergency assembly.

I dropped my brush and ran to the courtyard with everyone else.

Winifred stood at the center. She wasn't trembling. Wasn't performing distress. She looked cold and certain.

"Serenity Watson has been taken from the pack house," she announced. Her voice carried across the assembled wolves. "Evidence of forced entry was found in her quarters. An overturned chair. Signs of struggle."

My wolf growled low in my chest. *Forced entry. In the pack house. With guards at every door.*

I scanned the crowd. Kaiser stood beside his mother, his face tight. Dorian Vale was behind them, holding something I couldn't quite see.

Winifred continued. "This is the second attack on Serenity Watson. The pattern is clear. The perpetrator is among us."

She turned. Looked directly at me.

"Novalee Duncan."

The crowd shifted. Wolves turned to stare. I felt a hundred pairs of eyes land on me at once.

"You were seen near Serenity's quarters this morning," Winifred said. "You have motive. You have demonstrated violence. And you have refused to accept responsibility."

I opened my mouth to speak—to explain that I'd been in the breakfast hall all morning, that there were witnesses—

"This time," Winifred said, "there will be consequences."

Dorian stepped forward. He was holding a wooden case. Carved. Locked.

My wolf recognized it before I did. The scent that leaked from the seams.

Wolfsbane.

Winifred opened the case. Inside, nestled in velvet, was a branding iron. The Shadowmere crest on one end. The other end was stained dark.

"For crimes against a pack member," Winifred said, "the punishment is branding."

Several wolves in the crowd shouted agreement. I heard Maren's voice somewhere in the back—"She attacked twice!"—and realized they believed it. They actually believed it.

Kaiser stood silent beside his mother. His jaw was tight. His hands were clenched. But he didn't speak.

*Say something,* I thought desperately. *You know me. You know I wouldn't—*

Nothing.

Winifred turned to Dorian. "Restrain her."

Dorian gestured to two Omegas standing nearby. They moved toward me—not cruel, just obedient. Following orders.

My wolf surged beneath my skin. *Fight,* she snarled. *Fight them—*

But I didn't. I stood very still as they took my arms. As they forced me to my knees on the cold courtyard stone.

Winifred lifted the brand from its case. In the afternoon light, I could see the wolfsbane oil glistening on the metal.
